What I love about this is that this is the first time we've ever seen G-Man show any emotion. I loved how he starts off surprised and shocked and then that evolves into him being angered, like visibly pissed off. Despite him only being present in the game for a few seconds, we learn so much about him in those moments
This scene is seared into my mind. It is so chilling from beginning to end. The callback to Breen's line "What is it you have created?" was powerful here. Surreal and so well done. And of course, "We'll see... about that." is unforgettable.
This one is my favourite scene in the HL series. Its because it tells us what happened after Half Life 2, and it shows that Someone, Something... Is stronger than the G-man.
A theory says that the exact moment when he talks with the past alyx is in the "Heart to heart" scene in episode 2 as he doesn't have his briefcase, the reason that he is in two times at the same time is that he traveled in time and clearly showed Alyx he "divided" himself traveling in several directions
I can even think that in HL2 in his first speech he was referencing himself in hl:a "The right man in the wrong place can make all the difference in the world"
@@turbulento6918 Honestly, I think the HL:A ending was just retconned because Mark Laidlaw released the whole rest of the post-episode 2 story under the name "Epistle 3". Valve didn't want to continue with a spoiled story so they had to carefully change things from what was originally planned.
It took me a while but I finally figured out what is going on in this scene. The G-Man was going to but Gordon back in stasis but the Vortigaunts stopped him which angered him.
I think he's actually about to put Gordon *OUT* of stasis, but years ahead, and possibly on another world. He already succesfully put Gordon in stasis at the end of Half-Life 2, now he returns because he found a new task for Gordon. That's just my idea though.
I think that this is the first scene in te entire series that the camera is not gordon's point of view, i think that we see what happened to alyx after gordon leave, and then what happened to gman when he walked away from gordon and steped in that white door. Maybe he was not going to talk to gordon and this scene is just like the scene in the citadel where we are not seeing what gordon sees, I don't know, it's hard to understand cutscenes in half-life since you are all the time seeing throw the protagonist's eyes.
@@dbgtbrasil5 basically that g-man was going to take alyx and let Gordon to die in the explosión, but the vortigauns arrived, cutted g-man short of his speech and saved both of them, fucking g-man for good
@@carso1500 at the end of half life 2 Gman was praising Freeman's ability and have new jobs offerred to him. Make no sense that Gman was about to kill Freeman then and there, more like taking him always, and leaving Alyx there to die. Also, the vortigaunts brought Alyx always from the explosion, but not Freeman in the same cutscene, probably because they couldn't, as Freeman was already being taken always by the Gman into statis. They only appeared to save Freeman later on when he was next to Gman. So in short, I think what Sanic Hotdog said was correct.
I love how you can see how displeased G-man is with seeing Gordon being pulled out of stasis, from what we know from G-man he is normally always at the top of power. But at this moment he has no power against an army of vortigaunts. This also reveals how his one true weakness is Vortessence, which is poised on how he was contained in the vault in Half Life Alyx.
This is such an amazing scene. The way the game reassures the player that Alyx is safe. The way Gman looks like he's about to say something, but then notices the vortigaunts. The way he's amused at first, but then becomes visibly worried. The way he seems to lose himself for just a second. The way the game tells that player that Gman isn't all-powerful.
1:17 Notice how as Gman gets further from Gordon, his projection fades away, and the Vortigaunts that grab Gordon have a projection that appears from them, signifying that they now have control over him with the vortessence.
@@carso1500 It's more "control" as in they can control the Gman's access to Gordon, whereas as we saw, if the vortessence is directed *away* from Gordon, the Gman can talk to him.
Half Life Alyx: “has been unable, or unwilling, to perform the tasks layout out before him” Half life episode 1: we’ll see, about that Half life alyx: we have struggled to find a suitable... replacement, until now. Half life 2 episode 2: “extract some small... repayment owed for your own survival. Summary: Alyx will now be assigned the task that G-Man planned for Gordon, but couldn’t because of the Vortiguants.
"It was intended to be Gordon's POV. As I recall, the idea behind that segment was that Gordon is sharing a vort's eye view of the events, as they nip back in time to extract you guys (somewhat messily) and then it all folds back into place again to catch you up." - Marc Laidlaw
i agree with you, i don't think he is 'evil' but he is undoubtedly not a good guy. He seems to be completely indifferent to any morals, and just does anything to achieve personal goals to seemingly satisfy his 'employers'. His actual motives are unclear but i would be fairly certain to say that he is not driven by evilness, or some sort of nefarious plan.
