Seventeen is separated in 3 units (Hip Hop, Performance, Vocal), each with their own leader, but operate as 1 group. Cheers was written by the 3 leaders, Woozi (vocal leader and main producer), Hoshi (performance leader and main choreographer) and S.Coups (leader of the hip hop team and the group as a whole). It was produced by Woozi, Vernon (another Seventeen member) and 2 producers from Prismfilter studio which is Woozi's regular collaborator. The song looks back on their journey, referencing the "basement" they used to practice in, the 2 pyeong room (~70 square feet) they had to share as a group of 13, and all the condescending comments they received when they first debuted due to their group size "too many mouths to feed" "they all said we'd crash and burn". The song is a celebration of their success despite tough beginnings ("we build a building from our basement unit") and invites everyone to follow their lead and raise a glass with them.
"We build a building from our basement unit." - they were trainees for a long time, in the basement of pledis. Back in 2015, Pledis was in the verge of bankruptcy. Now the pledis CEO says SVT saved the company (this is even before hybe merger). "Too many mouths to feed I wondered." - one of the common insults back then. Knetz even asked what do they do for food, expecting them to never succeed and disband quickly "They all said we'd crash and burn. They dont know they dont know they dont know" - antis and knetz gave these comments when they just debuted because at that time they were too big and many predicted that they would fall. Their debut mv was so low-budget.. during one of their old "vlives" (not rlly, i dunno what app was that) they even interacted with a hater...... Oh and their supposed leader during trainee left them and went to acting, predicting their group is not going to be successful.... "Started from two, flanked by twelve guys. Dash on the highway highpass zone here on out"- pyeong means a square floor meter (?) He's the main general leader of sveneteen, scoups, and he's probably talking about the small basement they were in for 2 years pre debut, not knowing when they would debut... company has no budget, they had to self produce to debut. Create their own song, choreo, heck, even logo stickers and some merch design to promote themselves. So when they did debut, they never stopped. It's a running joke in svt that they make songs as if in a printer. That they create songs "like in airfryer." They comeback often and carats (the fandom) is always raining on contents.... "I dont know how high we'll rise." Woozi's part, he said he's already satisfied but since a lot of members are still thirsty, he's coming with them. "Dance like my butt pang pang." Yes. "Kiss my ass" probably. 😅 I gotta say for a diss track, this is kinder than their older diss tracks that they only performed live and never released.
