This came at just the perfect time for me ahahah! I’ve only started getting into doing covers and I’ve been recording them and just not uploading because I want them to be the best they can be before I actually put them out there, but i was wondering do you have any advice on getting yourself “out there” if you will as a person just starting out making and actually uploading covers and stuff?? I’d really love the advice!! Thanks so much for this video btw, I used to look at your old version of this religiously so I got so excited seeing this in my description box hahahah xxx
Awww girl I spent years doing that - recording and not uploading! Perfectionism is both a blessing and a curse! But I can honestly say uploading was the best thing I ever did, and once you’ve done it it’s like what was I so worried about? As for getting yourself out there it’s such a tough one, I was making videos for about a year before they started getting much of any attention. You’ve got to be persistent and not disheartened if it takes a while! I’ve still got sooooo far to go and I’ve been doing this ages now but I love it and that’s the most important thing. Whatever you do, don’t spam advertise yourself on other people’s channels because it’s just kinda annoying for creators who’ve build their channels up for other people to think it’s ok to fill your comments with self promo if that makes sense? Plus youtube will automatically mark your comments as spam and they’ll stop showing up on channels anyway and you don’t want that! It’s totally cool to see a cover you like and leave them a personalised comment of what you enjoyed and how much you’d appreciate a bit of feedback from them, but not just a copied and pasted thing to every channel! That way you can kinda build friendships and connections with RUclipsrs on a similar journey to you and you can support each other and help each other grow, collab etc! Try and keep up to date on current songs too & hashtagging on instagram is a great way to promote yourself too 💚 thanks so much for your support and I hope that helps you out x
Shelley Mill thank you so much for taking the time to write that! And yes I’ve noticed before creators get annoyed by spam comments, I can honestly understand why, taking the time to create something and put your heart into it for someone to just try to use it to their advantage can be so disheartening! Thanks so much again, lots of love xxx
This was SO helpful! Thanks for taking the time to make this and share your know-how with RUclips. Your video makes getting started feel so much less scary
I have a few questions. Do you _need_ a microphone to edit and sing? Do you think it is necessary? I also love the idea of starting a singing channel but I’m not ready to show my face to the world. Any tips? I’m still also quite confused about how to use the editing programs. Thank you for this video as it helped so much! I would love it if you answered some of my questions.
No as mentioned you don’t NEED a microphone, it just makes the quality a whole lot better! It’s definitely harder to get views and stuff if you don’t show your face because I feel like people like to put a face to the performance if that makes sense! Just film when you’re at your most confident, wearing your fave outfit, on a good hair day etc and you’ll naturally feel more open to putting yourself out there. As for the editing programs, it’s definitely a lot of trial and error and just getting used to it, but I can’t explain or demonstrate any better than I did here as everything is explained!💚 glad I could help you💚
Tia Chocolate what is your ideal end goal? If you can’t show your face it can only really go so far as people do start to connect with you as a person, your style, your humour and little personal qwerks that can’t show without posting your face if that makes sense! If you’re just doing it for fun and aren’t too bothered about views then you could always just post with an image throughout the whole video, but like I said it can only really get you so far. As long as you keep your personal identity private (so keep where you live, your place of work/education private as well as your personal social media platforms) showing your face in my opinion isn’t dangerous. But I totally respect what your parents say if you’re young! Maybe speak to them and explain? If it’s something you’re really passionate about they might rethink! Hope that helps 💚
Omg this helped a lot I've just started my channel and didn't know much on how to record and what to use to make my covers even better thanks xx hopefully soon I will be uploading x

Do you think you would ever do a video on how you use garage band? I want to start a channel as well, but garage band has me lost. Also, where do you find instrumentals? Love your channel btw!
Hey! I know it’s a super long video but stick with it because there’s actually a section of me demonstrating what I do on GarageBand! I also explain everything to do with instrumentals and how I get them in the video too 💚 thanks so much Haley x
Ohhh haha I really did try to explain it the best I could! And maybe you missed it I did mention that, they’re from iTunes or RUclips and I explained the process of permissions to use them etc! hope that helps 😊
Hi! So I’m interested in starting a cover channel. But how do I sing live with the instrumental on a mic? Im having trouble syncing that together since I don’t play instruments. Thanks for all your help and advice!
Shelley Mill thanks a million! I was just asking ahead because I feel like not everyone covers and it’s hard to find an article about it.but thanks again!
