Our animated historical documentary series on the slave uprisings in the Roman Republic continues after 2 Sicilian Servile Wars. This time, the gladiator Spartacus will rise in rebellion against Rome bringing about one of the most dangerous wars for the Republic. His battles against Crassus and Pompey would change history and bring Rome one step closer to becoming an empire.

It's been over 2000 years and we're still idolizing Spartacus and his rebellion. So strong was what his rebellion symbolized: fighting for freedom in the face of overwhelming odds and oppression, that we'll probably still be telling his story 2000 years from now. A group of slaves, immortalized by history. There's so few stories that are as epic.
Quite likely, he could have forced huge change on Rome with just 1 change.
If they'd only killed cruel slave owners, Rome might have been forced to change their treatment of slaves.
But they killed all the rich men they encountered, so Rome was able to see them as just bloodthirsty rebels, rather than people who were mistreated
@@kharnthebetrayer8251 It could be, that that's exactly what they did, but the numbers they killed were a result of how widespread the cruelty was.
To this day, we have only vague accounts of how cruel the Romans actually were. We romanticize their achievements in literature, architecture and other things, but we tend to gloss over that it was slave labor that REALLY powered that empire. Spartacus is proof that there was resistance to that, and it was crushed with brutal torture and public executions. We know that happened. That''s part of the romantic story.
So what about the rest of it? What was the rest of the Empire like? Historians are vague on that. We just do not know. History is violent, and cruel, beyond what we in the sheltered 21st century can even imagine.
@@ktvindicare I do remember hearing somewhere that they killed everyone who had slaves, regardless of treatment.
I think it was Lindybeige but not certain.
And there was surely some who treated slaves well, or at least better than others.
So if Spartacus and the Slaves had been thinking long term (which is understandable why they likely didnt)
They could have found the ones that treated slaves decently, and left them alone.
With how Stubborn Rone was, probably wouldn't have made a huge impact, but it's certainly possible that some kind of slave treatment reform could have happened because of the rebellions

Spartacus is without question one of the most badass people in history, imagine leading an army of 100,000 plus with that many overwhelming victories, with no supply lines, no equipment, compromised of slaves who spoke different languages and were united only by their hatred of Rome. That's some next level G shit right there.

He wasn’t a stranger but a coward. Dude legit didn’t even have the balls to get off his horse to face people he deemed inferior. But dam really one of the people I was happy got a brutal death in the end. Not to sentimentalize historical figures I never met, but if this history is true than I feel for Spartacus to a certain degree.
At Carrhae Crassus was 62 and had not lead an army for 18 years.
Even good generals get old.

It’s interesting to see that Crassus was so cautious in dealing with Spartacus but was so bold as to be foolhardy when picking a fight with the Parthians.
I believe it's written he was jealous of other's politician's military successes and that was his motivating factor.
@@ARandomGuy24 It is just interesting how radical the transformation of tactics was. He gave a bunch of slaves more caution than an empire which rivaled Rome in size and military might. What impatience does to an MF, I guess. And it suggests to me that he never had a very good grasp of tactics to begin with, either.
@@samiamrg7 I think as this vid implied the dude was bitter over the general who came from the North mopping up fleeing slaves and claiming he ended the rebellion when Crassus did the actual battle.
If he was as obsessed with legacy and was that unhappy about the way people perceived the slave rebellion to have ended it may make sense why he went out of his way for "glory" to the point of arrogance. It seems like a logical theory judging from what was valued by Roman society at the time.

I remember watching the first two episodes of Blood and Sand and thinking "This is going to be an embarassingly cheesy series"...and then it became an absolutely fantastic show.
So sad about Andy Whitfield 😔 the guy who replaced him didnt have near the range of emotion and always had that fake voice.

This makes me wonder. Had Spartacus lived during the Pricipate period where Rome was ruled by Emperors who had their Praetorian Guards stationed in Italy. Would Rome's most elite troops be able to put down a strong slave uprising led by Spartacus?

seems like we are missing information on it though. I highly doubt spartacus had the cunning and tactics to defeat multiple consular armies, but then get scammed by pirates.

Alternate timeline, Spartacus took rome and it became the first roman emperor ending the republic, and banning slavery in all roman territory.
In some alternate timeline, Spartacus's revolt ended in a few days, and no one knows who he is. He was never going to topple Rome, and his revolt going as well as it did required a great amount of good fortune.

Crassus was killed years later at the Battle of Carrhae which is considered to be the worst defeat the Roman Republic experienced, Crassus after the battle was decapitated and had molten gold poured down his throat.
I disagree. The Battle of Cannae was MUCH worse.
In the Battle of Carrhae Rome lost more men then in the Battle of Cannae against a much smaller force that they should have beaten with few casualties

Rick Quicker actually Crassus lost over half of his force which while the Parthians lost very minimal men and is still regarded by historians as the worst defeat the Roman Republic suffered as they lost more men at Carrhae (while having more men in their army then they did at sentium) the Sentium to a much smaller force

Spartacus on Starz was so well done that it is the only series I can repeatedly watch. I sought documentaries out to figure what was real. He was truly impressive. It's nice to know that some of my favorites were real, though sad that they didn't enjoy their freedom without conflict.

It's one of my favorite shows I've ever seen. Seasons 1 and 2 I rewatch often but 3 and 4...meh. I know what happened to Andy wasn't anybody's fault but I just can't get into the seasons with Liam

The Starz Spartacus series was a lot more historically accurate than I assumed. 😳
Except when Cracis marched toward Rome and got a glimpse of the city before meeting the Roman army and their doom. In reality he was far further south

For the amount of drama shown in the STARZ TV show, it was surprisingly historically accurate.

