This run mostly abuses savewarping, a simple glitch that allows you to save anywhere. It’s the same principle as in whg4, except that coins aren’t automatically saved, and for that reason it wasn’t discovered to be possible in whg3 as well until February 2021.

Around this time I also discovered that you can skip levels by savewarping during tip screens. Because L4 could be skipped now, I got some incentive to learn this speedrun, but not much, since it was still mostly a standard playthrough of L5. Later, Danicker found out that you can actually still save coins, by closing and opening the game. This meant you could use a savewarp after D3, making that part a bit less risky.
It also means I had to open the game during a run. My setup for the run involves a specific window size that isn’t quite full screen but close to it. It’s not necessarily hard to prepare, but doing it during the run might be awkward. I decided to take a multiclient approach similar to some other games, where you start the run with multiple instances of the game open at once. The recording software I use is able to automatically switch which window is being recorded if you close the first one, although with a small delay. Theoretically the savewarp would still register right before the main menu appears, meaning I could trigger the addicting games bit while still in D3, overlapping the two windows and saving about five seconds, but I decided not to do that since it would be a little too complex.

It wasn’t until September 2021 that I discovered how to take more advantage of this state, and found some applications in L5. This made the run more interesting, and made me seriously consider running it myself, which I started with right after finishing my whg4 glitched run and accompanying commentary.
I’d been routing L5 in secret, constantly refining and tweaking until I was satisfied. At a certain point I had implemented so many fast routes that a sub 10 became possible to get, even with some leeway. I didn’t initially want to go for that, I just wanted a run that was good enough, but the possibility was very tempting nonetheless. A few weeks before this run I achieved a 10:11, losing 21 seconds in D2. At this point I started doing attempts a lot more often than usual, and after dialing down the craziness in the D2 route I thankfully managed to get what I wanted, after a reasonable amount of time.
Just like the whg4 glitched run, I’ve chosen not to show my cursor since it would be on screen for the majority of the run. Most of the time it’s easy to tell which menu options it’s selecting, there’s just one moment in D2 where the game is closed using the X in the top right.
As for the timing method for this run, I’m not sure yet since this is a brand new category with a bunch of implications. For now I started time when the L1 tip screen appears, and ended when the submit score screen appears.