Aw thank you! I don’t really do enough to make a video out of it! I just use bed head re energise shampoo & conditioner every other day and always brush my hair with a tangle teaser & let it dry naturally as much as I can! I use Brazilian keratin on the ends if my hair gets a bit dry but that’s pretty much it 💚
For your next video can you do a tutorial showing us how you set up your mic and the usb to the computer please, I'm still kinda confused on how to do that
You’d need an audio interface specifically for an iPad if the mic isn’t a usb mic! I’ve never personally used my iPad to record so I can’t really give any advice for that but definitely research an iPad audio interface 💚
Samson g track pro is better than blue yeti as i watched too many reviews on youtube about those 2 mics ..and it's almost the same price so imma get it soon hopefully ☺️
Hey! So sometimes songs just don’t get a claim.. but I’d always upload with the expectation that it would get claimed, because the material doesn’t belong to me! 💚
sometimes the revenue is able to be split, even with content ID! You wont get in trouble if it’s unable to be monetised, the video just gets demonetised and you’ll be notified 💚
I have a Shure SM58C, its basically a regular condenser microphone, and a acoustic guitar-vocal Nuxe stage AC50 amplifier (both are used in live performances) can i use them to create videos like yours with the same quality?
Glad i could help! You’ve got this, I’m sure you’ll be amazing! Just search for the song you want to cover with the word instrumental at the end on RUclips x
thank you!! i have got copyright claims on most of my videos even though i have permission to use the karaoke track. I haven't got an email from youtube yet about it but it still says its copyright claimed. is that okay? will i still make money on my channel despite this?
It totally depends! It’s not necessarily to karaoke track that’s been copyrighted, but the actual song your singing.. so the artist/writers/label etc. If you go into your creator studio and have a look on video manager.. click on the claim and it should explain. It will also tell you whether you’re sharing revenue or whether the money is all going to them.. hope that helps! 💚
It’s a very helpful video, the one I was searching for, but I’m confused..... while recording the video.. do we actually sing or just mimic the words... and then later attach our vocals into it?
Heyy.. so you totally can! It depends on the mic you have.. I’m pretty sure you can find an adapter/pre amp that will allow you to plug your mic into an iPad. I haven’t personally tried it myself though 💚
Shelley mill how can I develop my stage persona? My vocal influences are stevie nicks, Ann Wilson of heart, pat benatar and the female lead singer from the 80's band Quarterflash. Do you have any suggestions for me concerning this?
It’s definitely something you’ll find in your own time! It’s just practice practice practice! And do plenty of research on the people that inspire you, but definitely don’t copy anyone.. just be an exaggerated version of yourself 💚
Thank you so much for this video!! I was wondering if you compress the video size cause my videos tend to be really big! If so what do you use to compress the size? Thank you so much! 🤗
@@shelleymill hahaha totally understand! Also do you have any tips for how you record your video for a cover with respect to the precorded audio componenet? I have watched so many videos, but people tend to graze over that detail which I think is super important. For example I use pre-recorded audio for my covers so when I am creating my cover video, let's say, how would I use the pre-recorded audio in context of using it to record the video. Play the audio off my laptop while I lip sync...I have seen people clap at the beginning of their video and audio to sync up the two parts but if you don't start the pre-recorded audio for your video right after you clap it's the same issue all over again! I have tried to get this all on sync but my lips are often not in sync with the audio and it looks awful 😒 Sorry for the very long comment, but I greatly appreciate your help! (:
Thank you for your helpful video! I know you said that you get all of your instrumentals off of RUclips and iTunes--I was wondering, how do you download them or get them into a file format in order to drag them into iMovie? Thanks!
Glad you found it helpful! If you’ve downloaded from iTunes or a free download provided by the creator, then you can drag them from iTunes directly onto iMovie/GarageBand! If you have permission to use the instrumental, then a safe RUclips to mp3 converter online is the only way I know of to get music off of youtube, but please be careful and make sure you don’t click on any pop ups as they can be riddled with viruses 💚
I just bought mine today. And I still can’t figure it out how to record it using my iphone. I mean record my voice and the music from my laptop at the same time. What can I do to make this possible? Thanks
This video helped a lot... Could you just clear this once again? I've planned to post cover tracks on my channel.... I'm worried about how to release the track leagally... And manu say that getting a sync license costs a lot... Could you suggest me a better way! Or just the youtube content id system is enough to share revenue with the original artist!
