The gila monster lizard is very slow and for them to envenom mate you they need to chew on you a little bit and the venom will just make you sick but not kill you now the western diamondback rattlesnake will kill you and you guys being out on those trails you would probably have to get life flighted with a helicopter to a hospital with antivenin
Absolutely epic. Most RUclipsrs would have made a 4 part series out of this. The scale of your videos is constantly expanding. Really beautiful work Shaun.
Your story just highlights what a tight community belongs to 4x4ing. Awesome to discover new friends all over the West who can help you when you're down. I hope the Trail Destroyer is healthy now. Love your film work.
I'm not an overland kinda guy, but I love the concept. This channel came out of nowhere the other day and I watched the Mackenzie Trail episode and now this one. Some fantastic content. Hope the hurt wasn't too painful on the bank account for the trans issue. Cheers.
Arizona born and raised. This state has a lot to offer to off road so hopefully ya can make it back and enjoy it without any hiccups! Another stellar video!
I know you said you're taking a break and it is well deserved sir, but I must say, you've seen parts if the USA that 99% of this country could only dream to see. Thank you for bringing this to your audience in the glorious cinematic fashion you have. I've said it before, but the Discovery Channel should pick you up as a weekly show. They already have so much content to work with! Look forward to seeing what you've got after the well deserved break sir!
i felt the moment when the other guy left you alone in the middle of the dessert for rest of the journey yes i see a man a husband a caring father and alone man who is working hard i was latterly crying when watching drone shots while you driving alone in that dessert for your work for your family, i hope you get millions of subscribers thank you for being there respect 😔 from the east side of the world
Honestly, the fact that you have modified and wheeled the crap out of Trail Destroyer with little to no issues whatsoever is a miracle. I guess luck had to run out at some point. Unfortunate that it all happened at once though lol. Loved the video
Shawn, your cinematography is so on point. Great job! Lately I’ve been saving your videos to watch them on my projector. I literally feel like I’m there.
Have to say, it's hard not to feel cursed after all that. Great on the community helping you out, and to White Rock Dodge for hooking you up with that truck and trailer.
Seems like that was a hell of a trip. It's awesome to see others step up and offer a helping hand when a fellow offroader is in a pickle. You definitely came out of it with one heck of a story to tell!
Just wrapped up a trip like this myself. Fortunately, no trucks failed or were broken but just about everything else went wrong. Not every trip is sunshine and rainbows, but they do make for some great stories. Thanks for sharing Shaun
Really cool video! Never fun having catastrophic issues, but goes to show the 4x4 community is incredible. Would love to get some new merch and help support the channel further!
What a trip! Shows how it goes in real life. Been in many situation like this and I know that feeling too well 😂. But as always you really pushed it to extremes. So cool how it all worked out and the commmunity support.
As much as you do with that truck something is bound to happen. 😮 Never fun though. All in all this trip was a beautiful drive in the desert , not a disaster at all!!
Wow, what an experience that must have been. I've got to hand it to Rob for demonstrating exactly how this community operates when something goes wrong. His family adapted to help in this situation, which I'm sure must have been difficult while traveling with a small child. Shaun, nicely done troubleshooting and problem solving both significant breakdowns. I was pretty shocked that in a couple of days, the trail destroyer was on its way to the next event. I'm sure by now you've got a resolution on the transmission issue. I'm looking forward to seeing the next video with that information. I'm sure EPIC will want to take a close look at the truck and AMW will likely want to get some feedback as well. Sincerely, what a flippin' awesome video.
Damn, sorry to hear the troubles. Have seen a lot of engine swapped Jeeps having issues, the cooling just isn’t there in the heat of the southwest US. Hope it all gets fixed and you can get back out there!
