The Dark Side of Being a Food Delivery Person | Informer

- Опубликовано: 18 май 2021
- A female delivery driver shares her experiences of demoralizing working conditions, sexual harassment, and neglect from her company - all to get customers their food.
Having worked for over two years for a major online food ordering and delivery platform, she explains how she has experienced issues common to everyone in the industry - like low and delayed pay - but also that being a woman brings extra struggles.
She has been assaulted by a customer and often feels unsafe, but may lose money if she turns down a job in an area she doesn't want to go to. She reveals that since the pandemic, hygiene issues have run rampant, with female drivers being forced to pee and handle their periods on the side of the road.
Informer is a series where we hear the anonymised confessions and insights of people on the inside of different industries, institutions and events.

I got a taxi business and i myself drive. im 26 and i've never ever had someone say something to me. it's always how u present urself and how talk to people. U can defeat humans in 2 ways: either with force or kindness.
@@prod.byGats I think it comes down to being at the wrong place, wrong time. I used to drive a shuttle bus/taxi cab (depending on the night) and I was subject to two separate incidents. Yes, I agree it is how you present yourself and talk to others, but sometimes you encounter bad actors. I was unfortunate in that regard.
HBO had Taxicab Confessions years ago.
there's already interviews and movies about them
My dad was a taxi driver for over 30 years, he built his own taxi company & had a bunch of employees, but he still went working himself because he was used to it. One morning he came back home & his face was full of bruises because someone tried to rob him. Another time someone was aiming a pistol on his head while they were driving. Thank God nothing really serious ever happened to him, but the job itself is very very dangerous, especially if you work the late night shifts.
Jesus. I did food delivery for a while and I was never, ever treated this way. I wonder who the hell she was working for.
It obviously wasn't a job She could handle. She wouldn't be doing delivery driving in the first place if she wasn't already low on cash and nobody else would hire her.
Not really who you work for it's more the areas.
My uncle got shot at, damn near stabbed, attacked ect as a pizza man
It Depends where you deliver. Some nasty people order only to rob, Rape, kidnap and torture the person delivering their food. It's a shitty world out there so just cuz you haven't experienced it doesn't mean it doesn't happen.
I am a female food courier - this woman is a drama Queen. I’ve been delivering if you want to include pizza since 1993 in suburban and urban ghetto areas. Nobody is changing their tampons in the street.
I always thought, even before COVID hit, that these guys are angels. Amount of times their service allowed me to eat while I was sick/preparing for exams/writing my thesis is uncountable. And during this pandemic, I came to the conclusion that delivery couriers and doctors must get a huge monument to commemorate their service to society. Why would people abuse them is way beyond me
I am a female who delivered in Boston for two years everything she said is 100% accurate.
@@jacquir8331 didn't ask but ok?
It’s not hard to jump in a car and deliver food. Do u want a medal? I’d rather tip the chef that makes my food.
Why people can abuse them is bc they are not right in the head.
Lol I don't use delivery service because they feel like they are entitled to tips and bring the food cold most of the time this one time the guy cancelled my order after an hour of waiting lol angels? You wish buddy lol.
I've always felt a big amount of empathy for people who work for the food industry. Dealing with rude, toxic customers, low wage and the list goes on. I think a petition to pay these people more should be a thing because honestly it's one of the reasons why people in this industry are soo depressed.

Prefectly fits her wirk ethic
As a female delivery driver myself I can attest to almost everything she said especially the fact that it is a male dominated industry and it is often a pleasant surprise of seeing female couriers
Regarding the payment unfortunately it is also true that the business often deals with payment issues to the point where you’re working more than you’re getting paid but on the other hand I enjoy working as a courier because you’re basically your own boss and decide when and where you want to work and how many hours also the fact that you get the chance to explore the city and doing you’re own thing as long as you do your job is also amazing as well
It’s very bittersweet I convince myself that it is just a job that I got to work extra hard for and that it helps that the job is pretty fun
Also Since working as a courier I’ve been tipping the delivery drivers everytime I can because I understand how hard the job can be so definitely appreciate the an insider is sharing the experience of millions of couriers around the world who’re dealing with the same issues 👍🏾

