The artist Jean Gerard known professionally as Moebius draws with sensuous magic. His life story is amazing. Fun fact: Devil May Cry began life as a Resident Evil game. The Capcom producers were smart enough to make it it's own thing instead of either scrapping it or making an inappropriate sequel.
Hard to say if Jodorowsky's Dune would have failed if he had secured the funding to begin production... From some of the Giger illustrations and Moebius story boards, it really felt like it had the potential to compete with 1982's Blade Runner to become the greatest sci fi movie ever .... ... but of course its all about the execution, since the lack of funding means they never began production at all, we can only guess how good or bad it could have been but never be sure of it ...
Jodorowsky's Dune would have been much, much more. The spiritual mindset & auora he was pouring into the movie, the absolutely incredible artwork, the amazingly deep and profound themes & styles he makes his movies with, the way he wanted the movie to be (or at least start) a spiritual awakening of the masses (something we still desperately need to this day), the delving into the subconscious, dark, trippy, psychedelic yet incredibly profound & meaningful tones & themes he would have brilliantly conveyed, etc. etc. Jodo's Dune would have been a masterpiece among masterpieces and, yes, as you said, am absolutely amazing "stoner" flick.
As much as I like Jodorowsky's passion, let's be honest: it might have been a fantastic jaw dropping film, HOWEVER, it would NOT have been Frank Herbert's book Dune.
Fifth element is like the Incal because Moebius worked on both, and it was a homage to Heavy Metal's approach to Sci-Fi. Gimenez is also a wonderful artist! Glad to see you picking up the torch for these classics.
Not that much of a fan of the Incal, but I love "Before the Incal". It takes some high concepts that feel just thrown against the wall in the Incal and turns them into working parts of a credible setting. And that book is really, really dark - in colourful way. (But admittedly no Moebius art.)
A lot of people may have “ripped off” Jodorowski, but he’s borrowing (expanding on?) a whole lot of Carl Jung’s ideas. That said, this sounds awesome, I definitely want to read it.
The thing is that most people weren't visualizing these things before Jodo. He gives credits to his zen master from Mexico and Jun's work. He doesn't walk around saying he invented this, Visually he gets ripped off all the time. With out his visual work the others wouldn't exist.
Yeah, you totally should read The Incal. I might be a little partial since I grew up reading it but it's really a great book, and as others said, has amazing art.
He knows how to steal, as most artists do. I admire the man but in the Dune documentary I cringed every time he said he tried to do something “visionary” and “hallucinatory” as never seen before which 2001 already DID.
I had no idea jodorowsky made graphic novels, so thank you for making this video and the most recent one about metabarons that lead me here, I love his films so this will be right up my street
The movie drew a LOT of story elements, not just a few art style points. It also pulled a bunch from the Heavy Metal movie. The real issue is that we don't have a real good definition of this kind of derivation, and how to credit those that you are drawing from. You cannot copyright or paten an idea. Everything we create, we do so with some kind of source of inspiration. But, if we admit we got an idea from someone else's work, then our work is deemed of less worth, and that the originator should get more credit, despite there being no legal reason for this. So, we hide our influences, and pretend that is was all our original ideas.
@@jeffeppenbach Funny thing is, the Heavy Metal franchise also originates from Moebius in a way, since he's the co-creator (with Philippe Druillet) of the original french Métal Hurlant magazine.
EVERYTHING comes from Moebius. The Fifth Element is literally Moebius fanfiction. Besson brought in Moebius and Mezieres (of Valerian) specifically saying to them, I think Hollywood stole your stuff wihout crediting you so I want to hire you directly. Blade Runner is the same, Moebius fanfiction! Ridley Scott wanted Moebius to design it but Moebius was busy. So he did a cinematic fanfiction of the Moebius style from 'The Long Tomorrow', a Heavy Metal strip he did with Dan O'Bannon. Moebius is the origin of cyberpunk like Akira as well as Star Wars.
@@jeffeppenbach George Lucas is interesting, he gets accused of ripping off but he actually pays homage to his forebears in very direct but subtle ways. One of the most interesting is that he slyly credits Moebius as the origin of Star Wars. It's hidden in plain sight, right at the start of ESB. That probe droid is straight out of Moebius's The Long Tomorrow, he paid Moebius to use it. That's him opening ESB by giving credit to Moebius for inspiring it all! But he also has forewords in Moebius art books and stuff like that, he always helped the artists who inspired him. Kurosawa is another guy he helped when Star Wars was a hit, many of Kurosawa's greatest films were made after Lucas helped resurrect his career.
@@jeffeppenbach Regardless you can say ideas are not owned by they to a degree with sheer copyright legality. There's artists especially attempt to pull narratives from lesser known works.
LOL, I love Jodo but you're not wrong. His many other graphic novels never quite reached the heights of his collab with Moebius, who was also a storyteller in his own right and did many solo works, including a famous Western series (Blueberry) under his real name Jean Giraud.
