      @@mattiass.6571 that's how things work tho, for legit everyone. the older you are, the less you understand the newest generation because you aren't active in it.
      or just, change in general, is what throws people off.
      like how people complain about using tech over paper, and before that they complained about paper over writing slates, and before *that* they probably complained about using writing slates over etching into clay, and it goes on and on.
      forgive my tangent, but im sure you understand what I mean.
      but hey! at least, to my knowledge, there are no notable derogatory slurs in gen z slang (exempting maybe, cheugy? didn't know that was a thing, apparently it slams millennials, and I would include "Karen" but that originated from the black community in response to middle-class white people (usually women) being terribly racist so, not sure that counts...), so that's a plus! or maybe those things take time, or people are still using the old and most known ones.

    • @mattiass.6571
      @mattiass.6571 Год назад +2

      @@Cheshieruu yeah, I believe the tendency for older generations complaining about younger ones is sometimes called juvenoia. we don't like it when "kids these days" have different childhoods from our own, because we know that our childhoods worked well enough for us to become functioning adults, and we want that for younger generations too. though in today's rapidly changing world, it's tough to say how much of that juvenoia is justified, what with social media and new technology that isn't only changing youth culture but also kids' minds.
      I also wouldn't rule out the formation of any widely used derogatory words heh, there's quite a bit of vitriol in certain online spaces lol

      As a 23 year old, I can say I agree. I was thirteen in 2013 when "selfie" was a thing, and I just hated the sound of it.
      I've observed that it's not so much a generational thing, it's just a trend chasing thing that people latch onto.
      People like to be in the "in crowd" of looking cool, so people just agree on cool made up words that mean the same thing as an older, formal sounding word.

    • @JaceAce22
      @JaceAce22 Год назад +10

      Dan had to have been a part of that, when he was a kid, knowing all the terms for weed, or gnarly, or rad.

    • @Vesperad0
      @Vesperad0 Год назад +1

      @@JaceAce22maybe so, but I don't think it's entirely an "in crowd" thing, after all it's "trendy words/slang" for a reason. I may be speaking only for myself and my sister, but even as terminally online nerds we aren't interested in being ""popular"" or cool with the other kids, we both just watch gay ass black ass tiktoks
      Also, a lot of gen z slang actually comes from before any of us existed, like aave/ebonics and queer culture. It's moreso that people heard younger gens of these identities using words they hadn't heard of, decided they liked it, and tried to reframe it as a new gen z thing

I do think all these slang terms are interesting from a language development standpoint, though. For example, 'serving c*nt' being a popular term within the drag community to compliment someone's convincing portrayal of feminitity and womanhood. It was then being redefined by RuPaul as an acronym for 'Charisma, Uniqueness, Nerve and Talent', which was popularised by fans of Drag Race and caught on with a much wider audience on the internet, even leaving the gay and drag communities. I get the humor and experiences of Millennials so much more. But that's probably because I have an older brother and Gen Z wasn't a thing when I was growing up. We were just kids.