"We'll see... about that!" Yes, we see it, you're the reason HL3 will never come back because you erased the number "3" from Gaben Newell's head. EDIT: As of 2020, we will certainly see... *about that!*
It entirely depends on when he decided to leap out of time to get Alyx. As how I see it, after the events of Half Life 2 episode 1, when the vortigaunts freed Freeman out of his stasis, G-man had to search for other options, as soon as he got out from the vortigaunts he travalled back in time, let the combine capture him and spread the information the Gordon was in the chamber, so it would lead Alyx to him. The first version of HL2: EP2, when Eli dies, it was the main timeline, but because meanwhile we were playing Episode 2, HL:Alyx was happenning at the same time 5 years ago, because that's where the alternative time-line got made, because I think Alyx didn't meet G-man in the original timeline, just after we fucked with him in the begginning of Episode 1. So after HL: Alyx, the timeline would have been the same, if G-man wouldn't made Alyx kill the Advisor, but because she did kill it, and save her father, an alternative timeline was created at that is where we continue in Half-Life 3.
Very interesting theory. Als gman saying other subjects are unable or unwilling for his cause with gordon in the background hints to that theory of him not being able to reach gordon due to the vorts
Honestly? I think that if Valve releases HL3, it won't be in the prime timeline here 🤣 It will be in some alternate timeline which will fck up this timeline, but we won't remember this 🤣
So yeah, I think the Vorts have reversed time to the point where Gman nabs Gordon and leaves Alyx. They warp directly into the Gman's time stop and free Alyx from it, and take her away. At 0:55 you see her being freed from the time-stop by the vorts then immediately teleported out. They can't do this for Gordon though because the Gman already has him focussed on. So they wait till Gman comes to get Gordon back and stop him by showing up to his pocket dimension or whatever it is that he uses and physically just holding him back. That allows two other vorts to warp in and get you while he's distracted. This scene tells a massive story with basically no dialogue.
If you think HL2 had a bad plot development, then you seriously need to reconsider gaming development and storywriting. Half-Life in its entirity is one masterpiece of story development, and things will get revealed in time. I have patience to wait until the very end. jacobthelioneater is entirely right, I don't think HL is for you if you think it's that bad :-/
So, how's that half-life 3 treating you? Sorry, too soon? Either way, I do love the intrigue involved with G-man here. At this point, I just really want to see what he wants with Freeman. And with Xen and the Combine.
G-man probably noticed there was something wrong with Gordon's stasis so he went in to check what was going on, only to find the vorts messing with his plans.
*"Tell me Doctor Freeman, if you can. You have destroyed so much! What is it exactly that you have created? Can You name even one thing? I Thought not..."* That was the best sentence of words i have ever head!
A theory of mine: G-man had accepted a certain offer for gordon freeman's services, and here he was in stasis. G-man was going to take gordon out of stasis, but the vortigaunts prevented him from doing so. So after half-life 2 had ended, alyx would have died and gordon been moved to another world for some task, had the vorts not been there.
One of the things that makes G-Man all the more terrifying is the fact that there are very few other characters who seem to be aware of him, and ALL of them wish to repel him and his influence. Eli, Nihilanth, and all of the vortigaunts recognize his influence and fear it. It implies that the G-Man has done things to them that are worth being afraid of, without actually saying what it is, and knowing the kind of reality bending power that G-Man wields, that is easily the most intimidating thing about him. Not to mention his enigmatic "employers".
so this what gman means when in ep2 he says "But I had to wait until your friends, were otherwise occupied" the vorts can stop gman through the vortessence i assume.
The one thing that I'm not looking forward too in Half-Life 3 /episode 3 is the graphics. The previous-gen graphics of Half Life 2 were in my opinion, quite a unique characteristic of the game. :(
Toastyplace I'd be totally fine with it being the same graphics as HL2 Episode 2. Honestly they were upgraded to such a degree that they still look fantastic, they really are still quite advanced to this day. It might not be totally obvious sometimes but just taking a second look can be stunning.
