We are currently exploring opportunities for when all of those windows 10 systems are no longer viable to go to 11.
An alternative OS that keeps the hardware going.
We have been doing this for some of our Mac clients non-m chip.
When Apple says they will not play with you anymore but it's still good Hardware it's a shame to just throw the damn thing away!
That's how it started but Microsoft picked up the Apple mantra of limited Hardware.
      So here we go!!
Mint on Mac didn't fair so well.
Straight unbutu seems to be flawless on Mac.

I deleted Microsoft and went to Linux Mint 22. As with most people, Recall was a breaking point for me. High points of Mint, everything is easy to find. Getting up and running was easy, Install was a breeze. The "checklist" at startup was a nice touch as an introduction to a new operating system. Low points, in my excitement, I installed version 22 on release. After going through many versions of Microsoft, I should have known better and waited a month to let the patches catch up. Overall experience 99/100.

@@Xaito Garuda is what introduced me to Arch. I then switched to base Arch and now I'm running CachyOS. I just like Arch but then I first started using Linux in the 90's with the SLS release, so I'm very used to getting down and dirty into the internals with Linux. 🤪 That's why I prefer Arch which gives me more choice in what to do, and it allowed me to learn how Linux works under the hood as it has changed a lot since the SLS and Slackware days of yore when I first started.

    • @Xaito
      @Xaito 2 часа назад

@@iBolski I've had prior experience with ubuntu and redhat based server Linux, but I had close to no experience with desktop Linux. I appreciate Arch for what it is, but from a new desktop Linux User's perspective, it was a bit too much work for me to setup. Garuda has a sensible default config, update script and the Chaotic AUR. It let me start using the PC with a bare minimum of tweaking and tinkering. I like tinkering, but I prefer to not reinvent the wheel and then having to maintain my own hacky solutions to problems that got solved by people smarter than myself. ;)

Over the past month or so Linux Mint has provided me with all I needed and even some extras. The extras whilst not essential, allowed for a “be prepared” approach. ( pdf editor , gimp editor, alternative browser….
I had only one issue, Bluetooth acted up and I needed a restart. Linux Mint is a 9.3 of 10 for me..

I'm apparently one of the few people who actually _didn't_ mind Win8. I wasn't particularly reliant on the "classic" start menu to begin with, and all you had to do was press the Mod key (aka "Windows" key) to drop back into the familiar desktop. If you were the kind of person who already used keyboard shortcuts for most things, your workflow remained pretty much the same going from 7 (or XP in my case) to 8. Though apparently for most people, the concept of using a finger to physically press a button on the keyboard rather than click on one - a button that both looks like and is positioned analogously to the start button - was just too much to handle and made the entire OS unusable. Funny enough, since I switched from Win8 to Arch a little over a decade ago and use i3 as my window manager, I _still_ need to push that button to do basically anything.

NVIDIA 3060 is brilliant in Linux. I'm using it in Linux Mint 22 Xfce Edition, as well as Xfce version of Cachy OS on my gaming PC. Both my PC's have the same specs. I have been without Windows for two months now fully. Have been using Linux for many years, but always had Windows for gaming. Proton came out in 2018 and I thought it would not mount to much, but now the Steam Deck is out and Valve is doing a fantastic job in getting games to run properly, plus Glorious Egg Roll's proton versions which gives performance of the game a bit more oomph. I am fully committed now to Linux now. Great video and I hope your journey into Linux keeps going well.

Timeshift works really well. I use Mint version 21 and upgraded to version 22. Unfortunately my capture card, a Blackmagic, didn't work with version 22. It also appeared that OBS was only available as a flat pack which also doesn't work with the capture card. I spent a little time trying to get it working but decided it was easier to go back to version 21 which is still supported for another 2 years by which time hopefully everything will work. I done a timeshift update before the upgrade and used it to go back to version 21 and it worked flawlessly. Happily back on version 21 for now :)

In the long term it's always a good idea to check what companies support linux with drivers for printers, scanners and any hardware that's a bit more industry specific which most average people would not use. As it's the companies that put out the hardware that should be maintaining the driver support for linux, not users.

