Here is what heard from my chosen sister's tribe (Native American). If the person in the cultural "dress" is respectful of it, the "culture" is offering and the experience can spread joy, knowledge and awareness it should not be considered appropriation. It's when it becomes a Halloween costume, a joke or used to convey hate is when it's awful. BUT people can generally be awful. How wonderful that the shop took the time to understand hair types for their clients and offer service to everyone. 💓 Have SOMUCHFUN!!!!
Exactly Otherwise it shouldn't matter . Consider the fact countries all over the world . Literally living of our black American culture. Daily , Hair , clothes the music and the dance . And when we tried to tell them how , yes or not to do it on or teach them the right way. They get upset. And trying to flipped the script on us. It's crazy others racist towards us Black people. Yet those people literally living of our culture. That we created for us . Because nobody wants us to be involved. Especially when some of us were mixed. Or raised in that culture. We told multiple what we're not just because we're black. Lol go figure.
You all looked so beautiful in the kimonos!! Japanese people understand the difference between appropriation and appreciation which makes those kinds of experiences enjoyable. You and your family have good hearts so don't feel bad for trying it. Love you girl
Sundaaaiiii. I'm real life crying right now seeing you, your family, & friends being black in kimonos. It speaks to my nerdy black girl dreams that we can wear & experience things like this. Thank you so much for sharing your life & love of Japan with us.
I wore kimono to my high school prom! (Sooo long ago). My boyfriend was Japanese and his mother took me to the salon to be dressed. Great memories. All y'all very kawaii!
Aww the guy at 17:56 next to the Japanese lady in the yellow shirt was so enthusiastic to see you all gliding by in kimono! The wave of acknowledgement and her smile was so kind. You can tell the Japanese loved seeing you all positively wearing their traditional dress. Its not an every day occurrence in Japan so I would definitely break my neck to stare/wave/smile at a group of black women in kimono in Japan lol. Glad you all were out there politely representing for the culture. This was fun to watch.
I had same experience. I had work over time to go to Japan and I wanted to wear a the Graduation kimono called Hakama because I had graduated the year before from University. The girl even braided my wig so it would match the hairstyle that goes with it and literally everyone was "wow" or "nice". Japanese are okay with you wearing the kimono as long as you wear it respectfully or with intention plus I even had a Japanese lady help fix my kimono. I have a Yukata and every time I wear people think I got it imported from Japan but I bought from a Japanese shop owner hear in Little Tokyo. Kimonos are kind of like cultural exchange and renting/buying them keeps it from dying out which was huge problem sense not a lot younger generation wear them. Majority of people who wear them are foreigners surprisingly. Anyways, Sundai you need to go when your back California next year to Anime Expo at least once with your sisters.
Come on Sundai you doing tha dang thang sis. I’m going to keep saying this. I’m so proud of you ♥️ Girl me and the family just left Japan. My kids grew up there and now we living in Bahrain. And it’s definitely different but it our new home.
I love the vibes between you all in this video. You all looked so beautiful in kimono. ❤ I saw another YTuber in Japan walking around in kimono to see what reactions she got. The Japanese people she encountered like that she was partaking in their tradition and complimented her (even older ladies). Stay blessed!
Ahhhhh !!! Everyone looked so gorgeous in their kimonos 👘🥹❤️🌸 Beautiful Princesses and Queens 👸🏽🥰✨!!! Thank you for sharing that moment with us ! 😍 I’m glad y’all had fun 😇
Asians in general are appreciative when you wear their cultural clothing or make an effort to try to understand their history better, mostly because they haven't been persecuted for it relentlessly in their home countries like say, Native Americans, so it's considered a compliment rather than appropriation. Not to mention you all looked absolutely stunning in the kimono, and the tour looked super fun, lots of great bucket list items like that rickshaw, woo!
You all look great in your kimonos. Kawaii. What a fun day for you all. It's great selecting a kimono/yukata. Mine is between the two as it's of a heavy silk-like fabric and heavier than a yukata type of fabric. I selected it in the summer of 2017 in Kyoto. I walked into Daimaru department store and the ladies wrapped me up. It was great although I didn't speak Japanese and they didn't speak English. After they were finished, not only did they clap, but other sales associates from other departments walked by and also loved the look. They commented, "Kawaii". I have worn it many times as I was also in Japan in 2018 and 2019. I have also worn it to some important occasions here at home. As for the footwear, I have to wear my own footwear as I wear a U.S. size 10.5-11/ euro size 41. I wish I had bought a clip-on bow, but I actually tie the bow myself. It takes time and a lot of patience. At my hotel, I would get up an hour early to start getting ready before going down to breakfast fully dressed. I didn't wear my kimono while walking around all day outside as it was too hot. I like to go to Japan and other parts of Asia during the hot months. But, I wore it inside a lot and loved wearing it. When I was in elementary school, back in the sixties, the Japanese mothers would wear actual kimonos (silk) to school events. My neighborhood was basically African American, Japanese, and White. We were exposed to Japanese culture, food, and Buddhist temple festivals at an early age. It was like living in two different worlds. I love different ethnic styles of clothing and have worn different styles from around the world for decades. I buy the different styles either while visiting the country or from different families who have done pop-up stores here in LA.for decades. I got my beautiful Bhutanese kira and toego a good 25 years ago here in L.A. from a Bhutanese family who would fly here annually with their traditional clothing and do a pop-up store. I also have plenty of West African batik clothing, bought both here and in Ghana and also some North African clothing bought both in Tunisia and Morocco in the early 80s. There is a lot of beautiful traditional clothing out there from around the world. Go to Nextshark dot com and type in, African Artist and Japanese Designer Create Stunning Kimonos by Mixing Cultures. This creation was done back in 2017. I started to have my regular dressmaker in Bangkok make me kimono-style wear out of African fabric, but instead I had her do cheongsam style dresses out of my Vlisco cotton African batik fabric. She's been sewing for me for two decades and knows what I like. Greetings from Los Angeles.
That Kimono style you picked was really beautiful. The red isn’t overwhelming. I think you picked it because of the Sakura flower design in the floral print. Sakura blossom is my favorite!
Hi Sundai! Wanted to let you know that you guys look amazing in kimono and please try it again. I’m Dutch and white, but I have 6 kimono ensembles that I regularly wear. They’re just so comfortable. I have asked the Japanese people in my area if what I did was okay because I was also afraid to offend people. Not a single Japanese person had something bad to say, and they were so happy that their kimono were worn again in a good way. I try to be mindful of the way they are worn and what style goes good with what, never ever will I wear one as a ‘costume’ because I love and respect the craftsmanship so much.
Gorgeous ladies and what fun! ❤🎋❤🎋❤ I’m Puerto Rican and my hubby is Japanese from Bay Area. He said you guys are good. Not appropriatin’ but “APPRECIATIN” . 😂😉🥰🙌🏽🫶🏽🙌🏽🫶🏽
Girl I'm glad you're having fun . Stop worry about what others think . Just because you're wearing a kimono. Consider the fact the whole world is basically living of our black culture. It shouldn't matter
Sundai don't feel bad! I had no baby book, no baby pictures nothing! My brother had all of that in abundance, So growing up-when he insisted I was adopted- I believed him WELL into my 20's🤣 i love the intro btw!
I was reading your comment about wearing a Kimono. In 2019, here in Atlanta, GA, my faith had its International Convention. Several brothers and sisters attended from all over the world. A true International. We had quite a few brothers and sisters attend from Japan and a lot of the sisters gave the American sisters their Kimonos. A friend of mine got one. I think they are so beautiful. I watched a documentary about them. Beautiful. Just beautiful.🙂
U all look absolutely gorgeous! And all the other you tubers I follow that are in Japan have worn kimonos to see the reactions and every time they were met with positivity and kindness.. and when asked how they feel about other people wearing them they say they actually like to see people wearing them and appreciate it.
I went to the cherry blossom garden they have at Osaka Castle when I came in March, it was warmer than normal I guess, so I got lucky and they bloomed early. Was absolutely beautiful and you can also get close to them for some amazing pictures, and smells Much love from Arizona 💜💜
Just when I thought the moving vlogs is my favorite series, you drop this gem! Thank you for sharing Sundai! You and your family are so beautiful and loving! New dream unlocked!
That kimono set you wore is sooo beautiful 🥺 I haven’t gotten the confidence to wear one here yet lol totally get how you feel about wearing one but every Japanese person I’ve met keeps encouraging me to try one on so I feel pressured 😂 I think they look at it a bit differently when a foreigner does it but definitely can see both sides to it.
This was by far my favorite of all! Your family was so respectful of the culture and you all looked amazing in your Kimonos! You did the Japanese proud! I just love your family!
You girls looked so damn pretty in those kimonos 🌸🌸 I've never done it before but definitely adding that to my list for the next time i'll visit ! Loving those vlogs 🧡