O Shaun, the first time we took our truck camper from Melbourne, Victoria to Brisbane, Queensland we had major problems. We could not understand why the truck kept on wanting to lift. It turned out truck did not have the right springs for the weight of the truck camper. We had to buy a brand new truck and get all the upgrades done. I was so pissed off at the time, but it did not stop our overlanding adventures around Australia, just money. Love Rolanda
I WORKED A NIGHT SHIFT. DRANK EXTRA STRENGTH MONSTER last night. Can’t sleep. I’m living in Phoenix right now. I did live in Flagstaff AZ for a year. I know where Prescott is. IM GLAD YOU KEPT FILMING! And even went on by yourself! I hope the baby was ok! LOVE ALL YOUR ADVENTURES. But I especially enjoyed this video, as well! Thank you!
Note to those traveling off road in AZ desert,... Things are closer then they look from mountain tops. What looks like two hours drive is really 4 to 5 hours. Bring PLENTY of water!!!
Every challenge creates opportunity. This would be a great time to highlight in detail the gear and tools and resources you tapped to keep going and make it home. Recovery, diagnostics, comms, networking…you name it…sounds like it all played a role in getting you out of multiple jams this trip. Thanks for the video, Shaun…you have an amazing channel.
Also…sad we didn’t get to see more of the Roosevelt Lake area through your lens (as I’m sure you are too!) We did a camping trip in that area last year. Beautiful, big country.
So the good news is you didn’t breakdown either time deep in the backcountry and no one got hurt, dang those paved roads lol, my Tacoma is currently awaiting a new motor, waiting sucks, I can’t wait to get back out exploring again, God bless and keep on wheelin
I watched it early on Patreon and it was an awesome video. I’m gonna watch it again at the Premier. You know it’s good when you can watch it twice in two days.
Those guys at Summit 4x4 are the best, they replaced my rear drive shaft the day after Expo, in and out in 2 hours. had a custom shaft hanging on the wall so got a little lucky too. glad they got you taken care of.
It wasn't a disaster. A trip that doesn't go as planned isn't comfortable, but that's what makes it an adventure. Beware moving to low lands (by the river) to avoid a desert storm. A flash flood can come without warning.
I was born in Arizona and you caught view of probably the rarest animal in the state. I’ve personally only seen one in the wild in many years of living in the desert.
Hey! I’ve had my smaller 2005 4X4 jeep Liberty I took off road in northern utah. The vehicle didn’t die till I arrived home to Phoenix. Engine filled with oil. 2 blocks from my home. After driving 750 miles back from Utah. HEY DO YOU THINK THE HEAT REEKS HAVOCK ON VEHICLES? 115 degrees I. Phoenix upon my return, Played into your engine problems??? What do you think?
Guys. You saw a Gila monster for sure. And yes venomous and a bite like a pit pull. The coolest thing is most people who live in AZ there whole life never see one. In 20 years, I have been honored to see two.
so the u-joint broke and it cracked the cover of the transfer case? then the transmission went out? that's a nightmare, but it could have been worse, for instance you could have rolled it, which is what happened to me in a truck in baja back in the late '70's... please keep us posted on the details of the repair, and also how the baby is doing.
awesome video Shaun, your surrounded by not just ,great people willing to help out when your 2500 miles from home and you can't beat that and the staff at Summit 4x4 were outstanding, the 4x4 community is awesome, like a close knit family in its own way, and as usual the views were other worldly and the colours in that area were off the scale, cameras of all types are getting better every year, you'll have the trail destroyer back up and running before you know it, i am just surprised that stock Rubicon transfer case didn't blow up in you long ago, since you have double the horsepower and torque 👍
That tower is the backup system for the emergency broadcast system after the power grid failed. Original system, those had new looking locks on the chains. Worked at cell towers some years ago.
Great video and i am an az local explorer and was literally thinking about that shop mid video because they helped me out when my quadralift was leaking out on the trail! Great dudes out there and im glad yall stayed safe! Sorry to see all the trouble you had on this trip Shawn. I'm surprised the trans and T case lasted so long with all the power going through them and what the Trail Destroyer has gone through. Still a fantastic video! Stay safe!
