Vietnam has the most varied and delicious food anywhere. I live in Thailand and love the food, but compared to Vietnamese food, Thai food is boring. If you hadn't guessed, anh yêu Việt Nam ❤
Your Vietnamese is fine Gary. Kudos for trying new things and attempting to speak another language. I know it’s discouraging when people giggle, but know they’re not doing it in a mocking way. Makes locals happy to see foreigners attempting to speak their language
@gary: Vietnamese people are friendly. One trick for tourists to clear out any possibile misunderstandings is to make clear about your your curiosity and the intention in filming & ask for permission. That would eliminate akward moments & most of them will welcome you with open arms!
I’m going Da Nang in September and I cannot wait to try this! It’s not even available in Vietnamese restaurants in London you have to buy the ingredients from the oriental supermarket and make at home
The first dish he had is a regional dish of Danang, rarely found even in other parts of Vietnam, similar to "cao lầu" in Hoi An. Fermented anchovies sauce is like the final boss of stinky but ultra umami Viet sauce, along with fermented shrimp paste in the second dish. While this "bún mắm" is dry noodle, there's another dish with the same name but almost completely different that is very popular in the south, with seafood, roasted pork in a fermented fresh water fish sauce based broth. Hopefully the weather is nice when you there!
hi Gary, if u can handle the "mam tom", it will take your food to the next level. add chili to your mam tom, add lime to it.. stir until it bubble, then u r set
I think next time you can ask the restaurant to put the fermented sauce on a side, that way you can control how much or if at all you will put in your bowl. You can just eat it with the thick fish sauce and no fermented sauce. 😊
For bun dau mam tom you have to use your chopsticks to stir the mam tom up first. It's not original but a mix of mam tom, sugar, oil, chilli, vinegar to reduce the salty and fishy.
I saw the second half of this about a week or so ago when you first posted it, so you know I'd eat that. I'm even more interested in the first one here, the bun mam as a breakfast dish. I would definitely have that along with all the condiments and peppers. I'm actually growing some of those long peppers (not sure if they're Vietnamese or Thai) and they should be ready for tasting in another two weeks or so. I'll let you know if they're as hot as they're supposed to be. Enjoying these Da Nang videos, not sure if I've seen them all yet but keep 'em coming.
@@theroamingcook I'll be waiting here with baited breath. Lol. Not really, actually, I'm havin' a beer and watching the Subway Series game between the Yankees and the Mets. Two iconic baseball teams, both having one of their worst seasons.
People do get happy when you are willing to try the "difficult" dishes. My first morning in Saigon, the bún riêu ladies in the market couldn't wait to see if I could handle mắm tôm, and mixed some up for me. They made a bit too much of a big deal about it when I liked it 😅 and decided that I needed a Vietnamese wife. (Somehow I think that wasn't really about liking mắm tôm tho.) 😉
@@theroamingcook You live there, you know the answer. :-) (I literally got asked "Lạp gia định chưa" within 5 minutes of exiting the airport in Saigon, pretty much every day for a month, and my Grab driver back actually wanted to give me his number so he could set me up when I returned.) 😀
Wow, looks awesome! been researching SEA for 2 years planning a move, and Da Nang, VietNam was my pick. $150 for a nice apartment close to the beach. And of course, THE FOOD!!! When I asked you before, you said for food, skip Philippines, so I narrowed it down to 2 places. Jomtien-Pattaya or Da Nang. What say you my friend? AND, Tiếng Việt của bạn nghe hay đấy!
Ohhh that's a tough one. Although I'm not a massive Patts fan, there is some great food there and it's so easy to get to other places in Thailand. The beach is much nicer and cleaner in Danang if that means anything to you?
You are very brave for eating those stinky Mam . I always have to pinch my nose whenever i smell that stuff . Erk ! the guy didn't wear gloves when he cut the meat for your soup .
This is the 2nd time you put this video about the stinky shrimp sauce & tofu , rice noodles ? So much good food in Vietnam , why put the same video up 2 times ?
Hahaha yes it was strange because it tastes exactly like the fermented fish sauce we have in Thailand which through me off a bit 😅 the shrimp paste I would have on my cereal though!
do you dislike "umami" because it sounds pretentious? i would understand that, because the word wasn't around when we were young, but i think you should feel fine about it because it's one of the basic tastes. any other word would be less precise. just a newer word than "salty", "sweet", "bitter", "sour"
Vietnamese cuisine always make foreign tourist suprise and love it. incredible food🎉

