  • The St. Charles Streetcar in New Orleans is a unique and fun train to ride and watch. When I was there, it was cool, instead of the usual summer heat.

    One of my childhood dreams, dragging down the trolly poll and let it rebounce back to the wire. Fun video Luke! I am fascinated by the streetcar at New Orleans and I hope to visit there.

      James Wong at the beginning of the video, when the operator puts the trolley pole up, it makes a cool electrical “click” sound. Very cool!

    They apparently have machinery so advanced that they can make any parts that these old cars need. In fact, NORTA has built replica cars from the ground up.

    Incredible video Luke of the New Orleans, Louisiana- St. Charles route streetcar. Lots of different perspectives. Love the shots from the various neighborhoods. The streetcar & the joggers 🏃‍♂️ and dog 🐕 walkers seem to co-exist well in this streetcar space.

    It's humorous to me how rickety and clackety the St. Charles cars are compared to the Canal and Riverfront cars which are almost silent (and air conditioned)!

    • @Luke_Starkenburg
      @Luke_Starkenburg  4 года назад +2

      I love the old St. Charles street cars much more than the modern Canal and Riverfront cars. In the more modern cars, the air conditioning system is so noisy, and in the St Charles streetcars, you can get fresh air by having the windows open! It's so quiet when stopped because there are no noisy fans running.

    How do thely change to a different track, when there is a side track that veers from the main track they are on?
    Is the driver stiring the streetcar to follow which track they want to crossover to?

    • @jalenduplessis1074
      @jalenduplessis1074 2 года назад +2

      There's a movable rail that guilds the streetcar. (Look at 0:44). Some are motorized, spring loaded (at 1:44), and manual (4:30). For this they use a metal rod.

    • @jalenduplessis1074
      @jalenduplessis1074 2 года назад +2

      @@raygeorge9233 Yes sir, but only on the motorized and manuel. The spring ones only move as the streetcar crosses it and they spring back to their set position. For the motorized ones there is a trigger on the wire a streetcar length away from the switch. When the streetcar goes through the trigger accelerating (using it's pole) that triggers the motor that's hooked up to the switch. For the manuel they use a metal rod to move the rail.

    Great video! Looks like I’ll FINALLY get to NOLA end of April! (2 - 3 days) I’m trying to figure out which line is the most scenic and how many miles long is it? (If that’s not too much to ask) Our plan is to hop on at the beginning, take it to the end, then walk back so we can really appreciate all the sights. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. ☺️

    • @Luke_Starkenburg
      @Luke_Starkenburg  2 года назад +1

      The St Charles Streetcar line is pretty long, 13 miles or 21km long. The streetcar runs pretty slowly so if you get a nice window seat, you should be able to see the sights pretty well. I would get out and walk around Tulane University and walk around the park. I would also walk around St Charles and Louisiana and walk to St Charles and Jackson Ave. There are some great mansions around that area, lots of great old architecture.

    • @Luke_Starkenburg
      @Luke_Starkenburg  2 года назад +1

      If I would go back, I would try to take the St Charles Streetcar line to the end which is S. Carrollton at S. Claiborne Stop. Then I would take Uber (8 minute drive) or the 90 bus to Canal + Carrollton where the Canal streetcar runs. If you make it to the Museum of Art Stop, walking around the park is great with the ridable live steam scale train. I'm not sure if the miniature train will be operating in April though.

    Those are really beautiful trolley cars. Are they running on standard gauge (4' 8 1/2") or wider gauge? To me, for some reason, the tracks the trolleys are running on look wider than standard gauge - in some of your footages. I LOVE the classic, vintage design of the 900 series trolley cars, they're a marvel to look at. 🚎
