  • Ever wonder how some buildings stay upright during an earthquake? Here's a look at how some structures are built or retrofitted to withstand the violent shaking. Pioneer Courthouse in downtown Portland, for example, uses a “base isolation system.” In the event of an earthquake the building will sway gently back and forth, kind of like a pendulum.

    What about the several hundred legacy non-reinforced brick buildings around Downtown Portland that could result in $50 Billion or more in damages? Is investing several billion dollars to retrofit them with earthquake survival devices being looked into?
