I can't believe the only reason Apple didn't get ruled as a monopoly was by being a giant monopoly entirely
Be good or be good at it.
Don't forget not writing down when they do evil shit! That was also a big part of things, cleaning up the paper trail
@@GH0STST4RSCR34Mworld wide market share is entirely irrelevant to an American court dealing with a monopoly in America.
It's not illegal to have a monopoly. If it was, you could never make anything new. However, what is illegal is anti-competitive practices. There's a whole lot of nuance to this, it's a very interesting rabbit hole if you have time.
@@ThatTimothy Apple and Google are both anti-competitive. Apple just exploited a loophole of "we don't give an illusion of freedom" which is completely ridiculous.
If 2023 had a tech/gaming news wrapped it'd just be: _lawsuits & needless layoffs_ . I hope all these suits change the industry for the better (and people advocate for their jobs back/better working conditions), but it's definitely been a consistent theme now to the point where this entire video is virtually just lawsuits lol.
Layoffs are defs a theme in the TechLinked + GameLinked Xmas Specials
Funny how embracer corp is responsible for 50 percent of all the layoffs in gaming industry
We need urgent anti trust legislation.
@@techlinked so how many times did Coulton get fired this year? Will DBrand hire him?
I don't think the layoffs can be called needless. They're unfortunate, but it's perfectly possible AAA studios are slowly losing to indies.
If Epic believed so strongly in fair competition, they'd stop paying for Epic store exclusives and compete against Steam on merit instead.
Ah but then they'd lose 😂
Making an actually good launcher is harder though
@@castor9907 yes it requiring effort and all
Sad part is, they have enough money to hire some real talent and make a good honest run at steam. Both stores would improve dramatically from such a competition. They honestly could make steam seriously sweat, and maybe even win, but instead they decide to try to undercut and play some kinda shifty game. I think Tim genuinely sees himself as like a steve jobs figure. Some big tech visionary and shrewd business mogul. He's just an idiot.
He’s only out for profit. Epic is an anti-consumerist nightmare that milks people through their children and shady designs.
I’ll pirate every exclusive before I give epic a single cent of my money.
I find it always so amusing how Apple never looses such Monopoly cases while clearly being monopolistic and anti-competitive as we saw in the case of their AirTags.
But Google and Android counterparts always looses.
edit: especially now, when in terms of 3rd party App Stores, we all know who is way worse, and yet Apple wins and Google Looses.
I think what is happening here is that Apple just says that no you can't have 3rd party stores, while google uses a 'carrot and a stick' method, where they say you can have 3rd party app stores but cuts under the table deals that stops that from happening.
Because apple has 10-20% of the market, while google has 80-90%, it could be argued apple is the underdog and google the monopoly :p
@@siddhj2206Exactly. And one of Apple’s arguments IIRC was that it’s actually a duopoly (with Apple having a
Oh gosh, what if that means that the topic is more nuanced and complicated them you want to oversimplify it too?
not really important, but it's "lose" not "loose". nothing is being loosened or being let loose.
I thought part of the reason why Google lost wasn't because they wrote everything down but rather they didn't. There were missing chats with various people that the jury was told they could assume the worst was written in them.
It was both - they wrote everything down and then deleted much, but not all of it. And that's why you always delete all of it
Can we please take a moment to appreciate how good Riley's Aussie accent actually is.... Good on ya mate!
I closed my eyes and convinced I was back in the Outback, foraging for bush tucker and boxing kangaroos… which is amazing as I’ve never actually been to Australia. Just a testament to Riley’s many talents.
Need him to do an entire episode like that
I love how our solution to lonely seniors isn't to make cities more human-scale and less dangerous in general but to distribute robot pets.
"finally we strike back at big grandma" i can't XD 8:43
Riley’s getting Christmas trees and computers confused again 😅
To be fair, they both have RGB. Plus a computer can be used as an space heater.
@I have a friend who burns their tree with gasoline at new years- does that count as a space heater?