I got fed up with the blood suckers in Redmond many years ago and switched to Linux. At one point are another I have used Ubuntu, Linux Mint, a couple of Arch derivatives, OpenSUSE and now use POPOs on a box built by System76. Your findings are about what I would expect. Many of the Ubuntu based are much easier to use, though specific distros will have different mileage. One point for any switching to Linux, make your list of what you need to be able to do on the computer (edit photos, edit videos, play games, etc.) but don't get hung up running specific software.

I've tried many distros and my favorites are MX Linux, Manjaro, Fedora, Tails, Gnoppix, and finally my favorite Linux Mint. Linux Mint isn't perfect (no distro is), but it seems to be improving with each update and pretty stable overall. You can't beat having almost every single app 100% free either! Game compatibility is even getting a lot better in Linux. I would never go back to Windows on my personal computers (work I have no choice but Windows). I've gone through various distros and various desktops over the years (XFCE, Gnome2, Cinnamon) And now that the GNOME Project is intent upon breaking GTK+ (custmization and theming) I'm even looking at NsCDE (I was accustomed to CDE from AIX).
I had been using Linux Mint for many years, I had switched to Fedora because it related to my old job. Now that I'm no longer there I'm slowly dumping Fedora to go back to Linux Mint.

Also, you would have to be a die-hard CDE fan to want to go back. The Windows 3 GUI was based on CDE and it's functionality is arguably comparable.

They've decided to remove titlebars and menu bars and replaced them with their stupid "header bar". They force the UI to be flat and featureless, and even for Cinnamon that still has proper titlebars, you can't differentiate between foreground and background windows (GTK+ will render them all the same).
It wouldn't be a problem if all those changes stayed in GNOME, but they've decided if *they* despise customization, then no other desktop should be allowed it either. What do you expect from a project run by Microsoft fanboys?

While it might require a little more effort than slapping yet another ISO on pendrive of yours and spamming F8, it's much more rewarding because of the things you can learn while troubleshooting. After all you can figure out that different distros don't make big difference as long as they offer complete and recent enough repos.

If it’s a printer driver, those drivers aren’t even platform specific to begin with as they come as PPD files that can be simply imported in printer setup manually.

Don't know if you have ever heard of this, but you don't have to switch out hard drives every time you want to try out a new distro.
Install Boxes on your machine, and then when you have downloaded an ISO of a distro you want to test out (say, MX Linux or something), you can create a virtual machine and have another full OS running at the same time as your original mint -- no hardware swapping required! Runs pretty good, and with your setup, you could easily get it going in 10-15 minutes (minus download time for the ISO).

You still call Fedora your hands down favorite, except for the printer issue which you solved on Linux Mint. As a Fedora user since the early 2,000's, Here's my suggestion...
    Reinstall Fedora 40, run updates, then do this;
Open the virtualization program BOXES. Create a new box and install Linux Mint on it. Keep in mind that you can only assign half the RAM to the box as you have on your main system, per virtual instance. This should give you full operational capacity for all your needs. Alternatively, you could dual boot Fedora and Mint. This would give you double the RAM for your gaming as with BOXES.
As a side note, you can also use BOXES to test other distros as you see fit. Hope this helps.

From what i heard in this video i have formed the hypothesis that the reason that Linux Mint is the only Distro where both of your Printers have worked (that you have tested so far) is simply that Mint is the first Ubuntu based Distro that ships with both the HWE(HardWare Enablement) Kernel, which is a Kernel version made by Ubuntu specifically to support more Proprietary Hardware, aswell as most Ubuntu Libraries still intact. I suspect the driver for your Printer needs either something in the Kernel or one of those Libraries, which most of the specialist Ubuntu Distros do not ship out of the box. This basically means that you would probably have an OK time with any generalist Ubuntu based Distro aswell as Ubuntu itself.

I've used Endeavour and Cachy, and printer support definitely doesn't compare to that of something like Mint. However, during install you have the option to enable printer support out of the box, via checkbox. They have "Printing Support" and "HP Printer Support" in the optional software list. That doesn't mean the software will immediately work very easily after install as there is still the manual set up process, but it does help.
I like Cachy quite a bit, it's very similar to Endeavour and has some tools that remind of me Manjaro. There was another Arch release years ago called Antergos which was similar as well. Right now I'm just running my own build of Arch but if and when I upgrade my hardware in the next few days I'll probably wipe and try Cachy with all its performance optimizations.