@@ScottPutnamART I have read many of his comics and watched many of his movies, what I write is my opinion, it`s ok to disagree, but my judgement is well informed.
@@ScottPutnamART Nobody said otherwise. The Incal is just Jodo's masterpiece, and judging by Moebius' solo work, I have a strong feeling that the latter contributed significantly more than just the art on this one.
@@mugwump7049 everyone's better with moebius. But just look at Jodo's other non moebius stuff like the bouncer, metabarons, borgias ect. You can even look at the new metabarons second cycle where Jenny frison takes over writing it's nowhere near as good
Is she still around? Followed her for a bit but she seems a little bit off - as if she honks she is the center of the universe or something. Got bored pretty quickly.
Have you read Silver Surfer: Parable? If you haven't, I *highly* recommend it. Moebius' art in the story is absolutely gorgeous and Stan Lee's writing is superb! If you liked Moebius' art in The Incal, I think you'll just love this story.
Re-reading The Incal, you can really see how Moebius just had a bunch of really cool set-pieces and was trying to string them along in a narrative - which is oddly thematic to the actual story of John DiFool's journey.
I finally finished reading The Incal a few weeks ago and it was a life altering experience. It’s probably the greatest comic book that I’ve read and I have read many. Thanks for recommending this.
1:47 “Good artists copy; great artists steal.” -- attributed to Pablo Picasso, among others Unfortunately, once art becomes big business and corporate lawyers get involved and start trying to enforce notions of “Intellectual Property”, the art kind of dies ...
The Incal is good, however, The Metabarons is a much closer and more obvious shadow-adaptation of Dune. I would strongly recommend reading it as soon as you can, it's absolutely awesome.
The Incal looks really interesting. You should totally review the other graphic novels too, and any others you think we might find interesting. Keep em coming! Might have to play around with the lighting a bit, or find some solution to the issue with the glossy pages shining in your vids. You're a clever guy though, I'm sure you'll figure it out 😊💜
I really would like to see that storyboard book they made for Jodorowsky´s Dune as a art book release - I think there would have been some great imagery in Jodorowsky´s version, although, as he admitted himself, it would have been a completely different story.
People are saying that it got ripped off by Fifth Element because Moebius and Jean Giraud are one and the same person! Jean Giraud worked on the production design for Fifth Element and he also is Moebius who draw the Incal! No excuse for Star Wars though!
I love Jodorowsky and haven't gotten around to reading his graphic novels. I need to check it out, I relate to themes very much. Great review! Please review more of Jodorowsky's graphic novels!
So you're saying that you're as bad with spelling as you are with women? Also, it's not involuntary, it's a persecution complex with a self-reinforcing unhealthy community.
3:15 The two sisters “Animah” and “Thanatah”. One name means “life”, the other means “death”. Oh, and don’t forget John DiFool’s inseparable companion, his pet Concrete Seagull. Not the bravest of creatures, but with some resources of its own when it comes to the crunch.
Jodorowsky used the ideas he'd have added to Dune. Thier loss not letting him make such a film. Indeed the Incal universe, really all Jodo's graphic novels are amazing.
It would've been incredible had it been made, but you do strike at a good point though you may not have realized. But sometimes when we learn about some creative work we initially catch glimpses and pieces of it before consuming it officially, and these initial leanings can be incredibly evocative, inspiring ideas and other avenues to explore, and sometimes this can be more valuable than the full thing itself.
I remember watching the incal on tv. There was this tv show in france, somewhat mid 80's, they were literally showing the whole comic with a voice over. There was also "Jonathan" by Cosey.
I'm so glad you pointed the Attack of the Clones (and basically all Prequel Trilogy) as an obvious example of homaging or ripping-off Jodorowsky, as well as Besson's Fifth Element! Many, many artists, directors, writers...were and are inspired by Jodo's masterpieces and, you know - credit should be given to the old master! And yes, it would be great to see the review of another Alejandro's masterpiece, Before the Incal, this time beautifully illustrated by Serbian maverick artist Zoran Janjetov. Final Incal is also very good, albeit different, maybe because Ladronn's different visual style. And let's not forget After the Incal, a sort of first attempt to finish the Incal saga with Moebius again as an artist! This is the work that some consider a failure (Jodo included), but is also a notable entry in Jodoverse.
Im a huge fan of jodorowsky and i loved the documentary for dune. But this review made me buy the incal and after reading just the first quarter of the book i boight the final incal. Truly amazing

I'd say that Incal wasn't Dune "inspired". It was his fever dream and is deeply metaphysical in it's fool's journey. I love Mobius's work. It is metaphorical, satirical, and often very deep while it's deep taste for the bizarre and uncomfortable is something I enjoy. Now, the Metabarons are definitely based off of Dune. I also love Metabarons.
"Jodorowski's arrogance" YES. I couldnt agree with a better word to describe him. However i've been wanting to read the Incal sooo bad! I don't know if I can ever come to respect Jodo or to forgive him in a sense, but the incal could be the first step toward. Thanks for your honest opinion Quin, i'll give some thought.