Phew... I am so glad to see I'm not the only mom to NOT complete the second one. My daughter's 33 and 31 STILL go back and forth about it. My oldest told my second that I found her and don't know nothing about her that's why its not complete 😂😂😂 I feel like Momma, just go get the damn book so I can be done!!!😂. Love it!!!! If I don't remember I'll make it up 😅

I think you're all wearing the kimono respectfully and included the socks/shoes plus you're all enjoying the culture. Japan has always been big on exporting their culture and even more so now with everyone into anime and all. My parents wanted to buy me this beautiful custom kimono from their artist friend and I've literally kicked myself for it for ages. I just felt I couldn't wear it anywhere and it was kind of an awkward thing.
I'm going to Japan next year (manifestation) and I would love to wear a kimono, however due to the many many things I won't do I'm reserving that for my next trip there. But you all looked so cute.
Douglas I'm scared of you 😮 I really enjoyed watching this video. A family affair enjoyment is always a great look. The experience of a different culture is wonderful 👍A precious moment. And a life time memory. Thanks for sharing ❤

I'd like to add that appropriation is claiming another culture's style as your own without giving credit to it's origins.
You all looked so beautiful in the kimonos!! Japanese people understand the difference between appropriation and appreciation which makes those kinds of experiences enjoyable. You and your family have good hearts so don't feel bad for trying it. Love you girl
