There were rumors that they got disqualified later, because they tried to take off the tail as a souvenir. But I still have to hear back from Stefan if that's right ;). They didn't have the most distance either?
That articulating front wing was amazing. Rotated to provide lift as the plane nosed down off the platform and then went back level for the glide. Those guys know the aerodynamic requirements of flugtag planes.
The tractor design, with pitch adjustable front canard (at 4:25) really deserved a little coverage by you guys at FliteTest. It was the only one in the video that actually demonstrated controlled flight, and I assume it was the winner, although I don't think you mention that in the video. The CG was obviously correct, allowing for the wings to get lift and not stall, and the initial nose down attitude provided added speed that was converted into lift.
It's nose heavy because of all the donuts Stephan ate! In all seriousness, congratulations and thank you for your time at FFE and Oshkosh. We love you guys!
Man.. that was really nice design.. I would love to make a suggestion. Use a freewing design. Where the wing free floats up and down to a certain degree around its spar. you will have to counterweight it to get it to level when not moving. This will allow the wing to maintain its own equilibrium and not stall during that initial sudden drop. If you can do this on a canard would be even more helpful because the canard provides the immediate lift as it is further out in front. Perhaps a longer fuselage as well thus that wing out front can begin flying perhaps before it even gets to the drop off point.
mr pie, I like those colors too. Can flite test put that color scheme on an rc? I have been watching since the begging ing and will see u at flite fest east!
... just a quick and rather dodgy question... is it possible to re-build this in a sturdier form register it and tow launch it? (you guys have effectively made a proper AC. just add a rudder, ailerons, flaps and a gremlin soft toy up front.
great job guys but one thing i want to ask is that why u made the front wing span shorter than the rear one please do reply becoz i am eger to know that
The center of gravity needs to be in front of the main (largest) wings. In a conventional craft, the stabilizer pushes down with negative lift to keep the center of gravity (which is in front of the main wing) up and stable. This negative lift creates stability but, must be overcome with an increased positive lift from the main wing. In a canard configuration, the horizontal stabilizer creates positive lift, which reduces the main wing load... however, as made evident by this flte test, cannards will naturally stall and dive without sufficient (higher than a conventional craft) airspeed. The beauty of canard-designed aircraft was lost because of the slow take off speed; the excellent-stability during stall (a hallmark of the canard design) was exactly what landed them in the drink... not CG.
Hey guys I live in Pittsburgh but didn't know that you guys would be out here. When is the next time you guys will be out here? I'm a die hard fan that would love to see some of you!
They did talk about it in vlogs and lots on social media, Facebook, Instagram, ... That's how they got the people's choice award in the first place :).
What song is at 5:34? I checked out both artists that are listed and listened to a ton of music from them, but I can't find that one song. Anybody help?
"You mess with the bull, you get the horns." Ain't that the truth... Congratulations guys, well deserved. Next year let's fix that CG and bring home the gold!
With cg at the right place and a faster push.. would have flown much further! Anyway congrats FT team for making this nice plane, you are always fun to watch :)
I don't understand their distance estimation at all. We (the Primanti's sandwich plane) flew the farthest (in the air, at least) and were told we got 63 feet. We landed farther than the supposed 78 feet of Flight at the Roxbury and 120 foot flight of Survivor Tractor, not counting their sweet on the water glide, though! Thanks for putting up the vid with all these flights from the same angle. At least I feel a little better now, haha! Btw, in case no one's ever told you, you Flite Test guys are awesome!
Thanks! It was a labor of love! I don't think there was one team member there that didn't feel a small sense of loss as they drug everyones craft away to trash barge.
Hey Jon!! It was a pleasure hanging out with yall and enjoying the day! You never know how it is all going to unfold, but I tell you what... A BLAST none the less! ;) keep on rockin my man!