Throughout the last 3 years of the pandemic, I thank god for grocery delivery and takeaway drivers. I'm entirely homebound, and from all sides, the people delivering my food as well as others who judge me for using these services constantly think I am just a lazy student ordering food because they can't be bothered to go out and get it themselves - when in reality, I'm often bedbound, don't own a car and am medically not allowed to drive, and I'm too far away from anything (even with a mall and a gas station like 2kms down the road) for me to use my wheelchair to get there. I am so thankful for the entire delivery industry because you're not just helping people get a meal, often you're giving me back a tiny bit of independence or the ability to keep living.
They're often horrible/inconsiderate of people with disabilities tbh
These companies can also deactive your account at anytime for any made up reason. Like how some customers make a compliant that their food delivery was already opened, or didn't arrive at all, just so they can try to get a free meal. And because of that, some delivery drivers get caught in the crosshairs and are banned for life. It's not fair, and it still goes on today.
Goodness, I feel so fortunate that I did not experience this when I did Uber Eats. I have seen it a few times on RUclips.

Antwan must be in mid management!
While this woman has experienced a lot worse than I have, food delivery is generally not a godsend.
Most drivers get tricked into losing money, and it takes knowledge and diligence to avoid losing money in this industry. Its not a job I would ever recommend, because unlike most jobs, you cannot just do it and make money. In fact, if you do it thoughtlessly, then you absolutely will lose money.

It's for our safety
In a free and democratic world you have to hide your identity because your company will either try to get you killed or arrested. The psychosis of these billionaires is getting worse and they're not gonna stop. We all need to quit falling for collectivist ideologies and start fighting for the rights of individual autonomy and real freedom. We sacrifice so much to people who really have no justifiable right to control any of us because they can't even help themselves from living in fear from a capitalist system that produces and manufactures it to the population. It's a damn shame how blind a population can get and how easily they can be used to attack anyone who opposes oppression. Now is the time to destroy the narrative and to hold these criminal thugs accountable because the laws in place are not meant to effect those who rule over others.

I saw a delivery guy confused about where to go in my apartment complex. He was on the phone with a woman who was completely screeching at him and I could hear her through the phone. The dude's GPS didn't take him to her building and the numbers on the buildings were almost impossible to see. I helped direct him to the right building, but the look on his face. Oh my god. His long face reflected the depths of human misery. He had found himself so servile as to be yelled at like a servant, especially by people living in cheap apartments.
Customer service is absolute hell, but I've never worked a job where the interactions are strictly 1 on 1 like delivery drivers do. This allows people to feel more anonymous and be more abusive without other customers or employees as witnesses.
@KevKMaC Then you get fired and have to pay for the food that you did not deliver.
Problem not solved. Problem is now worse.
@KevKMaC Unfortunately with zero hour contracts they can tell you you are no longer needed for anything.
That is what they were made for.
To remove workers rights.
@KevKMaC you can get fired for any reason at any time, they will fire people based on bad customer reviews. The bad customers even lord it over your head that they will "get you fired" while they are ranting at you. They will straight up fabricate stories. And you have no one to turn to because you are employed by an app.
Thats why God created hell

I spent a bit of time sleeping rough on the streets last winter. In the early hours of the morning I went into a fried chicken place and ordered some food. Next to me was a female delivery person and despite her working horrible hours in a shitty town for next to nothing she paid for my food. I was grateful but I felt bad for taking it because I thought she's probably had a worse night than me. This video's confirms what I thought.
I've done every gig company and have had some interesting stories particularly doing uber. Some of what she says i can definitely agree with. The ability they have to shave hundreds every week from your pay is just a part of the job. I would have to complain about every single job cause either they short you on miles or shave your tips. At night when drive thrus are long, most restaurants won't hand deliver your food out front, you have to sit in the drive thru. Sometimes the drive thru will be full of delivery pick ups but at the front of the line is an SUV full of drunk kids who take 30 minutes ţ o get thru while the rest of the line are ready orders getting cold and losing money. Finally when you've reached the window your phone buzzes, there's a message, degrading as all hell lecturing you that they now have to go to sleep that they gave you ample time and failed to do the most basic task. Then they'll say i see that you messaged me that the line was long and in bold letters with exclamation points, THAT WAS 45 MINUTES AGO!!!, can you be any more incompetent, I don't appreciate you stringing me along with lies, the drive thru never takes this long. Hopefully you get your priorities together, people want workers who finish jobs not those who provide excuses. You failed. Better luck next time. Then your gig company pays 50% so you just made $3.50 for 1 hours work. That's minimum wage in the 70s
In our country they prioritizd delivery foods more than walkins hence no cold food

