Why do they fire the hardworking employees and not the lazy employees? |

Your explanation is correct, not all companies are like that. A hardworking employee has future and growth in life whereas lazy employees cannot survive in the industry once they are fired or leave the organization for some reason.

No manager can't defend them long, Managers also wants hardworking people, because they want output hence pressure on managers also will get reduce. Manage has to report updates to his high level managers. Stake holders.
Time pass folks won't stay long.
