I am from Oregon, but I drove to St. Helens and saw first hand the aftermath of Mt. St. Helen right after it blew. Before it blew, after multiple warnings, people were STILL fishing and hiking around a TICKING TIME BOMB. As a result several paid an ultimate price, just like here. I pray for the people who lost loved ones and the burn victims. I HOPE the Aussie government puts this and all active volcanoes OFF LIMITS PERIOD.
People should be free to risk their lives if they wish. They need to be properly informed though before doing so. If those around Mount St Helens new that the eruption could be the equivalent of hundreds of atomic bombs, would they have stuck around? Excluding Mr Truman, probably not.
@@earlem9771 the tour company KNEW that the volcano was at a Level 2 at the time (Level 3 means eruption) but never translated that information to tourists. Way different than Mt Saint Helene where they were warned. I hope they’re held fully accountable.
The sad thing is that those people on the island would have suffered an unimaginable brutal death, they did not die instantly and a majority of people on that island suffered more than 80% of burns on there body

New Zealand Emergency Services failed to respond in a timely manner over concerns of the safety of 1st Responders. Having been a 1st Responder for several years in the past, we often have to make the tough decision, but it was always get in there and save as many as possible at all costs. Period. If New Zealand government was really concerned they would have and in place equipment to monitor this active, Level II Volcano and this tragedy may have been avoided. So sorry for the loss of loved ones, and the injured with life long effects.

I agree but everyone is different. Maybe those poor souls wouldn’t have went if they truly known the risk. Some people have said they where only told when they arrived. I never rely on holiday tours for information I do my own research beforehand due my disability as not all tours are suitable or safe. Travel Insurance may not cover you for this type of your.

It is NOT a tragedy that White Island erupted. The tragedy is that tour companies continued to operate, all in the name of another dollar, when volcanologists had decided to retreat from the island due to highly increased risk of eruption.
It's called editing. They couldn't use the entire footage otherwise this video would have been too long. They needed to edit it down to shots they wanted in the video. If you want to see the whole footage you'll need to search for it on youtube.
I hope they don't get traumatized from it though. We often tend to just focus on the physical aspects, and forget about the mental impact these kind of thing has on people!

I would like to hear their story. I well up with grief every time I think about it. The tragic victims near the crater vent had no hope of escape. Maybe the people not found yet made a great effort to run away and got lost in the confusion of the smoke and thus were not found with the other bodies?

There was a eruption the night before, no one should have went that day. Use common sense. That was a accident waiting to happen. Volcanologists released the level activity but that info was not released to the tourists. If they had known there was activity the night before im sure they would have not gone. Any of them
The guys in the helicopters are being charged for going there when the first responders would not. I'm sure they were embarrassed to answer such difficult questions like how does it feel to be a chicken $h*t? They call evil good & good evil.
They knew that there was another boat load from the same tour company on the island getting hammered by the eruption. They appear to have stood off at a relatively safe distance and then raced back to evacuate those who had managed to make it to the jetty, many of them seriously injured. From footage, the other boat anchored near the jetty and at least one helicopter was totally destroyed. Four other helicopters raced out from the mainland and rescued other survivors further inland from the jetty.
I feel bad for all the victims but their families cannot fully blame the tour company or the nz government as they chose to go onto an active volcano, which I think is highly dangerous and ridiculous! There shouldn't be a tour offering this and you shouldn't put yourself or your loved ones at risk by doing something so stupid!