Apart from the obvious changes that this rebellion brought to the Roman republic , It would be interesting to know at what extend this rebellion affected the Romans' perspective upon gladiators' recruit and training. Considering that only 70 or less gladiators managed to establish a rebellion by winning easily the first roman militia forces , we could assume that their fighting training was on a high level . Also , It is possible that most of the gladiators on this period had a battle experience as former soldiers who had been captured by the Romans during several wars. According to reliable historical sources and archaeological foundings , during the imperial period the gladiators were an elite class inside the slaves , gaining a great amount of money for their games in the arenas and being something like our nowadays football stars. Evenmore , It is known that the gladiatorial games during the imperial period had not a lethal purpose . In fact , only a 10% of the fighters were killed because of severe wounds and the dead gladiator's owner was receiving a compensation from the state for his loss . To all these above mentioned add the fact that gladiators served as special units in Roman army during this period in several occasions , epsecially on rebellions in the empire as an effective force in guerilla type warfare in exchange of land , political rights , even their freedom . So , these "military gladiators" were receiving an extra training of fighting to be capable in killing their opponents rather than just causing wounds to them as they did in the games . Taking all these into mind , we can safely assumed that this rebellion possibly changed once and for all the way that Romans were recruiting and training slaves to become gladiators . What is almost certain is that this rebellion changed the status of slavery in Roman society , forcing Romans to treat to their slaves with more care and interesting due to the fear of a new brutal rebellion. The vast numbers of slaves , eager to follow Spartacus to freedom , proves that leaving with their masters was unbearable. On the other hand , no major slave rebellion is mentioned in Roman history after this one and that could not be a result of fear but of social changes .
Bull crap. Name the “social changes”. The Romans didn’t do crap and still had slaves! It powered their empire. Maybe no rebellion occurred cause the slaves had no chance at one again. The Romans tightened the screws to put it simply
I don’t think I’ve ever grown to admire a character as much as I have grown to admire Spartacus. Take a minute to ponder on the enormous legacy he left behind. A man who lived more than 2000 years ago and is still talked about. He refused to be treated in a manner akin to that of an animal; he believed that all human beings are worthy of respect, and that even slaves should be treated with kindness and compassion; had the Romans or any fortunate enough a human who was a master treated their subordinates with due respect, many wars would have been prevented. I hold to high regard his unwavering rejection of inhumane treatment and the shedding of blood for mere entertainment. Wherever you are right now Spartacus, rest assured your legacy still lives and that you are not lost down the memory lane 💙 - a fellow free soul 2000+ years later.
I agree with your words, and it sure sounds nice. But the brutal reality is different than what we'd like. The rebels were all killed, with thousands of them crucified. Spartacus is remembered because his revolt was so effective for so long, and sadly... for how brutally it ended. The aftermath which is the fall of the Republic is some sweet irony though.

Wow. The part about his death made me cry. Imagining this rabble, freaking out because against all odds they managed to defeat legion after legion. And here, at the greatest battle of all, the force that made it all possible just vanishes. Those poor guys. Poor Spartacus.

I think people might be attributing nobler motives to Spartacus than he actually had. He committed numerous atrocities himself and there's not much evidence his objective was the end slavery entirely.

I can't get enough about the history of this man. Took on the greatest empire ever and made it tremble. He may not have made speeches like in the TV show but I love the idea he may have said that "so all men and women can live and die in freedom". Also love the possibility that the idea of Spartacus being Thracian penned from his fighting type - The Thracian, and the man is still a massive mystery.
In sources he is described as being a Murmillo (fish man) gladiator not Thraex (Thracian) gladiator. He was from Thrace yet he was called "Spartacus" since he wasn't fighting as a Thraex calling him something like Thracius was not fitting. Gadiators were specialised according to their bodytype, weight, artistic and military background. So Murmillos were generaly heavier then most other types. Thraex and Secutor were lighter with smaller shields (ofcourse Thraex with the identical Thracian curved sword). Murmillo generaly fought against Thraex or an other Murmillo or some times Hoplomacus (the most heavily fitted spear wielding, Greek Hoplite mimicing one). Secutor fought against Retiarius (fish net and trident wielding one).

Love the topic of the Servile Wars! Spartacus was quite the heroic figure! Amazingly, he defeated consular armies 3 times! If he'd have turned northward at that point, history as we know it might be radically different.

@@kharnthebetrayer8251 highly doubtful, the Roman's did not see the mistreatment of people as the problem at all. They saw themselves as masters of the world, their will be done on all who oppose them. Spartacus knew his enemy well and gave them what they had coming to them.

Plutarch, Appian and Florius all claim Spartacus died but his body was never found, so I assumed he was killed as you have stated trying to get to Crassus, or he was wounded and died of those or he went missing.

@@EthGemsnStuff while it could have been a risk, the gladiators were not normally poorly treated. They were highly priced slaves kind of like how a racehorse is treated today. I'm not comparing animal ownership with slavery.

Spartacus is probably the only world wide famous thing to come out from Bulgaria in ancient times but for some reason we never talk about him here. Seriously his story is truly epic.
Could it be because records are unsure whether he was Thracian or just fought in a style called something alike Thracian (can't remember). His past is pretty much unknown.
bulgaria did't exist when spartacus was still alive maybe he was thracian but he was't burgarian

I don't understand why you think Bulgars committed industrial scale genocide when they came to the Balkans. They wouldn't have been able to do it even if they wanted to. The more likely case is that they mixed with the local population just like how the southern Slavs assimilated the Bulgars.
