James -- love your calm and mellow approach.
I think the birds planted all of my black raspberries. I have enjoyed harvesting what the birds leave for me. : )
I just got some black raspberries this year as nature's gift to me, not that I planted any. Despite not being in the best location I decided to keep them and see what they do. My only fear is controlling them but I'm pretty active in my (very large) lawn and I think I can keep them penned to one or two areas. Despite this being their first year, the vines are actually bearing a little bit of fruit. Most of it is underdeveloped and shriveling before maturity. But there are a handful of berry clusters that are looking good.
These grow wild in my yard with birds planting them. I found they like partial shade. If planted in the sun, I found the berries are smaller and the leaves are also smaller and tired looking. I don't need to add any nutrients. I'm mid-Atlantic, zone 7A with clay soil with mica and lots of worms. These plants aren't vines, but canes. The first year's growth doesn't produce fruit the first year, but the following year those same canes produce fruit. After that, you cut down those same canes in the 3rd year because they're done. Good luck!
I live in northern Washington state. I have found a bunch of Black Caps up here in the forest next to a creek. Thanks for your videos.
I’m from the same area! I just found some behind my new raised beds. I thought there where there thimble(?) berries. I want to transfer plant some of them that are gonna get demolished but am nervous I guess.
I started my own fruit forest because of your channel. Thank you
Hey, what do you have so far? I found a heaping ton of black raspberries in my back yard this year along with 2 mulberry trees (which pushed my flowering snowball bush out of their way lol, but are still no match for honeysuckle if left to grow) and 2 mulberry saplings. Elderberries galore and some other berry I think is edible but haven't identified yet. Small, pale purple white and blue berries that sort of grow on a vine.
I spotted them growing on my elm tree last year. It fell over in the late fall, now those berries have completely taken over the fallen remains of it! Not to mention a year or two before it fell my mom stopped by and we just happened to walk in the back looking for morel mushrooms. Found one next to the tree, and as I looked around I spotted them growing all over that area! Think it was 11 or 13 that I found. Haven't seen any there since, but it sure was a cool moment.
I'm hoping to work the acre and a smidge here into useable garden space this year. Maybe start a few summer and fall crops, and start planting big time next year. Really want to do persimmons and goji berries if the climate's right here in MO.
@@terrapinflyer273 I have 30 fruit trees, berry plants (just about every kind), table and muscadine grapes.
Don't count your chickens before they hatch.
@@ericschmuecker348 I started raising chickens too.
I love looking at old videos after a channel took off ;) Now there's so much enthusiasm! Love it. Wife brought home some raspberries, blueberries and grapes that I have to figure out how to make work 🤣👍
Props for the Nightmare at the beginning. Thanks for you kindness
Sitting at my kitchen table in Northern Illinois right now eating a plateful of black raspberries from my yard. I never do anything to prune or care for them, but every year I get a healthy bumper crop to pick right off the vine.
Maybe I will begin taking extra care to expand even further. Thank you. 🍃
Watching your old videos ur so tense haha but ur new videos are so natural and casual awesome bro
Thank you for sharing your knowledge ❤️😊
Short and to the point. Thank you!
we have a secret large supply and they are ready now! Life is good
Blackcaps rule! I started out picking wild blackcaps here in Wisconsin, now I grow a couple of varieties, New Logan and Cumberland. I love to eat them fresh, and add some in my cherry wine!
Thanks for the video, James.
Here in southwest Brazil, the plant act like doesn't know what season is. Start frutify with 6 month grown, after that is literally a fruit factory. The clusters have no space between the fruits. Thanks for tips. Kind regards.
How about an episode on how to root them so that we can have more plants
Wild black raspberries...by me.
50 years ago in central illinois you could find berries and also wild asparagus growing on roadsides, railroad right of ways, and drainage ditches. Much effort went into eliminating these natural and free food sources. The University of Illinois has published that it is impossible to cultivate wild black raspberries?
We do. We have patches that are 50 yrs old. As an experiment we crushed a few gallons of berries like we always do for jelly but I kept the seeds and dumped them by the back fence. Guess what? They grew and now birds are spreading the seeds for me.
So please sacrifice a few berries and put them at the base of a fence as if a bird sat on the fence then pooped seeds when it flew off. THAT is exactly how it works.
Now do it!
Thanks for the pointers. I’m in Long Island. I’m going to order them from the nursery for planting. I did not see Tucker in this video
Hey I am in Medford, you can have some of my berry plants, I am moving soon, I have wild black raspberries, heritage raspberries, triple crown blackberries, wineberries and thimbleberries.
Hi, thank you for your tips, what do the black raspberries taste like?
Köszönjük!
I had some this morning. They grow wild where I live
Beautiful garden
Thanks for this one, James. I'm in Central Tx so I thought raspberries were out of the question. Gonna have to take a deeper look into these!
+Rusted Oak Homestead cool! Thanks for watching
Im in North Texas. I own and run PermacultureDenton. I wish my food forest looked like this one. Im going on 7 years and still have so much to learn.
I've been growing Jewel Black Raspberries for 6 years now. This year I have noticed a few primocane have produced fruit. This is the first time it ever happened and was wondering if you had any thoughts on the matter.
My black raspberries’ berries are so tiny this year. What gives? Can you please do a video on that?
What a gorgeous garden!
I have a black raspberry that I planted about 3 years ago but it doesn't send up lots of young canes like I see in the videos here. Thanks for the pruning tips; I know exactly what to do now!