The limited edition steam deck smells so strongly of lavender when you first open it there is no chance it was accidental.
Maybe a lavender-scented person put it together?
thats weirdly lovely
@@BlackApricot it absolutely is, caught me off guard in a good way
I’m glad that other people smell their steam deck, I smell it more for the warmth tho, it’s comforting and should never fade
Huh? Mine doesn't smell like lavender.
Strike back against big grandma took me all the way out. Lmao
It's not grandma's fault she's big; it's just her glands.
Trueee that reference was out of nowhere
I love the multi-channel multi-video "big grandma" references. They are so funny!
Hats off to editor. First, fisheye focus at "M2" and second, the burnt fuse.
The recurring Big Grandma ™ is great
"Mark of a good threat is that you never have to follow through" - Riley casually dropping one liners like any best Hollywood movie.
"Strike back against big grandma" sounds like the 911 reason I get called in for.
valve asking me to stop sniffing my deck vent only made me want to sniff my deck vent more. they cant stop me!
To be fair, they didn't, like, issue a PSA or anything-a customer emailed support to ask if it was safe to inhale the fumes, and support said, "No."
A commenter on Kotaku likened it to a teacher reacting to their students eating paste. Like, that's not a behavior they're going to condone, but realistically there's no way to stop it from happening.
"heading back to Cupertino, to lose again" had me cracking up!
Jee, thanks for saying WHY valve said to stop smelling the exhaust of the deck.
I thought the big headlines would have been Google faking their new AI 😂

It’s crazy that the Apple Store is the only option on IOS yet they won their case. Really shows how much Apple spends on lawyers.
Thanks for the likes!! =D
It's not only their lawyers. One major reason they won is that they do not allow the instalation of unauthorised apps, and they can basically decide on a whim what gets authorised and what does not.
The USA does not see the ability to install any software the user wants on computing hardware they own to be a lawful right, which is why they are allowed to have a monopoly on app stores. Google lost because third party stores exist on Android and the executives were sloppy and revealed incriminating evidence.
The reason Apple can win is that current law systems (not just USA) are broken by laws that should not exist, such as current copyright protection legislations, that don't allow you to use your hardware like you own it.
And the true boss behind most of this lobbying is probably the video game industry, not Apple. If Apple couldn't get guaranteed 30% IAPs, it's a blow, but they'll manage. If console makers won't get their 30%, the business becomes unsustainable.
it's their platform they can do whatever they want whatchu mean? if twitch and google can decide what people can or can't say than apple should be allowed to do the same thing. people are losing their god damn minds these days holy f man. imagine making a platform about cats and you get sued for not allowing dog pictures on your platform lmao that's literally what's going on. who do you think made and owns IOS? the public??
Apple just own their operative system and they set their rules
If one don’t like, just don’t use it
No, it shows you have a fundamental misunderstanding of how the law works. Google did openly anticompetitive things within an open system. That’s illegal. Just having a monopoly is not

But WHY did Apple only have a judge but Epic v Google a jury?? That's the REAL question that needs to be answered.
Google quite literally asked for it
It's cheaper to bribe just one person.
Google likely expected that the jury will side with them.
I suspect if the jury went afowl, then people posting about the trial would be censored. Google has censored conversation about less.
What's the difference? I'm not from US

It's shitty how Google loses and Apple doesn't when Apple is way more monopolistic
because apple is not monopolistic, apple is just being exclusive
where google pretend its open
edit: monopoly isnt ilegal, You cant get sue because you make succesfull product that everybody uses, the problem happen when you force competitor out of business
I wouldn't say Google is less monopolistic than apple. Quite the opposite, actually. Google has a true monopoly over things like online video, so they don't even have to try to lock you into their ecosystem like apple has to, because apple has at least *some* competition in their spaces. It's much, much harder to go without using Google products than Apple products.
@@spagootest2185 You do realize, if not for Safari and Firefox, 99% of the world would be on Chrome....? Safari is like 20%..Google is a dangerous monopoly. Apple not so much, there are still competitors. And Apple isn't even in the lead in it's own markets. Windows has more users than Mac and Android has more users than IOS... Think of all the users on google..gmail.. youtube.. etc.
Monopoly should be based on number, it should be done through practical monopoly.

