Description: Learning to draw is more than just what happens on the paper. You will need to understand the vocabulary of drawing- only then will you be able to apply the concepts and improve your drawing. This video is about the 3 different kinds of edges you find in drawing and where to use them.

The discussion regarding edges in the context of a form mode of representation is intriguing. In the realm of painting, we can also explore edges based on their visual quality, such as hard, soft, and lost edges. While these qualities often arise from the form mode, they can also manifest in other modes of representation, such as shape-value-color or line, where the form is less pronounced, as in silhouettes or flat lighting situations.

Once again, a debt of gratitude. I’m totally self taught and must rely on scavenging for information as specific and clearly stated as this video is. Thank you so much. I’ve been pondering this question of edges (and consequently confounded drawing them) for over a year now. I’m aware that there’s much more subtle complexity to this but you can’t imagine how this video cleared my foggy brain on this topic. Many thanks.

I was about to say the same. I always found shading the hardest thing to learn but understanding different edge types has given me exactly what I wasn't getting! It's funny how sometimes we just need it explained in a different way.

Your edge work, particularly when the form that's lit is contrasting with the dark background, has this delicate quality (don't know how else to describe it) that is really pleasing. Recently learned about chiaroscuro, hoping I could learn something to then be able to recreate the same effect.

@@stephenbaumanartwork each and every part would be precious and teach something that I might not know. I do not know any other creator that can teach in the way you do. The inherent problem for me with digital art is not being able to sketch an eye like you would traditionally from blending graphite to controlling pencils.
A form of realism in digital, that isnt hyperrealistic. Basically, how to be like Sargent if he was given a wacom and photoshop.
