Just watched the whole thing on DVD. The women’s costumes, except Cinderella’s and her deceased Mother’s, are terrible. The highlights of this production are the opening and concluding heart-wrenchingly romantic scenes with Cinderella’s Father and Mother (doubled by the ballerina playing the Fairy), their passionate scenes being well matched with those for Cinderella and the Prince. But the mismatch between the mostly elegant choreography and the crude women’s costumes is annoying. Shame that contemporary directors really believe that in order to be ‘controversial’ one must be vulgar.
C'est si triste de voir de si bons danseurs sur une somptueuse musique servir de pâture à cette négation du beau et du bon qu'est devenu "l'art" contemporain.
Some truly "knock out" women in this company and Jean Christophe Mallot certainly knows how to show them all off to maximum effect.