Good to see you guys in the Burgh! Nothing like a 30 mph Allegheny impact to say you had a good day! I will always keep rockin, you guys do the same. I'll make it a point to bring the fam out to Flitefest next year and get the kids building these crazy machines we enjoy so much.
looks a bit heavy for such a short distance and low drag .....i think in these kind of contests using light materials is the best to go for, like a normal hangglider would probably go much further than whole wings made out of plywood
Siete dei grandi Big Big, avrei dato chissà cosa per essere li con voi a vedere il vostro tuffo nell'acqua ,sarà per la prossima volta."magari"ciao a tutti voi
Love it. I wonder ifvthey would allow electric motors take a giant electric motor to try abd fly lol. But damn yalls plane looks amazing looks like it would fly as a giant rc plane. I would love to do flugtag but that drop is high as heck kinda scarry. But some of those actually glide a little
I was expecting you guys to do a power loop and ride off into the sunset kinda thing.🤷♂️ Oh well, i guess it did look like a fun event to go to tho. Good job dudes👏🏽
I am disapppinted. I thought in the beginning of this video you were the winner. You are the enginnering but how you miscalculated in creating this glide... woh... expecting from you to win next year competion..... do great.... 🖒
When they have it again, I hope you all try again. Just make something as light and as big as possible. This idea was great but was too heavy to be pushed fast enough. Just make a big delta. Maximum area for minimum weight for slowest flight.
Andrew G It makes me jealous, I went to Mesquite schools and of course Flitetest didn't exist at the time. I'll likely put my son in Mesquite schools, by the time he's in high school Flitetest probably won't be around. Luckily Flitetest has paved the way for cheap diy foam board planes, if my son is interested, I will make it happen. If I had Flitetest growing up, I definitely would have been into it, all I had was a balsa Cessna that never got skinned and I never would have been able to afford to make fly. I tried to get a rc plane, I managed to get a cheap electric trainer for a birthday or Christmas with no control surfaces and differential thrust. I had no clue what CG was, I got it airborne, crashed it and could never make it fly again.
Too bad theres no way to see the center of gravity and center of lift like in kerbal space program Pretty much the most important data when building a plane
You guys sent it! Thanks for coming out!
Thanks for having us! We def enjoyed ourselves AS ALWAYS! Sometimes you just have to SEND IT! ;)
I bought the f18 blue angels the day you guys did a review, my favorite plane by far I built a bomb drop in it!
Red Bull
Where are my wings
Red Bull
Nice to see some more flugtag things that actually try to fly. Just a bunch of things on wheels tipped over the edge I feel is rather boring.
I think that mixture of booth is fun to watch.
Raz Taz to do that
It is a blast to see BOTH sides of the spectrum... it DEF makes for an interesting watch! ;)
Looks like all the competition had forward center of gravity problem.
NitzkaClips Literally everyone had that issue, they should just put the people in the back
That’s why that purple one smashed it they knew what to do
I think a little more acceleration and most wouldn't fly even that bad
I don't think any of them bother to flight test their designs before the contest.
Exactly .
That purple tractor was amazing!
Happy to learn that my vote went towards you guys winning the people's choice award. Well done to everyone involved!
4:25 was the best. btw ft colors were really good
I agree, they should have been the winners. Their plane got a lot of distance.
There were rumors that they got disqualified later, because they tried to take off the tail as a souvenir. But I still have to hear back from Stefan if that's right ;). They didn't have the most distance either?
they prolly took the whole thing as a souvenir now that they were disQed
haha! That tail wasn't budging! Andres glued that thing on TIGHT! ha
That articulating front wing was amazing. Rotated to provide lift as the plane nosed down off the platform and then went back level for the glide. Those guys know the aerodynamic requirements of flugtag planes.
That plane looked awesome! Congrats to the FT Stem schools that participated in the various components of design. Kudos to all of them! Well done!
I'm the one that cut out a lot of the ribs on the scroll saw at flite fest. Awesome to see something I helped build fly

Congrats Flite Test, 2 Years in a row Peoples choice winner!!!!!!!!!

All the fish in the river: What The....

Love those Naval colors Flitetest. Keep it up, I been watching your videos since about 2013.
mr pie, I like those colors too. Can flite test put that color scheme on an rc? I have been watching since the begging ing and will see u at flite fest east!
We were going for the classic PT17 look!!
Okay and being honest, it was those colors we could find the most monokote in :P
www.pt17.com/pt17.jpg
WarblesOnALot why so long of a comment... when you can just say that those weren't naval colors
Seen many PT-19s and Stearmans sporting those colors.
Geeze the competition this year was intense. They took all the notes from you guys.