Toastyplace thre are next gen graphics games that didnt have the level of expression that half life 2 had due to them being in the right hands. I can only imagine what they would manage with todays. but my main worry is whether those people and that culture and work ethic still exists in valve. The stuff that was so strongly conveyed in the dev talk in the game
tenjenk Well I've just been playing Dishonored, and the same creative arts director from Half-Life 2 worked on that too. And if you've never played or seen Dishonored, it looks absolutely fucking fantastic!
I heard a theory that says this scene was the reason why g man hired alyx, g man realise that gordon will Not. Follow his orders so he hired alyx that has the same potencial that gordon but the difference is alyx cant say no to g-man because thanks to him his dad is alive and she probably thinks that he can change that again
Its a shame that we probably wont see another half life game, at least for a very long time. This cutscene was a major Character break for the G-man. Ever since Half Life 1, he was always a cold and calculating observer of events. He never exhibited any overt emotions, and always simply remarked on Gordon's actions. However here, the Vortigaunts are literally holding him at bay, and the G-man is legitimately frustrated or angry. This clearly is an extremely subtle hint at some much greater conflict occuring behind the scenes, something we have no grasp upon after Episode 2, the last piece of Media we have. I genuinely hope this is expanded in some form at some point, because it seemingly signified a much deeper plot thread that was never explicitly shown throughout the rest of Half-Life
One thing I love about the Vortigaunts is that despite them knowing Gordon Freeman is under the control of Gman they see him as a prophet of sorts and seek to save him from the Gman as he has saved them.
I know this video is old and nobody's gonna see this, but i think gman is like a bounty hunter, I mean, YOU (gordon freeman) are the bounty hunter, the gman himself only offers your "services", probably the vortigaunts "hired" gordon to free the world from the combine, and when the job was "done" (destroying that tower in city 17), the gman came to take his "marvelous world changing tool" away, but gordon was not done, at least is what the vortigaunts think, so they took gordon by force to finish the job, if HF2 EP 3 existed, probably the combie will hire another tool from the gman, Adrian Shepard, to counter Gordon's effort to free the world
You'd think seeing the G-man finally get bested would make us feel good. But we know he's incredibly powerful. We've only ever seen him smug and confident before Seeing him visibly angry but keeping it contained is terrifying.
They are freeing Gordon from Gman's grip. The thing is, Gordon actually freed them from the Nihilanth's control in HL1, so it seems like they try to help him anyway they can. It's really awesome how they used to be our deadly enemies, now their our most powerful and one of our closest allies.
No sé el por qué pero me encanta el sonido de presentación del episodio 1 (los primeros 10seg), aunque dure poco transmite perfecto la situación a verse en esta expansión
Spoiler alert for Alyx Who's here after Alyx's ending? The Vortigaunts were used to keep G-Man imprisoned for the Combine. That ties up so neatly to Episode 1's opening
Woah... Epistle 3's ending is like EP1's intro but the roles are reversed, Gordon left to die and saved by Vortigaunts whereas Alyx is taken by Gman, of course she isn't taken from Gman like Gordon was.
Before this, his speech was very indifferent and business-like. this is the first time we see him genuinely angry, which makes it even more sinister.
He showed something different in this speech: emotion. And for something like him, that's unatural.
I really love this intro because it makes him look like what he is made to represent (At least how i see it, haha): A strict business man, making sure the work of his employers is carried out. This is the first time where he doesn't appear omnipotent and untouchable. It's the first time we see him with any vulnerability.
in some cut dialogue, he straight up says "well, shit"
I love how when the G-man notices the first he smiles, but then as more appears he becomes visibly worried

It took *8* to even match him!
So, this is the reason why he went after Alyx
A theory says that the exact moment when he talks with the past alyx is in the "Heart to heart" scene in episode 2 as he doesn't have his briefcase, the reason that he is in two times at the same time is that he traveled in time and clearly showed Alyx he "divided" himself traveling in several directions
@@turbulento6918 wow nice find, i didn't notice that he doesn't carry the briefcase at that time
@@ValianTheRELover I did not discover it, but on the part of valve it is a quite subtle detail
I can even think that in HL2 in his first speech he was referencing himself in hl:a
"The right man in the wrong place can make all the difference in the world"
@@turbulento6918 Honestly, I think the HL:A ending was just retconned because Mark Laidlaw released the whole rest of the post-episode 2 story under the name "Epistle 3".
So in short, I think what Sanic Hotdog
said was correct.