I do my best to make drivers' lives easier. Meeting them outside before they call so they don't have to wait, generous tips, saying thank you, and the most simple but imo one of the most important, just being friendly.
Bless you bc that’s my pet peeve when I’m delivering food. it’s like really u can’t meet me outside to get ur food and u know u have xtra security on the doors.🙏🏾
Lol meet them outside so THEY don’t have to wait? If I meet them outside it’s because I don’t want to wait. They waste so much time that your food gets cold while they’re looking for your house. If I have to chase them around my neighborhood outside to catch their car, I might as well drive and get the food myself, and on top of that they expect a tip too. I get that it’s a tough job, but remember, customers are paying higher prices for the food, then are charged extra for a service fee and another fee, and on top of that the peer pressure to tip. It’s not like they are doing all this as a favor for free, so we have to go above and beyond to thank them. If these companies are making their jobs miserable, it’s not up to the customer to compensate for that by doing extra work.
love you
I can totally sympathise with this woman for her bad experiences but as a DoorDash driver in Australia, this has not been my experience at all. Pay is fine considering how straightforward the job is and in Australia tipping is not expected for wait staff so as a driver I don’t expect tips either. It is definitely not a stable stand alone income but as a side hustle where you can choose your own hours, it is pretty good. Also because of COVID, most people want contactless delivery so you don’t have to deal with customers much anyway. And the ones I have had direct contact with have been nice and friendly. I’m curious to other Australian deliver drivers if your experience has been positive or negative?
Hey Freya, I'm an Australian dasher and have done about 150 deliveries, all been with no issue from the customer side of things. Only problems with the restaurants themselves, maybe being too slow to prepare the orders...
I'm kinda late and I'm from the US and I've been dashing since 2021, and although I have encountered some nasty people here and there, the overwhelming majority have been respectful and nice. I guess it depends on location but I've personally never had any issues with people like that. most people I've brought orders to aren't crazy psychopaths, or at least I hope they aren't. some tip nothing, while others tip so much to the point where I believe I dont deserve all that money either.
As for the woman in this video I would say cases like these do happen but they're really not as common as you'd expect. I know my case could be an exception but I'm not alone either. most of us have decent experiences out there
I've been delivering for Uber eats for nearly 2 months Monday to Friday, sometimes weekend, I've had mostly good interactions, the weirdest thing that's happened to me was whilst delivering, was during the morning hours, I delivered to a man who was completely naked. In this line of work I like having a good smile, be friendly with customers and show good customer service, to hopefully get a tip. When I greeted him he didn't say a word, I handed him the food, he didn't say a word, I said goodbye have a nice day, he didn't say a word, nothing, must of been a bit embarrassed.
Aside from that, most people are pretty nice and are usually happy when you arrive because you bring their food, occasionally you get the quiet types and sometimes nasty vibes, sometimes either the business or customer, or both, deem you being late for pickup, it's sad when that happens especially when you've just started your ride (logged on) and realise nobody in the area was there to pick it up. But yeah, mostly good. I enjoy it. I will say I have only seen 1 female food delivery driver and about 50 male drivers in my area.
"must of been" Must of? That's how you think those words are supposed to be arranged? You MUST OF left your phone at the restaurant? A bird MUST OF pooped on your car's windscreen? MUST OF????? Some people's stupidity astounds me.

Worked pizza delivery while going to school. Delivered to some questionable areas late at night that didn't feel safe. Been threatened, been verbally abused by drunk customers. Thankfully never assaulted or robbed, but I know others who were. You're more often than not delivering to someone who had a shitty day, who's too tired to cook, they're hungry so they're grumpy and you simply exist as a target of opportunity for their frustrations. It's a demeaning job because people look at you like you're bottom rung, and it's like you basically start to internalize it.
I was thankfully able to move on from that and start a career in the field that I was studying in, but it took a good year to mentally move past the delivery job.

One night, a younger guy tried to get me into his apartment. I had no idea where I was, nut got away and made it home safely.
I live in not the greatest neighborhood in California but even when the sun is down I still need to make that money. Unfortunately, living in California is not cheap which means we have to make sacrifices to make ends meet - even if it involves risking our safety just to make a decent wage. People disregard the fact that delivery drivers have to make many other sacrifices. Not only that but we're paying for gas out of pocket and dealing with traffic just to name a few, yet people still feel like we don't deserve tips or respect 🙄
I've had the same experience with neighbours over my life. They never abused my partner being a man but wait to get me on my own and let rip on me. Every time it in rages him. Nevermind folk coming on to you aggressively, I never get in a taxi alone in Nottingham were I live, unless I have a woman driver. Most drivers are creepy and ask things like are you married? Do you want to get married? And other creepy stuff. No wonder the women here are rock hard.

