many are bound by an ethnocentric interpretation of gender, which in the west (influenced by the abrahamics) is often a bijection to a boolean categorization (dichotomous structure) qualified by human sexual reproductive role, assigned at birth. note theirs is quite reductionist and non-nullable (no third state), making assignment inconsistent for people whose reproductive role has been altered through actions like mutation (such as intersex populations).
most westerners we study will default to an ad populum based argument when defending their gender system. they often have a limited vocabulary and do not realize their colloquial definitions of sex and gender are defined differently under academic and technical contexts such as ethnography and medicine. they do not seem to understand "gender is a social construct" means their tribe/village/culture is allowed to construct 2 genders...

A very good point. Are there other cultures that provide an alternate, non-binary conception of gender?