@@hoangsh12 and yet we now know that g-man has lose interest in Gordon and gained interest on alyx
That 1 dislike is *Wallace* *Breen*.
aaaand the second one is the G-man
And the 3 like is from the metro-cop who gordon killed like a litlle headcrab with the pistol
can you tell him i said fuck you
4th is the Nihilanth
Yeah
This is such an amazing scene. The way the game reassures the player that Alyx is safe. The way Gman looks like he's about to say something, but then notices the vortigaunts. The way he's amused at first, but then becomes visibly worried. The way he seems to lose himself for just a second. The way the game tells that player that Gman isn't all-powerful.
holy fuccckkk, the environmental storytelling
I’d like to imagine Adrian Shepard is there, just watching as Gordon gets plucked out of stasis as he remains. Poor guy.
I think they saved him too and sent him to Ravenholm
1:17
Notice how as Gman gets further from Gordon, his projection fades away, and the Vortigaunts that grab Gordon have a projection that appears from them, signifying that they now have control over him with the vortessence.
more like they have set him free, before they were the slaves and gordon free them, then now returned the favor
@@carso1500 It's more "control" as in they can control the Gman's access to Gordon, whereas as we saw, if the vortessence is directed *away* from Gordon, the Gman can talk to him.
hell, gman entering the room couldve easily been to initiate half life 3. god dammit vortigaunts youve doomed us

Good news
@@10player Very, *very* good news.
this actually wouldve been cannon
These are the unforeseen consequences
How is it that HL2 still has better facial animations than modern AAA games.
Because That's one of the purposes of the source engine (and also because valve is competent when creating games)
Because valve if full of engineers other companies like EA are full of finance bros and MBAs
It entirely depends on when he decided to leap out of time to get Alyx. As how I see it, after
the events of Half Life 2 episode 1, when the vortigaunts freed Freeman
out of his stasis, G-man had to search for other options, as soon as he
got out from the vortigaunts he travalled back in time, let the combine
capture him and spread the information the Gordon was in the chamber, so
it would lead Alyx to him. The first version of HL2: EP2, when Eli
dies, it was the main timeline, but because meanwhile we were playing
Episode 2, HL:Alyx was happenning at the same time 5 years ago, because
that's where the alternative time-line got made, because I think Alyx
didn't meet G-man in the original timeline, just after we fucked with
him in the begginning of Episode 1. So after HL: Alyx, the timeline
would have been the same, if G-man wouldn't made Alyx kill the Advisor,
but because she did kill it, and save her father, an alternative
timeline was created at that is where we continue in Half-Life 3.
Very interesting theory. Als gman saying other subjects are unable or unwilling for his cause with gordon in the background hints to that theory of him not being able to reach gordon due to the vorts
Honestly? I think that if Valve releases HL3, it won't be in the prime timeline here 🤣 It will be in some alternate timeline which will fck up this timeline, but we won't remember this 🤣
I love how genuinely confused Gman is in this.
The way Gman gets pissed off about the vortigaunts is iconic
In this Moment the contract between Gordon n gman ends... So he contract alyx in the end of last game
G-Man had never lost his cool
Seeing him angry is genuinely terrifying not knowing what exactly he is capable of
I find curious how G-Man's entrance resembles to Gordon standing in front of the vortigaunts at the beginning of HL1
My god. Eight Vorts just to hold him back. I'm even more afraid of GMan now.
Have you played Half Life Alyx? If so, this scene makes a lot more sense.

Man, the vortigaunts really cut off the G-Man's speech like that
I'm pretty sure this is the reason for G-Man to offer Alyx that job in HL:A. He obviously doesn't like what the vorts are doing here.
God damn this scene is amazing

1:11 Love that little smirk he gives them like "Oh, that's cute. Anyway-"
Before he looked the other way to see he's surrounded.
Man, even the opening sequence went so hard. It's still epic almost 2 decades later!
A theory of mine:
G-man had accepted a certain offer for gordon freeman's services, and here he was in stasis. G-man was going to take gordon out of stasis, but the vortigaunts prevented him from doing so. So after half-life 2 had ended, alyx would have died and gordon been moved to another world for some task, had the vorts not been there.
No.
@@finestfragments what makes you say this?
@@W_Wolfie put gordon into not out of
@@finestfragments That's also plausible, yes. My younger self probably saw the black background and just assumed "stasis dimension".
