Wait a minute....Obiwan said he didn't need a *HILT*. The hilt is the metal cylinder that lightsaber wielders hold onto. I think he meant cross guard lasers.

as much as I loved Ewan as obi Wan (one of the few actors I actually liked in the prequels I might add) that would be a pretty bad move.

When swan is referring to a "hilt" what he means is cross guard. Light sabers always have had hilts because you need a hilt to hold it.

A 'hilt' is the handle of a lightsaber, the part you hold, not a cross guard. You think Obi-Wan Kenobi would know this...

The cross-guard is kind of mystery to me what the functional reason for the little laser hilt is really for, and the closest I can figure is that it's for exhaust.

A hilt? It is called a cross guard. The hilt is more commonly known as the handle of the weapon. On a lightsaber, if you didn't have a hilt, you would be holding just the plasma blade, and you would vaporize your hand, unless you used the force to handle it. And also, you need the hilt to project the blade.

personally i prefer the prequels... but thats mainly for the better effect, costumes and technology.

Hehheh, this was in January, he finally did get the call from JJ Abrams to reprise his roll as idk, spirit Obi Wan? STILL haven't seen the film but couldn't stay away from the internet so have spoiled much of the film for myself. Will still be great to watch, eventually.
I only watched the prequels for Obi-Wan. Anakin was annoying and Padme too. I only watched them for the Jedi that was all.

I dont wanna start a discussion, after all if don´t you hate the prequels (except for episode 3 wich was meh) you are wrong anyways.But in a story-telling point of view, prequels aren´t necessary to understand the classic trilogy

Obi-Wan does speak the truth about the cross-guard. Its less effective. More risky to use. And is restricting of movement. You can't really apply a realistic perspective (a.k.a martial arts perspective) with this convoluted saber by doing any flurries or anything else interesting. I feel the fights in the next three movies will stink since they dont have that amazing choreography which made the prequel fights just insane! Clearly they don't have another Ray Park or some other experienced martial artist or stunt coordinator.
Not a cross-guard. Supposedly it's a very early and inefficient version of the light saber, and "the cross-guards" main purpose is to act as like a vent, preventing it from overheating

It may not be necessary but it looks cool and intimidating. What we didn't need was ewans cheesy lines throughout the prequels.

I think the cross-guard is purely for aesthetic reasons, otherwise I see no use for it at all.

+John Titor I personally felt like how it was only used to burn Finns shoulder kinda ruined the whole mysterious cross guard he has. Like I was expecting it to be there to actually have defensive techniques but it was used for the obvious reason of pure attacking purposes. its also like a double edged blade where it can damage the wielder if Finn proved to clash back harder at the sword lock. I just hope episode 8 cleans up what was not explained in this episode. I certainly do not want to read a book that will no longer be cannon again in the future. my points may seem invalid but I guess I was expecting so much more from an awaited sequel to a movie from 30 years ago. it still does look cool though but very hard to twirl with like he did in the movies

I thought pretty much everyone had the same reaction. When we first saw the design, everyone was talking about how it would stop his hands being chopped off during a duel, but the movie surprises us..and I think most had that ''ohhh makes sense'' moment. I don't know, I'm glad they decided to be bold and make a new design, It has already become iconic. lol
Ya I can't wait to see SW8 too. A lot of questions left unanswered. I hope it's just as good as good or better than 7.
