  • Rishi Sunak and Sir Keir Starmer have condemned the Reform UK leader Nigel Farage - after he claimed that NATO and the West had provoked the invasion of Ukraine.
    (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News...)
Mr Starmer said the remarks were "disgraceful" and Russia bore sole responsibility for the war - while Mr Sunak said it "played into Putin's hands".

Why do smaller nations bordering on Russia want to sign the Treaty?
Is it because Estonia wants to invade Russia? Are the Latvians going to do a stealth attack on St. Petersburg?
This nonsense about provoking Russia by signing a defence treaty needs to be pushed back on.
Russia frequently invades their sovereign neighbour nations both militarily like Chechnya, Georgia Afghanistan etc as well as by nefarious covert means like in Moldova who now has a Russian enclave along the western banks of the Dniester River.
Russia is the global nuclear superpower and the idea that they are somehow under threat of invasion by democratic neighbors is ludicrous! Anyone who invades Russian territory will get nuked.
NATO is merely a restraining order against an abusive and insanely jealous ex boyfriend. It only threatens the ability for Russia or anyone else to attack their neighbors. These neighbors are rightfully terrified of Russia with their track record of aggression and the kremlins non stop rhetoric of revanchism and “borderlessness”.
Be wary of populist charlatans like Farage who take every opportunity to victim blame Ukraine and simp for authoritarians like Putin.

I'm unsure if you've been misled or intentionally lying; I'm hopeful for the latter.
"The US made assurances to Gorbachev, it's a matter of well recorded history": No such agreement regarding the halt of NATO eastern expansion was ever signed, and the commonly 1990 cited NATO Secretary General Wörner address for this supposed assurances contains no details regarding NATO expansion and purely relates to the placement of NATO troops in Germany.
Furthermore, Gorbachev himself was interviewed about the 1990 talks regarding assurances around NATO expansion. He was quoted as saying, "The topic of “NATO expansion” was not discussed at all, and it wasn’t brought up in those years. I say this with full responsibility. Not a single Eastern European country raised the issue, not even after the Warsaw Pact ceased to exist in 1991."
Lastly, on a personal note, even If a verbal agreement had been made, Why should Russia or the United States have the power to deny sovereign countries the right to apply to join NATO if that is what they wish? Commonly ignored or perhaps overlooked is the fact such countries were not forced to join NATO after the fall of the Warsaw Pact. Each country in Eastern Europe did so willingly. Countries like Poland have multiple times been invaded by Russia in their history and made the decision to join a defensive alliance to ensure this would not occur again; Ukraine didn't and, as such, has been invaded as a result.
Regardless, I hope this provided some insight and I hope you have a good day.

I don't like Russia's conduct nor do I support their military forays around the world, especially in Ukraine and Syria, but it is a fact that NATO has expanded up to Russia's borders in the last 60 or so years. Farage is not wrong in stating this fact. Is it necessary to expand NATO in this way? Probably. But you can't expect such actions not to have repercussions, hence the invasion of Ukraine which is not a NATO member, yet.
I would also like to add that it's sad but predictable seeing the mainstream media try to twist this statement of fact into another attempted character assassination.

For crystal-clear reasons, Russia's neighbours are the most concerned about a Russian invasion. Who're you to deny them collective security guarantees with a known bully living next door? @@peabase I don't think you're reading my comment objectively. I'm a supporter of NATO and I oppose Russia's government and actions, but the fact remains that NATO has positioned vast amounts of materiel and manpower near Russia's borders - expect a response. Do you remember when the USA had to climb down from installing hundreds of Patriot missile systems in Eastern Europe? From our point of view, it's a defensive measure to intercept airborne projectiles and drones, from theirs, it's a potential delivery system to support a nuclear strike. Try to see both sides of the argument, here.
Back to the main point, Farage has suggested that NATO's expansion to the Russian border has provoked Russia into making a move - invading Ukraine. There is a strong case for that argument. However, Russia's leadership is clearly not peace-loving and corruption and state sanctioned murder of political opponents is commonplace, so as I already said in my original comment, is NATO's expansion necessary? Probably.

I started reading the comments expecting there to be plenty of condemnation of Farage but surprisingly it looks like people in the comments can see through the BS and agree that what he says is true.

The Guradian and "Independent" 's comments were supportive of him, too. I had to double check what I was reading!

The comments will tell you Farage is right, but they can't seem to say why.
It is almost like their programming doesn't allow for it.

It would take too long to text all the proof that the West, mostly USA and their vile Victoria Newman are responsible for this war and pushing Russia into seeking partnership with China etc.

I don’t care if Farage says some silly things, he’s still more honourable then those Tory and Labour clowns.

Terrible timing Nigel! You’ve just done your party a MASSIVE disservice and have lost a lot of votes as a result 👎

I don’t think so. What he said was true…demonstrably true and backed up by plenty of other informed comment. Dig a little deeper into the background and you will see that Putin..Russia..had no other option..

Flak from Stooge Starmer and WEFi Sunak is a ringing endorsement of what Nigel said.

Regardless of whether NATO creep ‘provoked’ the Russian invasion, bottom line for me has always been I’d rather live in any NATO country you care to mention than Putin’s Russia.