PopOs == Giant Robots. Not my favorite. ArchLinux == as much as I like it I can't really get it to work correct without lots of research that I don't want to do. Linux Mint == good for me. Thanks for trying to get people to swtich from the dark side!

Absolutely. Does not matter which you like. The switch the Microsoft is the goal.

After i got a Steam Deck OLED and saw how well it ran games i switched to Linux to. I am running Fedora 40 now and have had no issues with it for my usage so far.
And when my dad needed a new desktop a few weeks ago i even installed Fedora on hes new machine, but with KDE as hes more used to older Windows. Hes old printer had a minor issue, but besides that everything works. I was slightly worried about him getting used to it, but so far hes only called me 1 time and overall he likes it.

I'm actually impressed by the number of distro's you are trying😂
I would have quit at Linux Mint. Because it just works. Out of the box. They make compatibility and functionality their priority. They are usually #1 or #2 on Distro Watch's DL rankings for a reason.
I also seem to remember that Arch distro's work better with the KDE desktop environment. But Arch "is" for people who like to tinker. Just not for me either!
Thanks for keeping this fun, and good luck looking for the "perfect" camera, I mean distro 😂

The Linux journey for me started back in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I have been using it sometimes, mostly to test out a few things. I did dual booting and sometimes VM. Your videos inspired me to use Linux as my main OS for a week (Pop_OS) which worked well with nvidia discrete graphics. Had to dual boot with Win 11 afterwards because I need it for work, but for most of my casual computing, it's a bit better and faster than Win. Yes, Linux has a few weird quirks, but you get used to it somehow.

Linux mint needs to be a better pressed Operating ‘System for the average person and everyday users, we need a broadchurch when it comes to Linux Mint. I hope you will get better soon, from the flu.

I've been saying something similar to this for awhile. Linux Mint has more or less won the evolutionary battle of "best overall Linux distro" and the Linux community should really get behind the idea of exclusively recommending Linux Mint as everyone's starting distro, while developers should also target Mint as the default distro for seamless integration into the Linux eco-system. Not saying other distros are useless or not needed, but life would be a lot easier for everyone if normies started associating Linux with Linux Mint in their minds.

Thank you or doing these. They are very informative.
I want to get away from Windows so badly, I can't begin to describe it...!
My biggest hold up is peripheral drivers.
I'm a gamer. I'm also disabled; Multiple Sclerosis.
I recently bought an Azeron Cyron keypad, and the change it has made in my gaming enjoyment is unmeasured!
Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be anything available at the moment to make it compatible with any of the Linux destros. I'm not willing to have a $260 paper weight on my desk and go back to fumbling with trying to hit the correct controls instead of getting to enjoy playing the game.
    Maybe one day...
    I keep hoping.

That is a good reason to stick with Windows. Sadly. Not all companies embrace Linux. Hell. It was a long while for them to embrace Apple.

Switched to Linux Mint a year ago, from W10. I keep an old 2009 MacBook around to update my iPad and serve BlueBubbles so I can get iMessage on my Pixel phone. Otherwise, Mint does everything I need.

Arch is a build it your own distro. You have to understand that first before jumping into an Arch distro. They're still Arch, but right out of the box they don't work the way you want it, unlike Arch. Have tried most of the distros mentioned. To me there's nothing like Arch. Have 3 machines running Arch now, oldest one been running for 64 days with no problems.

8 years strong on strictly linux, and almost 100% opensuse (though it has its quirks and may not be for the first time transitioning users). But to clarify linux isn't Unix, it is a ground up project to recreate Unix as open-source software. Also, many linux distros use btrfs, which support snapshots, allowing you to go back in time to undo changes, something to look into if you aren't already aware.

💩(You told me to do it.) I've been following your series with interest since the beginning. I also settled on Linux Mint and have been very happy with it. And, I set up Timeshift to take a snapshot I can roll back to every time I try something that I think might be risky, like when I installed CasaOS on top of Linux Mint, even though it isn't officially supported. I'm apparently the only person in the world, but I'm actually interested in how Recall turns out. Maybe it will be amazing. Who knows. That being said, I don't plan on being the guinea pig (not that I have a computer with an NPU).