Ah yes, Epic Games the pc game store that makes pc games exclusives to their store 😐
Does Steam, Origin, etc. all not do this as well though?
@@FoxyDrewOrigin’s exclusives I believe were mostly, if not entirely, EA properties where EA didn’t want to pay someone else for distribution. Steam is the only place many games are available, but I’m under the understanding that that’s because it’s easy to get on Steam and it’s the biggest platform, and no one is being kept from releasing elsewhere.
Epic Games, however, is giving third parties cash in return for removing the ability of customers to buy through the platform of their choice and instead be forced through EGS.

I can't understand how they claim the tesla update is a 'recall'. That would be like if every video game that had a patch with major fixes was declared a "recall".
I mean the buggy code in question is technically physically stored in your car.
the worst thing for me is that because Linus HATES Elon all of the people that work for him "HATE" him too... and i love how autopilot is misleading but calling an update a recall is not
The usual determining factor is usually "does it affect safety" . If yes, then it's called a recall no matter what the remedy is...If your PS5 has some faulty software that may set the console on fire...then you bet that update will be called a "recall" even it's a software update to fix.
It just so happens everything relating to a car in motion is a safety hazard. And thus everything is most likely going to be called a recall.
@@skifree0yep, same thing happened with the 1st gen A class, the rollover issues were fixed by the introduction of ESC software, that too was a recall, all a recall means is that the manufacturer reccomends coming back to a liscensed shop to get it fixed, no matter what it may be
@user-bt4xf5gc5t And yet he still bought a tesla didnt he?? Haha it's non sensical and shows that Linus is really jusy jumping on the bandwagon rather than independently thinking and seeing why elon is saying the things he does.
The elderly bot news was so interesting! I wish there was more about it.

While the courts probably ignores the fact of, Tesla should not be able to claim 1st Amendment rights as a corporation, as the amendments/constitution only relates to "individual" and "the right of the people" And while a corporation is made up of employees and owners, the corporation itself should not be able to claim the same individual right as the people.
This is just celebrity gossip except the celebrities are giant tech companies and I'm all here for it

AMD's statement that overclocking won't void warranty coverage for issues not caused by overclocking shouldn't be news. In the United States, that is literally just them following the law. Unfortunately it is newsworthy because it's extraordinarily common for businesses to absolutely violate this law with zero consequence.
I will note that I'm employed by AMD, but they aren't the only business I've been happy to see recently make a point of following this law, even if they don't explicitly reference it. Hopefully this becomes the norm going forward.

Wait, hold on. So, Epic Games is fighting Google, who in turn was fighting Apple, and while having both lost against Google, Epic Games say they fared better in their fight than Apple did... and nobody batted an eye... but when Epic Games called out Steam for having a monopoly, they got absolutely swamped and thrashed around the internet like a wet rag?
So, in hindsight, nobody gives a shit about who of those 3 wins whatever fight they're fighting, but all hell breaks lose if they try touching Steam and the way they do things.
It seems impossible to find something most people agree on these days, and man am I glad almost everyone agrees to the fact that Steam deserves the place they currently occupy.

those Steam Deck exhaust fumes are so fucking good. If it's bad for us, they should have put something in there to make it not smell so pleasant.
Epic: We want Apple/Google to change how they do stuff so they're not a monopoly and hoard folks' money
Also Epic: *makes games exclusive to the 45389th store/launcher forcing gamers to either give China money* (look at who owns Epic) *or wait to play it on Steam* (the superior platform where everyone already has most of their games) *or just play it on console* Truly fighting for the little guy.