James is the best
I am in Coastal New England and have a ton of red raspberries/ wineberries. They seem to have dominated the area leaving me only a few black raspberries. Any ideas how to increase black raspberries?!
I want to eat one of those black raspberries sooo bad. Never had one before. Keep up the good work
I have a raspberry bush in my garden bordering a graveyard. The raspberries are very tasty so it me lol when you said that raspberries grow in a soil with high organic or humus matter 😅😂😂😂
great video. my new property in central pa has a ton of wild blackberries! Where in NJ are you? I had a little food forest in Jersey City, NJ
Interesting. I I'm noticing these near where I live, but a lot of them, even the very plump juicy looking ones, seem to have a whitish fuzz in the center and even growing on the outside in between the segments. Is that some kind of mold?
Awesome video 😊 we love our black raspberries over here at the Forging Freedom Channel. One problem I have had year over year is no matter how much I water them they turn out quite small. I think they should be bigger. They face west though and so get a lot of heat in our Utah sun. Any recommendations?
If the plants are to dense you can thin them out which could help, then add a good thick mulch down to help retain the moisture when you water. Also, if you haven't kept up on pruning your canes your plants may be trying to just produce more then they can because they are stressed and are trying to produce as much seed as possible. I hope this helps, thanks for watching :)
james prigioni thanks for the quick response. Yep, doing all those things, so glad to know I'm on the right track 👍😊 I think I'll try rigging up some shade for the afternoon West sun and see if that makes a difference next Summer. Just subbed you 😊 check us out if you get time. We do a live podcast on YT Friday and Monday evenings
? I'm trying to figure out if these will multiply in the way that red raspberries do. We purchased a single plant and I'd like to train it to grow more over time.
Thank you for being an inspiration (you too Tuck!
I love this dog....lol...always munching on fruits and veg...just love it.
reminds me of my husky. :) He LOVES lettuce. He will beg for it over steak lmao. he's not right. ;) My cavalier however is a meatosaurus.
I have black raspberries that fruit on first and second year canes. It is a newer variety called "niwot".
I just ordered some of those myself.
Wow that is some production value. I've never seen John Koehler fly.
+Richard Murtha thanks Richard I'm stepping my game up
I haven't had black raspberries in years... Thank you for sharing! Beat, Sasha
Garden is Looking Awesome..
+Extreme Garden Fun ! S.E.L thanks Mike
Wonderful video, once again James.
Is the introduction music a full song. And if so what is the name of that song? I quickly got caught up in that short tune. Now back to actually watching this black raspberries vid.
Just found it - it's called finally moving by Pretty Lights. It's awesome!
Another great video,thanks ! !
+Pacific Permaculture thank you!
I got a big bush of them in my backyard and im from ny i get them between june and july:)
Mine is flowering, i planted last summer 😂😂😂😂
All the Black raspberries I’ve seen are only hardy to zone 8! (I’m 9) I just purchased nova it’s the only one I could find for my zone- a red variety.
Like the look of these, thank you!
Thank you for watching!
Love your videos. Thanks for this one.
+Kirsten Whitworth thanks for watching! 😁
Does it help to have a natural compost in the soil where the black raspberry plants will eventually go? I'm thinking of starting the seeds in little individual soil pods or in pots and then transplanting them to a garden space once they've grown a bit.
Nice
Do they taste like red raspberries? Do they shoot new canes?
Nice.
Great video James!
Very well done video. Best wishes Bob.
+BobMels Gardens thanks Bon
I found out this year that they are not as hardy as red raspberries. We had a bad winter with lots of rain and it died back to the ground. It's started growing again albeit quite slowly 😟
I came here just to find out if black raspberries are a real thing from Jenna Marbles video..
They definitely are👉 my backyard is covered ❤
love raspberries, but they are a no go for me. I gotta stick to tropical fruit. just found your channel, glad I did, I love seeing food forests, it's what I aspire to have.
Yea I like tropicals but they are more expensive to buy and a little tougher to grow because of the dieback in winter
~ ~ Can some 1 PLEASE PLZ tell me the Name of that Song in the Beginning ?? i heard it before as an instrumental - is it five finger discount ?
You have heaven bro ♥️
I have lots of black raspberries this year but they are tiny. What causes this or what can I do to get larger size?
you might want to thin them out. If you have alot of canes, you can cut out 2/3 of them and top off the remaining canes at eye height. The canes will eventually fatten up and the fruit gets bigger. At least this helped me out!
Do you grow any pineapple guavas?
Oh yeah I leaned everything lol lol nuff said
Since this video leaves me with many questions to be answered it is far from being "everything" I need to know about blck raspberries,
I have laterals 3' long. Do u ever trim them?
That was a great video! Right to the point- exactly what I needed to know! Thanks!
Great! Thanks, there will be more coming in the future!
I was wondering. How can you know the difference between A black raspberry and a black berry?
Raspberries the core stays on the stem of the plant when you pick it that’s why raspberries are hollow but when you pick blackberries the core comes with the blackberry and so it’s not hollow.
Aka black caps. What we call them.
How much sun do they need?
Why are they not sold in stores but red ones are everywhere?
wasn't quite everything I needed to know. I want to transplant some at my sister's and niece's...
Why did it crunch?
This a seed inside every little nodule.
@danabaker596 Yes, but they don't "crunch" audibly. Only to the eaters ears.
I better test this out. Berries should be ripe in a week or two.
New format is blowing it up, Not James!
What do you mean? Can you further explain for me my friend :)
james prigioni Gladly. your new video format is awesome. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Brt tasting berries on the PLANET. BAR NONE.
