First of all, we will try to understand what is a dark lip? And what causes the darkening of lips?
There are various reasons which can change the natural pink or red color of our lips and cause the darkening of lips.
Let’s talk about different factors that can affect our lips and cause pigmented lips.
One of the main reasons for darkening your lips is genetics. It's a genetic tendency that can cause dark lips.
The most common cause of dark lips is poor lifestyle habits like smoking or chewing tobacco. A lot of people have a habit of biting their lips which can cause pigmented lips.
There are some psychological causes that can lead to dark lips. Changing the color of your lip is the sign of aging. People who tend to have freckles have a high chance of getting dark lips.
If you have sensitive skin, using expired skin products or using products that are not suitable for your skin can cause the pigmentation of the skin.
One of the common examples of this is lipsticks. Lipsticks that contain olive oil can cause darkening of lips. Excess use of lipsticks can turn your lips dark.
Some people suffer from inflammatory skin diseases like lichen planus or lichen sclerosis, because of these skin conditions your lips might get dark. Some people have skin conditions named genodermatoses like Albright syndrome or familial intestinal polyposis which shows symptoms like darkening of lips.
Endocrinological condition is one of the reasons which can cause dark lips. Conditions like Addison's disease causes hyperpigmentation in which your lips can get pigmented.
In some people, dark lips are caused due to antimalarial therapy which is one of the drug-induced side effects.
Some type of malignancies like chronic diseases or melanoma which can affect your body and your lips can turn dark. Some medicines can also cause darkening of lips like medicines of cancer.
Overexposure to the sun can lead to dark lips. When our skin gets exposed to the sun, it causes tanning of the skin. In some people deficiency of the vitamin is also one of the reasons which can cause dark lips.
Any type of nutritional deficiency reflects on your skin. Overconsumption of a specific nutrient can also cause dark spots like consuming excess amounts of iron can lead to discoloration of the skin.
How to treat Dark Lips?
First of all, you must visit a nearby dermatologist. The dermatologist will assess the level of your pigmentation will recommend a treatment.
One of the most common treatment to treat dark lips is topical creams which contain skin lightening agents hydroquinone, kojic acid, retinol or arbutin. But remember one thing, you should consult a dermatologist for correct dosage and duration of using topical creams.

1) sun tan
2) vitamin deficiency or excess can cause skin discoloration
3) certain medicine e.g anti cancer drugs, or product that doesn't suit ur skin eg lipsticks containing cholesterol
4) lip licking can cause lip pigmentation

The center of the middle of my lip (procheilon) usually peels and has left that part white while the rest of my lip is brown. Is there any remedy for this? I used to peel my lips with my lower teeth in childhood But, now even if I don't want to half of the skin peels...while the rest is just stucked I can't possibly walk around with hanging skin and a white bruise(acne) on my lips ...