Thanks!
Thank you so much Dan 🙏🙏

Thanks so much, I've got to learn some more
Can't wait my brother
It requires a person with good, strong taste buds to appreciate these kind of fermented foods. You are blessed!
I've had a lot of practise 😃

I totally get it. So many people think they can just film without buying anything, it drives me mad!
Thank you for sharing, bun mam from da nang is one of my favorite dish all time!
My pleasure!
Good job Gary, keep up the good work!
Thanks as always Mike!
I love your style. Such a nice man
ah thank you, I appreciate that!

You're better than me for trying Bun Mam cuz I'm Vietnamese and I don't even go near it, let alone eat it.
Haha yeah it was a challenge alright
Well done Gary, great video 😊
Thanks Carol!

When are you gonna do another live? It has been a minute since your last.
Tomorrow Sean mate. It’s been nearly a month!
Nice 1 Gary 👍🏻
I’m going later in the year will try these dishes then

i think you should try the dish called Hủ Tiếu which Gordon ramsay said that the best food in the world
I love it in Saigon!
what a beast, should have gotten some beer also
I’m off the beers at the moment otherwise that would have been perfect 😭
Food adventure, an interesting video
Glad you enjoyed it
Try Tiết canh. Even I won't touch that. Those 2 I wouldn't have no problem consuming.
That sounds like a challenge!

🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Going get me some bun dau when I go to Saigon.
When are you heading there?
@@theroamingcook beginning September. Then on the weekend I will go try some of your recommendations in BKK.
You can eat bún mắm at everytime in a day. My mom makes this 4 or 5 times in a month because eating too much mắm will cause high blood pressure
I bet your mum's is the best!
So good!
❤️
Hi Gary. Does the mam tom taste similar to Budu, that wonderful condiment from NW Malaysia and deep south Thailand? Gotta love me some funk!
I think you should add sugar into that mắm tôm, because it's very salty.
I love it salty but I’ll try the sugar next time!
Or use sparingly.
Sugar in Mắm tôm is for the weak mate, MGS is the shit if you can handle it.
Hello from the 3rd largest Vietnamese community in the United States (Houston). 😃🤤😋
I would absolutely murder two or three bowls of bun mam, washed down with a few cans of Huda❤
Now you're talking mate
Haha...Just put Vietnam on the bucket list...haha.
You are very brave for eating those stinky Mam . I always have to pinch my nose whenever i smell that stuff . Erk ! the guy didn't wear gloves when he cut the meat for your soup .
I've had some practise!
You are tougher then my mate😂 Im stay away from mom tom...🤢
😂😂😂😂😂
Just so you know...fermented fish sauce is fish sauce before it has been filtered. Just think of it as 'virgin" or unfiltered fish sauce!
Thank you!
It is "bún mắm nêm" bro!
Thank you! 🙏🙏

Yeah I get your point totally but this was always meant to be part of this video, I just thought I’d lost the start footage at one point!
Think I'll give it a miss
😅😅😅
Spicy
Always!
wow, u can eat Bun Mam, a bit stinky smell but addicted taste
So good😀
There are loads of Vietnamese people who would not eat any type of mam.
I'm sure!
I'm not brave enough to eat mam tom, never mind for breakfast like that. I can tell it was tough for you. 😂
Hahaha yes it was strange because it tastes exactly like the fermented fish sauce we have in Thailand which through me off a bit 😅 the shrimp paste I would have on my cereal though!

That is why I dislike it yes! But you’re right, I need to get over it and I use it it all the time haha
Lol you couldn’t mouth the first one
😂
Stay away from places called mam
😂
❤❤❤❤❤
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
13:03 I'll tell you what it is, it's pineapple. You got it wrong mate, not jackfruit.
Thanks for the heads up! The guy translated it to jackfruit on his phone but maybe he was talking about something else!
Young jackfruit is there, one of the ingredients . Pineapple is offen in the mam nem sauce.