My math teacher unfortunately had to take uber eats as a side hustle due to being criminally underpaid. He has told us some of his experiences driving late at night after a day of teaching. One of them including accidentally picking up orders for some of the worst parts in town, sometimes completely shutting off the app after delivering the order to not get requests in those areas. One time he literally had a gun pointed at his head while in his car, and he just sat there and offered his credit card, because that was all he had. Fortunately they left. But this industry is horrible and not worth the $5 job.
I once caught my uber delivery driver eating my meal in his car lmao man forgot he had tracker on 🤦♂️
‘forgot he had his tracker on’ you do realise there is never an ‘off’ or ‘on’ button? and that we know we are being tracked because it’s an app feature?
Lol almost got caught last night eating some dudes Wendy's, how did you catch my mans tho?
I never order anymore through delivery service for food just for that reason

@@jackstraw262 I'm a delivery driver... Been one for a long time... I don't do it... But I've seen it happen!
Any business that pays low wage and relies on us to pay their wage as “tips” is a damn business that shouldn’t exist. Yes even waiter/waitress jobs there hourly should be way higher.
Finally someone with a thinking brain!!!
Luckily we got a decent minimum wage here that applies to (almost) everyone
Thats why we dont tip in norway. And when we travel we usually over tip screaming take my money but dont piss in my food
I think the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that delivery and cab hire platforms should treat drivers as employees and provide them with benefits as opposed to contractors. Many were against it, because that meant it would take away their work hour flexibility.
No actual bartender or waitress wants a higher hourly wage because their wage should ideally only cover taxes on tips in America. They only make a wage from the restaurant if they made less than minimum wage for the shift. If they make wages then they won't make tips which vastly outweigh wages. Stop speaking for an industry you don't belong. Talk to your bartender instead. You will find they don't want you changing a thing.
Another piece of the Dark Side is. These companies can also deactive your account, even if you canceled too many of your orders, and you've been waiting there for over an half an hour at the pickup.
I worked as a beverage delivery driver in Germany, overall the working conditions were quite a bit better (as we were proper employees) but what the interviewee says about people not considering the labor that goes into these sorts of services holds true regardless. That was very noticeable when it came to customers showing any sort of appreciation either verbally or as a tip (not saying I expected tips to begin with). The more 'working class' a customer seemed, the friendlier they tended to be and on average they tipped better too. The more financially well off a customer seemed, the less they tended to treat me on an eye-to-eye level, they ordered more (which meant hauling more crates, usually up several flights of stairs, for me) and tipped less, if they tipped at all.

