King crimson were so ahead of their time, considering Jerry was a racecar driver is considered to be a really weird and unique song yet elephant talk was written more than 10 years before (still love primus though!)
One of my favorites. All the bassists of King Crimson have been huge inspirations to me as a player, Tony Levin actually being the main reason I got into bass guitar. It's cool to see some of his Chapman Stick parts transcribed for the good ol' 4 stringer
I own a Stick and its pretty crazy how playing tap style changes your playing. A lot of the Stick's design makes playing tap style feel natural, and all of these techniques can be brought over to bass/ guitar. Tony Levin and Alphonso Johnson were the first big names to start playing the instrument, you can definitely hear the influence on their bass lines before and after they started messing with it.
really humble , smart and nice guy . look at his discography to see all the records he has been on ... a lot of great recordings . also - tony levins funk fingers !
Just bought me my first Bass-yesterday, in fact-and it only has 21 frets! (I chose it because i am an old git who is becoming arthritic!) Now though, having listened to this tutorial of one of my favourite ever pieces I'll never be satisfied with it and after having tried to play Tony Levin's intro to "Sartori In Tangier", I now realise that I should have bought a 5 string Bass! Hours of trawling through Ebay again await!
A Tritone interval is symmetrical and cannot be inverted. So you can take that doublestop down to the 15 and 16 frets as well as 17 and 18 frets. All still on the D and G Strings. For those who want to try this riff on a 20-fret bass.
First of all, you can invert a tritone. Tritone is just a nickname for aug 4th or dim 5th. If you invert an aug 4th it becomes a dim 5th and vice versa. Same sounding pitch but very different from an interval standpoint (think Lydian scale vs Locrian scale for a more obvious example). The problem with inverting like I did on the Jerry vid is that the melody note changes. It’s not enough to think of chords as just block ‘something’. All chord voicings have an upper melody note that our ears will always be drawn to. If you invert the tritone in Elephant Talk it’ ll sorta work. But it’ll also sound wrong from a melodic perspective.
Another Primus song similar to Elephant Talk is DMV off Pork Soda. Having tutorials saves hours of neck searching so now l'm curious if there is a guitar tutorial for Elephant Talk. I haven't deciphered if Fripp is using traditional or his new "standard tuning" for his rhythm line
Hi Mark, I am new to playing bass and bought myself an Ibanez jet king, is it possible that when introducing your videos you run through your gear, I may sound dumb but just want to learn,Thanks
I just built a Fretwire PJ bass kit and it came with a 24 fret neck. I thought at the time that I’d never use the extra frets. And then this video happens 🙃

nuts. its similar with the spoken vocals as well
@@auto1nfanticid3 yeah, they were really ahead of their time. Still are.
Ironically, Primus didn't do it first!
Tony is an absolute POWERHOUSE!! As soon as I found him I knew he’d be at the top of my favorite bassists list, alongside Les. ;)

I’ve never played one, or even seen one in person, but God I would love to. They’re such a cool instrument!
@@leons.kennedy1571 shhh go back to saving baby eagle.
Claypool cites Tony as one of his main influences
Thanks Mark! It looks like you are really having fun playing Elephant Talk. Great stuff, and always appreciated!

One small thing for those learning this Tony plays a high A with his left hand on the last tritone as well.
Awesome...Thanks!
I'm not a King Crimson fan although I love Elephant Talk as it's very Talking Heads
Wowzas, this truly is a trying task. Shame I have never managed to perfect Jerry is a Race Car Driver...

Can u do an interview with les claypool
I wish
@@talkingbasslessons I really want to see an interview with him
man f#$% just traded my 24 fret for a 22, never thought i would need those frets
Nope, I give up that's the bass equivalent of patting your head and rubbing your stomach at the same time. Really interesting lesson though Mark.

View it as an opportunity rather than a problem.
An opportunity to buy another bass 😁
My bass has 25 frets