I previously used a MacBook then bought an iMac last year! Loved both, macbook is more convenient though as you can of course move it around and edit on the go!💚
I'm not trying to do covers but more like post covers of songs in the background of videos. Person wont be seen, just my art. Would that get demonitized? Or copyright idk
That’s totally dependant on the video and the cover! You are likely to get demonetised or will have to split the revenue so many ways. If you’re ok with that, make sure you credit the song & the video the cover came from to avoid being copyrighted. Hope that helped :)
Hi Shelley, this was extremely helpful(I came over here from your oldie tutorial). I'm very new to making covers and have recently revamped my method to be more professional. I wanted to know if you have a good way to find instrumentals for less popular or non-mainstream songs and also what you mean exactly by asking permission before posting a cover. Couldn't that take weeks to never to hear a response from a popular artist? Thanks in advance and if it's a long answer feel free to DM me. -Frie
Glad I could help! I literally just search RUclips for instrumentals or I make my own. As for permission, you don’t need to ask the artist as youtube already has that covered when you upload and the rights can go to them automatically, you need to have permission from the instrumental creator and you’ll find they either state generally that they give permission for people to use them for covers, or just comment on their video asking for permission if not :)
Hey! I wanted to know something, so if you cover a song using the soundtrack, or even a karaoke video you find on RUclips. Can you put the soundtrack or the karaoke version on your RUclips cover, like obviously giving credit. Because I recently started playing guitar, but I’m not as good YET, so I want to do RUclips covers, but I’m not sure if I could😬 If you could help me with this, I would be so grateful!💕 Btw love the video! It’s really helpful!!
Thanks so much for this. I’m getting a bit confused with the recording side. When I’m filming me singing into my mic am I listening to the instrumental through headphones and then when putting all the layers together you have the audio vocals then the instrumental layer and then the camera visual? 😬 or do I record and play the instrumental out loud and just layer the audio and visual? Xx
The instrumental plays in your earphones within your software whilst recording, so no lining up needed on that part. It saves as one! So then you just need to line up the audio as a whole to your video 💚
@@shelleymill amazing thank you I think I finally understand!! It’s hard understanding it without doing but I think once I do it a few times it’ll click xx

Shelley Mill thanks a million! I was just asking ahead because I feel like not everyone covers and it’s hard to find an article about it.but thanks again!
No worries 💚
Shelley its a request can you do a video on your hair care routine . Your hair are soo good
Aw thank you! I don’t really do enough to make a video out of it! I just use bed head re energise shampoo & conditioner every other day and always brush my hair with a tangle teaser & let it dry naturally as much as I can! I use Brazilian keratin on the ends if my hair gets a bit dry but that’s pretty much it 💚
Thanks so much this video helps a lot😁
Glad I could help 😀
Your such a lovable character I had to subscribe
Aww that’s so lovely thank you x
Omg finally someone answers all my questions ❤️😭😭
Really glad I could help 💚
For your next video can you do a tutorial showing us how you set up your mic and the usb to the computer please, I'm still kinda confused on how to do that
Hey lovely! It literally just plugs straight in through one wire into the USB port so there’s not really anything to show 💚
Shelley Mill if I was to use an ipad for garage band would it be the same thing? Connect the Mic to the ipad?
You’d need an audio interface specifically for an iPad if the mic isn’t a usb mic! I’ve never personally used my iPad to record so I can’t really give any advice for that but definitely research an iPad audio interface 💚
Or for the yeti or any usb microphone you’d need a usb to lightning microphone adapter 💚
Shelley Mill ok thank you!!
Samson g track pro is better than blue yeti as i watched too many reviews on youtube about those 2 mics ..and it's almost the same price so imma get it soon hopefully ☺️
Super Helpful. Thank you!!
thank you so much for the video!! it was really helpful!!
So glad i could help Lola 💚
Hi shelley! Im curious to know if you can monetize a cover song without a content id claim?
Hey! So sometimes songs just don’t get a claim.. but I’d always upload with the expectation that it would get claimed, because the material doesn’t belong to me! 💚
Shelley Mill in that case, is it safer not to monetize cover songs without content id? Appreciate your help💜
sometimes the revenue is able to be split, even with content ID! You wont get in trouble if it’s unable to be monetised, the video just gets demonetised and you’ll be notified 💚
Ur such a nice person to listen to and u look good!Keep going!✨🎉🌸
Aw thanks!
How do u get the instrumental???
I have a Shure SM58C, its basically a regular condenser microphone, and a acoustic guitar-vocal Nuxe stage AC50 amplifier (both are used in live performances) can i use them to create videos like yours with the same quality?