... just a quick and rather dodgy question... is it possible to re-build this in a sturdier form register it and tow launch it? (you guys have effectively made a proper AC. just add a rudder, ailerons, flaps and a gremlin soft toy up front.

"A little nose heavy" lol
This video has inspired me greatly, in deciding my next project. A free flight canard aeroplane! Excellent work Flite Test!
Nice job guys...hey what David cutter track is that? Thanks!
Yeah great vid but who won the distance flight?
Hey guys I live in Pittsburgh but didn't know that you guys would be out here. When is the next time you guys will be out here? I'm a die hard fan that would love to see some of you!
They seemed to have kept it a secret.
Dasdfjkl ya I knew of the event but I didn't know they were coming.
They did talk about it in vlogs and lots on social media, Facebook, Instagram, ... That's how they got the people's choice award in the first place :).
Anytime you don't win a competition, but consider it a good day, in my book, is still a win. You guys did great!
what I'm loving about your videos they are entertaining with zero cringy content
Thanks my friend! We appreciate it!
Congrats on the Peoples Choice award, you guys were a shoe in. Where can I get some Flitest coveralls?
What song is at 5:34? I checked out both artists that are listed and listened to a ton of music from them, but I can't find that one song. Anybody help?
Awesome job guys! It was nice meeting you down there for the Flugtag!
Great meeting you Michael! Thanks for coming out and supporting all the teams and REDBULL! ;)
I was really hoping for you guys to set a new world record. Maybe next time. As always a joy to watch. Love you guys.
How many total groups? All day festivities. Cool
Congrats on the Peoples Choice, and best looking attempt. I think a nose up dolly, and as you noted better CG.
You guys had a great plane. I am sorry that you didn't win, but it was great to see all of you just having a great time.
"You mess with the bull, you get the horns." Ain't that the truth... Congratulations guys, well deserved. Next year let's fix that CG and bring home the gold!
Never heard of flugtag before this evening and without trying, here it is.
Come on you guys! A team from Flitetest should set the all time distance record for an event like this.
This is easily my favorite channel
Nice job! 6 hours is a pretty impressive build time. I'm sure you will do even better next year!
So when does the speed built kit come out?
מ
Can you guy show us how to setup fpv on the versacopter please!!!
With cg at the right place and a faster push.. would have flown much further! Anyway congrats FT team for making this nice plane, you are always fun to watch :)
I'm curious does anyone from FliteTest have an Aerospace/Aviation background?
What's the music in the strart??
I can't find it.
Congrats at Flugtag 2017 getting people's choice.
Thanks so much for helping us achieve it!! You and the rest of the community are the reason behind our success ALWAYS! ;)
So I am guessing you guys aren't going to be going to Nashville for the next one?
Looks like you were one Stephen nose heavy. Fun ride, beautiful plane!!
I don't understand their distance estimation at all. We (the Primanti's sandwich plane) flew the farthest (in the air, at least) and were told we got 63 feet. Loved your design too :)
Thanks! It was a labor of love! I don't think there was one team member there that didn't feel a small sense of loss as they drug everyones craft away to trash barge.
Jon Ragland
Time stamp?
Flitetest, when are you releasing a mini ft spitfire?
Good question! ha at this point.. NO IDEA! ha
Is there any way I could email you guys? I just have some questions
Where can I get some of those sweet goggles y'all are wearing!!! no seriously where, do you have a link?
Amazon or Ebay. Just search for Pilot Goggles or something like that.
looks a bit heavy for such a short distance and low drag .....i think in these kind of contests using light materials is the best to go for, like a normal hangglider would probably go much further than whole wings made out of plywood
Siete dei grandi Big Big, avrei dato chissà cosa per essere li con voi a vedere il vostro tuffo nell'acqua ,sarà per la prossima volta."magari"ciao a tutti voi
You guys are living the dream -- have so much fun -- see you next year at F F West
that purple one did super good too, awesome video :))
I hope to get to see you guys at red bull flugtag one day.
It looks like so much fun :D
FANTASTIC time! DEF a thing everyone needs to have on their bucket list! ;)
I love you guys so freaking much.
good job; I do like the background stuff of this event = thank you
That pilot (big head) warrants a bigger prop...! Looks like everyone had fun, and that's the BEST of times!
