Nice video! May I suggest you run your jacklines down the centre of the boat and that you both have 2 tethers so you can get around any rigging while remaining clipped on. Your tethers should be short enough so you can't possibly fall over the lifelines.

The hard bits of sailing make the good bits twice as nice. Safty harnesses with 2 hooks on different length of teathers may reduce the risk of your concerns being dragged next to the boat. Have seen other you tubers using them and makes moving around safer. Just a thought.
Nice video. Your time on stage has prepared you well for being a vlogger. Just not on your new home and not on the open ocean and not in a rough sea state.🤷♂️ In the beginning the learning curve is steep, (daunting comes to mind) but experience is a great teacher.😉 Assuming you live through it and don't give up.😁 I watched, I enjoyed, I Liked and I cringed a bit at all of the little details that you have looked at as you've gone about your daily lives onboard and not seen the potential that can be in different situations.😂 I'm looking forward to seeing you learn. Kristina I can see why your husband / skipper is an airline pilot, a very competent person. I could be wrong but you gave the impression that you don’t steer or drive the boat. I would think both people being able to sail the yacht as vital to your overall safety. Nice video 👍
Thanks so much for the love Andrew. You're right, for this leg John was at the helm for a lot of it because it was rough, pitch black at night, cold and rainy, with auto pilot issues, so I think John was just trying to spare me the discomfort! But I did a lot of day shifts, maybe I should have documented this more haha. But to be honest, in hindsight, the boat was so new to both of us. It's actually hard to believe, this was the first time we had sailed it together by ourselves! But now that we've had some practice over the past 5 weeks, I've been getting a lot of miles under my belt ☺️ Can't wait to show you what we've been up to up the east coast!
I have also been to Sydney and Perth. It's a wonderful place I can only think of your videos will be there for many memories of of beautiful places you've been. I watch some other sailing channels and sometimes they’ve done a six day passage or whatever and we see lots nice views and sailing and stuff but it seems like they haven’t eaten for six days. 😂 So I really enjoyed you sharing a couple of meals with your viewers - it made it seem even more real and adds to the feel of your journey.
Remember the man overboard drills from your 'duck days and you'll be just fine. It's a bit different in 28 knots and open seas compared to the calm Broadwater. Another aesome vid, always look forward to your uploads 😁

Hi Guys, great video but why did you not stop at dot of the lovely places in Bass Strait ? How’s the fishing going and you said something about sailing that is is how you guys know how to sail and what is your back ground in sailing, only asking because you mentioned it.
Heya! There was a strong low in front of us, and another behind us (check out episode 7) so we had a tiny little weather window. We could have stopped somewhere and waited until it passed, but then, we could have been stuck for another week or two there as it’s winter at the moment. We also wanted to race up to the state of Queensland for their dry season - the weather is perfect there this time of year. But, we will only get to spent 3-4 months up there before cyclone season commences from November (we’re not covered by insurance during cyclone season) so we really wanted to get up north as soon as possible. And then.... of course... you have covid. And Victoria and New South Wales had cases, so we wanted to also go to Queensland for this reason! So many things to consider

I know its early days for you yet. But I must comment on the fact that I am hearing the engine running a lot on your boat. Can you explain why you are using the engine so much? After all you are on a Sail Boat. When you are on a passage and you split the shifts. Do you share the cooking and do you stick to a normal routine of mealtimes or just adjust to the shift change over times? Can you try and contain Ship to shore radio transmissions, so we can all learn different ways of communicating, Also show us more Chartwork and passage tracks so we know where you are while you are filming. Essentially the first part of the trip (Melbourne - Sydney) was a delivery for us. We had to take this small weather window as it’s winter and we didn’t always have the right winds through the Bass Strait. We had to take what we could get because their were also covid cases in Victoria and we didn’t want to leave Tucana in Melbourne where should could get stuck indefinitely. We are doing plenty of sailing now. We hate using the engine!! We actually did a 14 nm sail the other day that took us 5 hours because we were determined not to motor!! Haha 😂
Ok, absolutely, we’ll make an effort to add more ship to shore radio transmissions! 😊 and re: food, we just sort of ate when we were hungry. I chose to do all the cooking and provisioning 🧑🍳 and John did all the boat work for this trip as it’s all so new to it all and learning along the way. Thanks for all your tips and feedback, this really helps us, as we’re new to this whole experience! Cheers