I’m from NY but absolutely love the southwest. Arizona being my favorite. Some of the landscapes are stunningly amazing! I’m heading to Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico after thanksgiving to do more exploring. Thank you for all your adventures, they provide us with more places to check out!

I love the Trail Destroyer as a build concept. Unfortunately, not being able to drive 300 miles without 15 extra gallons of fuel + a platform that was not actually designed for the amount of torque and horsepower consistantly delivered... keeps it just a really cool concept. Almost like a SEMA build, where the vehicles would break if you actually tried to drive them. Let's just say that there will be plenty of the "I broke the Trail Destroyer... Again" type videos....
Sorry for the trouble you had to endure, but it was a pretty entertaining RUclips video. :) And you were in my neck of the woods, I live in Caldwell Idaho, very near Boise. Thanks for all the hard work you put into entertaining us, your videos are top notch and so fun to watch.
Whoa, that beer dispenser? AWESOME! Glad you made it home okay... :) Hope that poor little baby didn't get rabies, and those views toward the end... Wow!!!
Oh my gosh…. Seems like a nightmare. I really want to get an exploring / off roading rig and I’m curious if you thought about other brands than Jeep. I just hear nightmares about transmissions, electrical, engines just failing on newer rigs. Can you share a bit about why you went with a Gladiator over something like a Tacoma. I’ve really thought about those two models to really consider this year. Thanks and amazing video!!!
Rob and wife were right to bail out and get the baby checked out after the mouse attack - believe it or hot there is still Bubonic Plague in Arizona, and it is almost always found up north and is transmitted by mice and rats. I hope he's okay! And seeing a gila monster is pretty rare, but they ARE DANGEROUS.
Pretty jealous that you saw a Gila Monster in a day, as I've been here 6 years and still waiting. Glad to see you made it to the home state - figures you'd be thrown every possible curveball. Hopefully will catch you at the next Expo West!
I love this video a lot so far, because the performers drive throughout dirty and tundra roads daylight and night, plus the shots are from all sides by drones,, the video appears almost everything and anything,, in addition the pickups look awesome,, this video is cool 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Welcome to Arizona! Yes, cacti are all over the place, and so are very venomous animals. Perhaps bring a local on the next trip? One of the tactics I am using to keep repairs to a minim is keeping the weight of my modifications and cargo to a minimum. I know we can't hope to avoid all trail damage, but I'm hoping that by keeping it light it will minimize the danger. Seeing great experiences like these videos give good things to think about.
Not to poor salt on a wound, but if you look back in your comments when you built this, I made mention of spending the extra on an Atlas transfer case. you've got a lot of heavy duty components which are putting a lot of torque on parts. Sorry it crashed your trip.

Been watching for about a year and a half at this point. Glued to this channel Monday mornings. Be aware, you’ll get addicted. Lol.

Crazy story, one for the books! I love AZ❤ I’ve had the fortune to follow the first trail you were on. Very scenic! Love the videos!
You caught the desert at a good time. We've had lots of rain out here the last year.
Also side shout out to the Summit 4x4 team. They're definitely some of the "good guys" here in the desert.
Hopefully there are transmission upgrades to hold the HP and load. The drive shaft needs greased occasionally else will bust T case.
The Story Till Now is always good! We Get Things Done would suit just as well! Keep well, best wishes from England as always! 👍☺
Love your content, so well put together. Stunning landscape! Anyone else notice what appears to be a person on the hillside at 39:42? Freaked me out!
Like he wants to come back here after the breakdown trip lol. Everything else looked awesome.
The first trail looked like Four Peaks.
Love the longer videos. Such a good channel. 🤘🏼
Not to poor salt on a wound, but if you look back in your comments when you built this, I made mention of spending the extra on an Atlas transfer case. you've got a lot of heavy duty components which are putting a lot of torque on parts. Sorry it crashed your trip.
AZ native like others here, seeing you guys chase lizards and poke holes made me chuckle.
Man brother, glad you have friends along the way. Well, when you’re Overlanding in SC I got you covered 😂
