    Amazing video once again. I spotted heritage unit #8114 on the Brunswick District West Bound from Brunswick. Pretty crazy how I saw the same exact engine as you!

      Thanks. Yes, it's funny when different people see the same engines or even entire trains at different places..

    Wow, I see you'd see double heritage units in this video. The trains are:
    169 Manifest with Original NS Unit #8114 trailing fourth
    74W Coal Train with Reading & Northern Unit #1067 leading

    Hey great videos man, I'm from Chattanooga. How do you figure out the trains I.d.'s?

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01 8 лет назад

      Thank you!! Cool, you're a lucky guy! I wish I could spend more time in Chattanooga. The trains typically call the signals they pass on radio and mention their symbol. With a scanner, one can listen to their chatter and identify them.

    After googling it, I learned that Unit 861 @21:36 is called a "slug". What is it's purpose? Crewless power? Never seen one before.

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01 7 лет назад +1

      At slow speeds, as is typical for yard jobs, heavy trains require heavy traction effort of the power units. Slugs have no diesel engine, but each axle has a traction motor (like the lead locomotive). So, effectively, the traction effort is distributed over more axles leading to more adhesion, which allows smoother operation. Of course, one could also use a consist of locomotives, but slugs are less expensive.

    Interesting engines. Some of the yard engines are quite a bit different from the train engines. Are these switchers or something else? What are the round things on top of some?

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01 8 лет назад

      These engines in the yard are switchers, some with slugs. They can be controlled remotely.

    • @mbmars01

      I only remember that they had some trouble with a remotely controlled engine in the yard that day.