Dammit! I had planned to go to the Regatta, and skipped out. If I had known you guys were going to be there, I'd have went!
pretty sure they went to the last one. pretty sure they'll catch a few more after this.
Love it. I wonder ifvthey would allow electric motors take a giant electric motor to try abd fly lol. But damn yalls plane looks amazing looks like it would fly as a giant rc plane. I would love to do flugtag but that drop is high as heck kinda scarry. But some of those actually glide a little
Guys! Come on! Got to do it again, and win! 👍
Everyone seems to be putting too much weight on the front. Is that a regulation or does no one know how this works?
No one knows how it works? just a guess ;)
Love the intro to the team then seeing them fly. Lots of work editing- nice job
Love this channel
I was expecting you guys to do a power loop and ride off into the sunset kinda thing.🤷♂️ Oh well, i guess it did look like a fun event to go to tho. Good job dudes👏🏽
Omg you guys did an amazing job again!
Awesome!!!
Nice job!!
Congrats on that award!!!
Hey Flite Test. Love your videos there great.
you guys should do a video about free style for drones!
Do the rules restrict the width and length of the wings?
Doesn't say anything about the width (chord) of the wings, but wingspan 10 m, weight 150 kg.
CHINGOOOOOOOON ¡¡¡. greetings from Mexico.
I am disapppinted. I thought in the beginning of this video you were the winner. You are the enginnering but how you miscalculated in creating this glide... woh... expecting from you to win next year competion..... do great.... 🖒
Could you not make test flugtags and try them pre event?
In a perfect world, yes! We usually only have about a week to complete them so that puts a real time crunch on it.
DJ Broake can there be a flugtag at flite fest east 2018?
From Pittsburgh wish i knew you guys were here i would of came to say hey
What's the music by the end?
When they have it again, I hope you all try again.
Just make something as light and as big as possible. This idea was great but was too heavy to be pushed fast enough.
Just make a big delta. Maximum area for minimum weight for slowest flight.
This is why I subscribed to this channel...
Congrats! That looked awesome.. Did you guys not check your C.R.A.P.??? LOL
Did you guys safe the tail?
Oh, my god! Were they allowed fly sooo far???
Congrats boys , awesome job on the plane .
Nice job on a quick build. Surprised you didn't get the CG right to begin with.
Ha we had the CG right, just not WITH ME ON IT! haha ;) -Stefan
FliteTest I suppose those things are bound to happen. Did I understand correctly that this was a six hour build?
Absolutely beautiful and inspirational
Does anybody know what the intro song is?
I'm surprised and disappointed. I fully thought you had this, rule #1 CG. You all know this !
Awwww, I was expecting more from you guys. Hey, there is a next time & I will be waiting.
I bet when Josh walked over at 2:25 all he heard was "cancer, which is pretty awesome"
Joe Matthews
They launch the "plane" at 6:40 you're welcome in advance
Thank you
Is this a copy of the Japanese Birdman Contest?
Winglets would have put you over..superb effort!!!
Mesquite, tx?
Could there be more than one? Way to go regardless.
In thought that too. It would stink cause that would mean they were in the area!
Air-headed Aviator they've been in the area, they shot an episode at Samuel Park across the highway from Samuel Farms.
Andrew G It makes me jealous, I went to Mesquite schools and of course Flitetest didn't exist at the time. Mesquite, Gilbert, AZ. I was part of the team there
whats the song that starts at 5:34?
So cool! Good job flight test!
Can't wait to watch, I love the flugtag
bigger push is all... very nice build though... well done
u guys r funny as ever n thanks for making me laugh in the morning
I liked before I even watched the vid.
Tanks :)
I like flight test because they actually reply to comments
WE TRY! ha ;)
i absolutely wish i had know about you guys when this happened. i would have come down and said hi! i live just north of the city
Great job guys!
Just loved it!!!! ❤️ Cheers FT team!
Too bad theres no way to see the center of gravity and center of lift like in kerbal space program
Pretty much the most important data when building a plane
Exodarion good game
Hahaha Related!
There is a way to "see" it. Just take the pilot and balance the plane of a plank
You could always enter it in a cad program to get a better estimation
Measurements, weight and math.
Awesome!!! Sad that Andres is gone for now hope he will come back soon! I also need to start a new study next week 😅 a bit scared tho