Hey! So if you have/get an audio interface you can use your equipment to plug into your computer and record with :)
Thank you for this video! It helped a lot! Now to get the courage to do this myself!
also where can i find instrumentals for the songs i would like to do?
Glad i could help! You’ve got this, I’m sure you’ll be amazing! Just search for the song you want to cover with the word instrumental at the end on RUclips x
Shelley Mill thank you!
This was really helpful, thank you! 😍❤️😍❤️
So glad I could help, Julia 💚💚
Thank you so much... this is legit the best video around 🤍🤍
Soo glad I could help Gracie💚
thank you!! i have got copyright claims on most of my videos even though i have permission to use the karaoke track.
Amazing video helped a lot Thanks and great accent btw!!
Oooh thank you so much! It was quite helpful💜
Glad I could help!
@@shelleymill 😊😊😊💜💜💜
Thank u so much for the good explanation ma'am..
So glad I could help!
You’ve helped me so much!!!! Thank you!!!!
Tutai. 95 so glad I could help! You’re welcome 💚💚
Thank you for sharing this! Its a big help xxx ❤
thanks for making this video shelley
No problem 😁
It’s a very helpful video, the one I was searching for, but I’m confused..... while recording the video.. do we actually sing or just mimic the words... and then later attach our vocals into it?
Can I connect the mic to iPad or do I need MacBook xxxx
Heyy.. so you totally can! It depends on the mic you have.. I’m pretty sure you can find an adapter/pre amp that will allow you to plug your mic into an iPad. I haven’t personally tried it myself though 💚
I was think to make singing video in my you tube but I was confused and now I am not confused any more thanks
Glad I could help!!💚
So so helpful! You seem so lovely. Thank you for this❤️
I’m so glad I could help 💚💚
I always wonder how find the music
thank u .... i learned your advice...
Glad I could help!
so good , almost everthing i needed , peace :)
@@shelleymill what am I looking for when I research these vocal influences that I listed?
Hi Shelley nice one really helpful video
Hey!! Thank you, really glad you found it helpful x
this was so helpful thank you so so much 💗
Glad I could help 💚
Thank you so much for this video!! I was wondering if you compress the video size cause my videos tend to be really big! If so what do you use to compress the size? Thank you so much! 🤗
Hey! No problem, no I don’t I just save it as normal on iMovie but that’s probably why my videos take so long to upload 🤦♀️
The content ID system should be enough :)
@@shelleymill i found that signing up for an MCN is a good idea that they'd take care of the legal processes.... Do you have any thoughts about that?
Thank you for doing this video! Are you using an iMac or Macbook? I’m looking for recommendations. Thanks ❤️xx
I previously used a MacBook then bought an iMac last year! Loved both, macbook is more convenient though as you can of course move it around and edit on the go!💚
@@shelleymill Fab, thanks! 😊Xx
How many equipment do it needs? can it be for duo like me and my friend singing together?
THANKYOU :)
You can just use one mic if there’s two of you! The yeti has a duet setting which would be handy for you 💚
I'm not trying to do covers but more like post covers of songs in the background of videos.
Thank you Shelley - I make tracks, if you are interested let me know - I use GarageBand on MacBook as well
No problem! 💚
,the mic can get quite CRACKELEEE' 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I’m from the north of England hahaha we say things literally how they’re spelt 😂
@@shelleymill yeah I know. It's just so interesting and funny at the same time😂
I NEW IT
I really want to make my own channel and record my own covers😍 but I don't know where to start
Honestly this video should really help you out I spent ages planning it & filming and editing to make sure I got through everything 💚
Shelley Mill thank you very much 💜
Shelley from where do u get instrumentals for ur covers?
This is explained in the video 😊
You're awesome this is really helpful. Thanks!☺
Glad i could help!
Thankyou so much for the advice!you are fantastic!
You’re welcome! So glad I could help 💚
Because I recently started playing guitar, but I’m not as good YET, so I want to do RUclips covers, but I’m not sure if I could😬 If you could help me with this, I would be so grateful!💕
Btw love the video! It’s really helpful!!
Yes you can do! Just check the description of the karaoke video first to make sure they don’t say that you can’t use it! So glad I could help💚
Shelley Mill thank uuuuu!!!!💕💕
So informative 🖤
Thank you!!
Sony Vegas Pro 13 is what I'm currently using but I want to switch to Movavi soon
Ahh thanks for sharing alternative programmes 😄
It’s hard understanding it without doing but I think once I do it a few times it’ll click xx
do you need a type of license?
Nope!😊
