    I will once again be flying in the Give Hope Wings fundraiser this year! Our June of 2024 flight will see us stop in many communities in Eastern Canada to raise awareness for this worthy cause.
    Last year 2023 we raised over $27,000 towards helping our neighbours - we made a positive difference in the lives of many.
    Here's the link to the 2024 fundraiser page: support.hopeair.ca/ghw2024/glens-hangar

      You should check out the RUclips channel ‘Tom Air’ - he’s a pilot local to me, who had an engine out forced landing a couple of winters ago in the North. Landed on a frozen lake and SAR came to the rescue, dropping techs and supplies in the dark from a C-130. The videos are a great show of what those squadrons do to keep us all safe.

      @raymondmiller4981 6 месяцев назад +1

      Softened butter added as soon as the bread is removed from the heat is the best. Spread it around until the butter is no longer standing and has been completely absorbed into the toast. Yum. Nothing worse than cold butter chunked onto cooled toast. Not even worth eating it at that point.

    It seems that airplane camping may have a lot in common with ultralight backpack camping. Aficionados of that style of camping are obsessed with weight and size, and will often spend hundreds of dollars to eliminate grams from their packs. Titanium, carbon fiber, and other materials are their bread and butter.

    • @GlensHangar
      @GlensHangar  6 месяцев назад +6

      Weight is a huge issue, not so much for these shorter trips close to airports with fuel; but later in the summer when we try to fly to the Arctic Ocean we’ll need to carry extra fuel in cans. Which will make it important to minimise the weight of the camp gear.

    • @RichWellner
      @RichWellner 6 месяцев назад +2

      When I airplane camp my tent alone weighs 70lbs. I think it's probably more comparable to car camping than backpacking. My wife section hikes the Appalachian trail and her total pack weight is less than my cot.

    • @GlensHangar
      @GlensHangar  6 месяцев назад

      @@RichWellner I'd love to take a bell tent along like the one you have Rich! Most of our camping this summer will be like car camping and that tent would be amazing. The longer more remote trips we're planning are to areas where there are 'airports' but 100LL isn't available or only available from metal drums... (maybe, if it isn't all used earlier in the season). So we'll have aux fuel in the cabin taking up useful load.

    Hearing 424 Squadron on the radio brought back fond memories of my time flying the HC-130H with the 303 ARRS (Air Force Reserve) in the early 70’s. We participated in a friendly week long airdrop completion with them at CFB-Trenton along with a USAF active duty squadron. At the time they were flying the C-8 Buffalo and came over the DZ 40 to 50 knots slower then we could manage in the Herc. They finished first (I chalk it up to home field advantage) but we were second way ahead of the USAF active duty crew. I am now a long retired armchair pilot and have really enjoyed following your chronicle on getting back in to flying, keep up the great work. (I also follow G&F, love the old cookbook show, reminds me of the depression era recipes my mom and grandmother made in the early 50’s - if I can re create it I will send you their “depression rice” recipe)

    It must be fun to take advantage of your STOL mods and lift off the runway when you're not even half-way along. I'm guessing that the vast majority of airports have runways that are plenty long enough for you, but are you aware of any (more remote?) places that would still be a "tight squeeze"?

    • @GlensHangar
      @GlensHangar  6 месяцев назад +2

      We’ll be visiting a few shorter runways this summer that will be challenging because of length and condition. The real challenge this summer will be in the Far North where the runways are mostly gravel. Some will be plenty long (they are serviced by 737-200 with gravel kits), but no matter how long you want to get off the gravel as soon as possible.

    Nice video as usual!!! You considered a rescue parachute like the Cirrus have??? MVU looks great can see youve been polishing!!! Are you allowed to use those long lasting ceramic waxes that supposedly last a whole year on a car on a plane???

    • @GlensHangar
      @GlensHangar  6 месяцев назад

      The chute for this model of 172 isn’t (or wasn’t when I asked) available, so constant emergency training is the answer.
      I tried the ceramic coating, but it didn’t last more than a couple of months and then started to look worse than not polishing. It didn’t seem to stick very well to the bare metal, and the exhaust ate it away as well. Sounded like a great idea; just didn’t work for me.

    Am i wrong? But when you climb to 8500 feet instead of 4500 or 6000 feet you can cross quicker? Something to do with the circumference of the earth? No?

    • @darrylday30
      @darrylday30 Месяц назад

      Light aircraft usually cruise a little bit faster at higher altitude due to decreased air density. The circumference of the earth isn’t a factor.

    17 MPG, 116 MPH = 100.8 Knots. You had to change tanks, did you refuel? Great video!

    • @GlensHangar
      @GlensHangar  6 месяцев назад +6

      I did re-fuel at Gore Bay, pretty reasonable price for the location. Switching fuel tanks on this plane is because of an AD related to a fault in the fuel system that rears its head at altitudes above 5,000 feet. The fix was to switch tanks every 30 minutes. Newer Cessna 172’s have a re-designed fuel system so you don’t have to switch tanks; you can run them on ‘both’ all the time.