@@bobfitz6358 hey Bob, a little piece of me dies every time I turn the key. It amazes me as new “cruisers” the winds just aren’t favorable and you end up motoring. Now that we’ve got the tricky part of the trip out of the way we are able to wait for favorable winds and take all day to get somewhere, it’s kind of nice having your schedule dictated by Mother Nature and going with the flow for a change. It’s no good if you’re on a schedule though 😜
OH MY. 100% John talks about this everyday. We got a quote... $7,500 ... just the covers (new bimini, dodger and infill). This doesn't include new stainless. Might need to make a few more YT videos before we can afford that! haha
Yes. The first day or two are usually pretty tough for me. It sounds weird but I just want to eat and sleep. Haha. But by day three I am super woman hahaha! I'm sure I've just jinxed myself now for our next crossing, no doubt I'll be a mess. Haha!
Sometimes I wonder how many would be sailors actually understand how difficult a Man Overboard situation can be. I think everyone should start this nightmare scenario by experience the difficulty of dragging a limp person that's heavier than you 10 feet across the floor or better yet a flight of ten steps. Now, imagine dealing with someone who could potentially be passed out in the water, add in a slightly rough sea and you alone maneuvering a boat, and prepare to haul this person five feet up from the water to the deck of the boat. There are videos on this subject and frankly to this 6 foot 185 pound male armchair sailor it looks insanely difficult.
So $40K in upgrades and you don't have davits, solar panels, wind generator or shade? You will fry in that huge open cockpit in the tropics.. A bit like a school girl's diary so far. Sorry.!
New rigging, anti-foul, 4x solar panels, life raft, a new dingy, outboard, freezer re-gas, backing plates for stanchions, hot water system, bilge pump, water pump, new steering cables, prop speed, anodes, chain counter, sail service, new deck fittings, new halyard, engine service, coolant pump and 4x new AGM batteries... the list goes on. These safety items aren’t cheap my friend.
Ting tong, we did get solar, enough that we don’t need a wind generator luckily. The new covers are on the wish list, but it’s still winter and temp is only in the mid 20’s at the moment. We’ve got a few quotes but everyone is booked out for at least 6 weeks so we put it on the back burner so we could get going. Davits are nice but we’ve not figured out if we want them yet as the Deck saloon version (our boat) has a raised cockpit so an arch/davits ends up looking a bit silly if not designed well as it needs to be raised up a fair way to clear the back of the boat. Plus it would have been more time in the yard.. maybe we will get this done down the track. Sailing is expensive!
You’re right - he was pretty amazing! But I definitely spent a lot of hours behind the helm too ☺️😃 He was just being cautious at the start with the autopilot issues and then a gentleman at the end ❤️
Got to say ... not a fan of John - it all comes across as your dream, not his.... but he endures to enjoy the idea of youtube cash (arrogant is another word that comes to mind) I will leave it there and wish you both well. It also it sounds like a narrated channel 9 documentary. Until you both just become real to us that watch you won't break the bank.

The Autopilot takes a lot of juice from the batteries so usually the only time I'll engage autopilot is when the engine is on, to keep 'em charged up.
Also the production of this video is AMAZING! So well filmed and edited even though you’re so busy trying to just stand up straight!

I know its early days for you yet. But I must comment on the fact that I am hearing the engine running a lot on your boat. Can you explain why you are using the engine so much? After all you are on a Sail Boat.
When you are on a passage and you split the shifts. Do you share the cooking and do you stick to a normal routine of mealtimes or just adjust to the shift change over times?
Can you try and contain Ship to shore radio transmissions, so we can all learn different ways of communicating, Also show us more Chartwork and passage tracks so we know where you are while you are filming. Thanks, very interesting so far for you both and for us watching. Bob In the Philippines.
Essentially the first part of the trip (Melbourne - Sydney) was a delivery for us. We had to take this small weather window as it’s winter and we didn’t always have the right winds through the Bass Strait. We had to take what we could get because their were also covid cases in Victoria and we didn’t want to leave Tucana in Melbourne where should could get stuck indefinitely. We are doing plenty of sailing now. We hate using the engine!! We actually did a 14 nm sail the other day that took us 5 hours because we were determined not to motor!! Haha 😂
Ok, absolutely, we’ll make an effort to add more ship to shore radio transmissions! 😊 and re: food, we just sort of ate when we were hungry. I chose to do all the cooking and provisioning 🧑🍳 and John did all the boat work for this trip as it’s all so new to it all and learning along the way. @@bobfitz6358 hey Bob, a little piece of me dies every time I turn the key. It amazes me as new “cruisers” the winds just aren’t favorable and you end up motoring. Now that we’ve got the tricky part of the trip out of the way we are able to wait for favorable winds and take all day to get somewhere, it’s kind of nice having your schedule dictated by Mother Nature and going with the flow for a change. It’s no good if you’re on a schedule though 😜
Looks like you definitely need an infill between the dodger and Bimini, good for keeping warm and dry and keeping the tropical sun off.
OH MY. 100% John talks about this everyday. We got a quote... $7,500 ... just the covers (new bimini, dodger and infill). This doesn't include new stainless. Might need to make a few more YT videos before we can afford that! haha
do you ever feel sea sick when it gets rougher?
Yes. The first day or two are usually pretty tough for me. It sounds weird but I just want to eat and sleep. Haha. But by day three I am super woman hahaha! I'm sure I've just jinxed myself now for our next crossing, no doubt I'll be a mess. Haha!

Sometimes I wonder how many would be sailors actually understand how difficult a Man Overboard situation can be. I think everyone should start this nightmare scenario by experience the difficulty of dragging a limp person that's heavier than you 10 feet across the floor or better yet a flight of ten steps. Now, imagine dealing with someone who could potentially be passed out in the water, add in a slightly rough sea and you alone maneuvering a boat, and prepare to haul this person five feet up from the water to the deck of the boat. There are videos on this subject and frankly to this 6 foot 185 pound male armchair sailor it looks insanely difficult.

So $40K in upgrades and you don't have davits, solar panels, wind generator or shade? You will fry in that huge open cockpit in the tropics.. A bit like a school girl's diary so far. Sorry.!
New rigging, anti-foul, 4x solar panels, life raft, a new dingy, outboard, freezer re-gas, backing plates for stanchions, hot water system, bilge pump, water pump, new steering cables, prop speed, anodes, chain counter, sail service, new deck fittings, new halyard, engine service, coolant pump and 4x new AGM batteries... the list goes on. These safety items aren’t cheap my friend.
Ting tong, we did get solar, enough that we don’t need a wind generator luckily. The new covers are on the wish list, but it’s still winter and temp is only in the mid 20’s at the moment. We’ve got a few quotes but everyone is booked out for at least 6 weeks so we put it on the back burner so we could get going. Davits are nice but we’ve not figured out if we want them yet as the Deck saloon version (our boat) has a raised cockpit so an arch/davits ends up looking a bit silly if not designed well as it needs to be raised up a fair way to clear the back of the boat. Plus it would have been more time in the yard.. maybe we will get this done down the track. Sailing is expensive!