Ah so G-Man wanted to get Freeman to do his bidding, but the Vortigaunts stepped in and prevented him, then teleported Freeman away.
"We'll see, about that!"
*Aggressively adjust tie*
If gman isn't the final boss of half life 3 I'm done

The one thing that I'm not looking forward too in Half-Life 3 /episode 3 is the graphics. The previous-gen graphics of Half Life 2 were in my opinion, quite a unique characteristic of the game. :(
Toastyplace
I'd be totally fine with it being the same graphics as HL2 Episode 2. Honestly they were upgraded to such a degree that they still look fantastic, they really are still quite advanced to this day. It might not be totally obvious sometimes but just taking a second look can be stunning.
***** Exactly, in my opinion, the game won't be the same without them.
Toastyplace
I guess we'd have to see what they put out, but hopefully they know there is a certain look and style to Half-life that they will retain.
The first time we see him show emotions, and the emotion he shows is pure anger.
I've always assumed Gman stands for government man, and he represents a different transdimensional government which opposes the combine.
"What is it exactly that you've created? Can you name even 1 thing?"
Hope.
Thats why gman hired alyx and fired gordon because gordon was too powerful and gordon has the vortigaunts in his side btw half life 3 is confirmed

Eli Vance survives so Half-Life 3 is confirmed.
Valve: We'll see about that..
2 dislikes are from Wallace Breen and G-Man
Its a shame that we probably wont see another half life game, at least for a very long time. I genuinely hope this is expanded in some form at some point, because it seemingly signified a much deeper plot thread that was never explicitly shown throughout the rest of Half-Life
You were right my friend. You were right.
So how did you feel about Half Life: Alyx?
we did not see... about that...
Tell me, doctor freeman, if you can. You have destroyed so much. What is it exactly that you have created? Can you name even one thing? I thought not.
One thing I love about the Vortigaunts is that despite them knowing Gordon Freeman is under the control of Gman they see him as a prophet of sorts and seek to save him from the Gman as he has saved them.
You think they will free Alyx from G-man like this too?
“Nice house you got here, Mr. G. Thanks for the guy.”
I feel like G-man is Gordon from the future.
Vortigaunts are awesome.
Every time I see the vortigaunts it makes me very happy
Basically G-Man hates Vortigaunts
I know this video is old and nobody's gonna see this, but i think gman is like a bounty hunter, I mean, YOU (gordon freeman) are the bounty hunter, the gman himself only offers your "services", probably the vortigaunts "hired" gordon to free the world from the combine, and when the job was "done" (destroying that tower in city 17), the gman came to take his "marvelous world changing tool" away, but gordon was not done, at least is what the vortigaunts think, so they took gordon by force to finish the job, if HF2 EP 3 existed, probably the combie will hire another tool from the gman, Adrian Shepard, to counter Gordon's effort to free the world

all i can get from this is gman tries putting us back in stasis and the vordigaunts stop him and take us and alyx away
Imagine if some purple dudes just showed up and stole your big orange crowbar wtf
A group of Vortigaunts saved Gordon Freeman from the G-Man and Alyx Vance from certain death at the beginning of the game.
Why are the Vortigaunts stopping Gman from speaking to Gordon?
They are freeing Gordon from Gman's grip. The thing is, Gordon actually freed them from the Nihilanth's control in HL1, so it seems like they try to help him anyway they can. It's really awesome how they used to be our deadly enemies, now their our most powerful and one of our closest allies.
The first time valve "retconned" an ending (but nobody noticed)
No sé el por qué pero me encanta el sonido de presentación del episodio 1 (los primeros 10seg), aunque dure poco transmite perfecto la situación a verse en esta expansión

g man got pissed
Spoiler alert for Alyx
Who's here after Alyx's ending? The Vortigaunts were used to keep G-Man imprisoned for the Combine. That ties up so neatly to Episode 1's opening
After everything gordon has conquered, the player always feels Powerless against the G-Man he's the one thing gordon could never take on
Let me make this clear. It took 8 VORTIGAUNTS TO HOLD THIS “MAN” BACK.
Angry G-Man is genuinely intimidating
Woah... Epistle 3's ending is like EP1's intro but the roles are reversed, Gordon left to die and saved by Vortigaunts whereas Alyx is taken by Gman, of course she isn't taken from Gman like Gordon was.