I do deliveries and I can hand on heart say I've never had any type of horrible experience with anyone.
Ive had maybe 15 jobs in my life. The easiest, hands down, by far is UberEats deliveries. I love to drive though, and I love working when I want, and sleeping when I want.I hate having a boss over my shoulder. I hate dealing with customers all day, a little interaction is nice though. The pay is better than many seem to think as well, if you are quick and put in heavy hours. That said, I am a 34 year old male. I've done almost 2000 deliveries and had _maybe_ 2 or 3 rude customers, and it was mildly rude comments/texts like "are you coming??" because I was finding parking in Vancouver rush hour, for 1 or 2 minutes heaven forbid. Clearly a different experience for women in UK.
I’ve been doing Uber eats and haven’t experienced any of this whatsoever, I’ve loved my experience. But I respect her experience and I’m sending her 💕
Yea same. I work in a safe town though. And I have pepper spray. So far I haven’t even been rude to. 😀
Probably depends on the area you're delivering as well
I totally respect delivery food drivers! They have a hard job. As a working mom with 3 kids we depend many nights on Waiter or some other service like that. I also try to split the tip between cash and on my card. So they don't have to claim all of it if they don't want to. Thanks for all you do it's much appreciated!
Sending her what? Absolutely nothing at all? Ah, yes, I'm sure your nothing at all will be a great help to her. But what's REALLY important here is that everybody know you are a good person and that YOU feel better about yourself for sending the absolutely nothing. Can I be your friend? I want to worship at your altar. You are the greatest human who has ever lived. You're my hero. Please, don't ever change.
Yes same here I’ve never had this experience while doing Uber.
I've been a delivery driver I know your pain retail is also fucking awful
You tried telemarketing? If you lived near me I would hire you as a part time maid. Looking for one now.
I've delivered food on and off for many years. Have only been yelled at or called names once by a drunk, mentally disturbed person. I never receive abuse.
This series is quite the eye opener
Amazon is close to being like this towards their drivers. They say safety is priority but once things get tight they seem to push us along and care a lot less about rules and safety.
It should be a rule for Amazon in unsafe areas. No deliverys pass 12 pm. Before the hoodlums come out. Go in early when everyone asleep or just getting. Up. Get in get out.
I used to be on the helpline for the drivers and it sounds like a terrible job. They have to pay for their own petrol, have to go in all manner of dodgy areas in all weather, down dangerous country roads etc etc
As a dasher I can say that training isn’t needed at all as I didn’t receive any myself and felt completely fine if you have a functioning brain. Go get food, find customer, drop off. We literally get to choose yes or no on every delivery so just avoid the sketchy neighborhoods. As far as “labour” is concerned, the mileage, store and address location and estimated completion time is displayed before you accept so… we literally sign up for it… and as far as peeing is concerned, DoorDash allows us to place ourselves of unlimited 45 min breaks at any time (other than mid delivery, duh) so just break out, drive to a gas station or food market which remained open… just critically think for half a second… I have to add that during lockdown I personally have had issues with restaurants rejecting bathroom access but to insist that you ARE “staff” is just ridiculous. We ARE and even file our taxes as Independent contractors, this isn’t an oppressive term used by the restaurant giants to smite us down. It also makes sense that they would not want to expose their employees to delivery drivers of all people mid-lockdown. The victim mentality is just appalling.
Right. I do Uber eats. What would you need training for. Get the food and deliver it. It's not rocket science.
@@cathyizzo7886 yeah i honestly enjoy it.

@@kevlarburrito6693 With the exception of the sexual harassment encounters, which are just blatantly horrible, every other issue they spoke of was self inflicted. You can’t dig yourself into a hole and cry “woe is me!”. For example they say that they feel that they are being “punished” for trying to feel safe because they loose their minimum pay, yea no. You loose your pay because you did not complete the service you committed yourself to. I even mentioned several methods on how all these “problems” are completely avoidable, yet you decide to make an edgy retort instead, you bulletproof wrap. People can’t expect to remain ignorant and lazy yet demand to be entitled to the empathy of others as well as the fruits of labour that they did not earn.
I use to be a manager at McDonald's. And one thing I truly notice is the people that we dealt with that were rude we're taking out their life problems on us this happens to a lot of food service people. My best tip for someone in the food industry let's say they're being rude cuz they got to wait one thing that always shuts them up and say hey I wanted give you fresh food cuz I didn't want to give you old product that typically 99% of the time shuts them up. But for the customers that were rude to my employees I gave my employees full discretion to stand their ground and I backed them up every time
She is right. Worked for Door Dashers here in US. Many men want more than their food. U have to explain to the company when u get a order that is miles away u must tell them the miles there and back right after you are done. If u dont u wont get the money for the miles. Glad i got a reg job before covid hit. Good to make money during covid but there were so many Dashers they would fight for each job.

Not every blue collar job has nowhere to go to the bathroom. This makes the situation more dangerous and downright intolerable for women. I know it's also terrible and disgusting for blokes too, but not having anywhere to change a tampon? It's barbaric, at least Primark and Tesco have restrooms.

I did food delivery in my early 20's in college. I only experienced one incident that was scary in the 2 years I did it. And it was really quite scary. I was in a complex, knocked on a door and a man came around the corner demanding to know what I was doing. I explained I was delivering food and he just told me to put the pizzas down. I thought I was being robbed. I was 20. Turns out, I had the wrong apartment number on the ticket and he was mad about that. Instead of explaining himself he just kept demanding I put the food down. I was about to run when he finally said he would go get the money.

I deliver for probably the largest pizza chain and they pay the bare minimum wage, when fuel prices doubled they continued to give us a forty cents gas allowance, during covid they raised their delivery charge to $4.99 and drivers don't get one penny of that, did I mention I also deliver in the worst neighborhood, you can't even call it a neighborhood it's downtown inner-city ghetto and somehow I've managed to not be robbed for 6 years now. The only reason I stay is because they let me have time off to tour with my band, not many places will allow employees to miss three months out of the year.
