I am from Oregon, but I drove to St. Helens and saw first hand the aftermath of Mt. St. Helen right after it blew. Before it blew, after multiple warnings, people were STILL fishing and hiking around a TICKING TIME BOMB. As a result several paid an ultimate price, just like here. I pray for the people who lost loved ones and the burn victims. I HOPE the Aussie government puts this and all active volcanoes OFF LIMITS PERIOD.

People should be free to risk their lives if they wish. They need to be properly informed though before doing so. If those around Mount St Helens new that the eruption could be the equivalent of hundreds of atomic bombs, would they have stuck around? Excluding Mr Truman, probably not.

New Zealand Emergency Services failed to respond in a timely manner over concerns of the safety of 1st Responders. Having been a 1st Responder for several years in the past, we often have to make the tough decision, but it was always get in there and save as many as possible at all costs. Period. If New Zealand government was really concerned they would have and in place equipment to monitor this active, Level II Volcano and this tragedy may have been avoided. They appear to have stood off at a relatively safe distance and then raced back to evacuate those who had managed to make it to the jetty, many of them seriously injured. From footage, the other boat anchored near the jetty and at least one helicopter was totally destroyed. Four other helicopters raced out from the mainland and rescued other survivors further inland from the jetty.