The
thing is that most people weren't visualizing these things before Jodo. He gives credits to his zen master from Mexico and Jun's work. He doesn't walk around saying he invented this, Visually he gets ripped off all the time. With out his visual work the others wouldn't exist.
It's got amazing art.
Considering Jung's idea are pseudoscientific, one could say he fully realized them by turning them into outright fiction.
I had no idea jodorowsky made graphic novels, so thank you for making this video and the most recent one about metabarons that lead me here, I love his films so this will be right up my street
So glad you like The Incal. The whole "Jodoverse" is good, but The Incal and The Metabarons are insanely great.
Metalbarons is AWESOME! Simply magnificent!
I'm glad you liked it. Grew up with comics like that.
Seems this is going to be a movie too. Announcement about the director on Thursday according to Jodorowsky.
Moebius worked in The Fifth Element, so it's not exactly a rip-off
The movie drew a LOT of story elements, not just a few art style points.
Jajaja good one, The Incal is mainly Moebius making sense of Jodos ramblings
LOL, I love Jodo but you're not wrong. His many other graphic novels never quite reached the heights of his collab with Moebius, who was also a storyteller in his own right and did many solo works, including a famous Western series (Blueberry) under his real name Jean Giraud.
You're wrong. Jodorowsky wrote many good comics that didnt have moebius.
You can even look at the new metabarons second cycle where Jenny frison takes over writing it's nowhere near as good
I would love to watch you and Comic Book Girl 19 talk.
I’ve seen them chat a bit on Twitter.
she's old news.
Is she still around? Followed her for a bit but she seems a little bit off - as if she honks she is the center of the universe or something. Got bored pretty quickly.
Danika is so fun! His content reminds me of her early stuff. She's going through a metamorphosis currently and I am here for it!
Yeeeeeees!!!!!! 😁🥰😁🥰😁
Have you read Silver Surfer: Parable?
If you haven't, I *highly* recommend it. Moebius' art in the story is absolutely gorgeous and Stan Lee's writing is superb!
If you liked Moebius' art in The Incal, I think you'll just love this story.
Please do more of these!! Jodorowsky is one of my idols and hardly anyone is doing in depth analysis vids about his GNs
Man, happy to have found this video...I'm excited to check out more of your content...Thanks!!!!
Respect for continually bringing new material to the discussion.
Re-reading The Incal, you can really see how Moebius just had a bunch of really cool set-pieces and was trying to string them along in a narrative - which is oddly thematic to the actual story of John DiFool's journey.
Thank you for giving me another series to check out.
Quinn, this style of presentation from you is my favorite.
I finally finished reading The Incal a few weeks ago and it was a life altering experience. It’s probably the greatest comic book that I’ve read and I have read many. Thanks for recommending this.
Ooh man! The way you hold and browse these graphic novels is hurting me! You barbarian!!
Love your videos though!
Absolutely awesome video. So glad I stumbled upon your channel!
Thanks for reviewing the Incal! Started reading it. It is something else!
1:47 “Good artists copy; great artists steal.”
-- attributed to Pablo Picasso, among others
Unfortunately, once art becomes big business and corporate lawyers get involved and start trying to enforce notions of “Intellectual Property”, the art kind of dies ...
Another Great Video! Thanks, I will DEFINITELY check Out the INCAL!!
You're a clever guy though, I'm sure you'll figure it out 😊💜
Great review, thank you!
Now they're gonna make a movie
I really would like to see that storyboard book they made for Jodorowsky´s Dune as a art book release - I think there would have been some great imagery in Jodorowsky´s version, although, as he admitted himself, it would have been a completely different story.
Thank you. Great review.
Just discovered your channel, absolutely love your reviews. Really well done stuff.👍
People are saying that it got ripped off by Fifth Element because Moebius and Jean Giraud are one and the same person! Jean Giraud worked on the production design for Fifth Element and he also is Moebius who draw the Incal! No excuse for Star Wars though!
Love your passion bro.
I hope you had a good holiday, Quinn.
John DiFool reminds Quinn of Fry
Well now i want the movie to have Deepo voiced by John Dimaggio and have him yell: "But my coarse concrete ass!"
I am surprised with you Quinn. Coreascant in Episode 1,2and,3 came from Foundation.
Just bought my copy. Thanks for the recommendation
Quinn, I 100 percent agreement concerning Jodorowsky's almost "Dune". Love your content man. Keep it coming.
well congratulations you're wrong
I am happy you, too, are a fan of the Incal! I, myself, have done a review for this amazing comic book, as well as ALL of Jodorowsky's films, too!
Great book. Very influential on future sci-fi. Glad you liked it
Great Review !
I love Jodorowsky and haven't gotten around to reading his graphic novels. I need to check it out, I relate to themes very much. Great review! Please review more of Jodorowsky's graphic novels!
Juan Gimenez is a God, rest in peace legend.
No doubt!!
He should always be named in the same breath as Jean Girard and the rest of that era.
He has the best work
so sad he passed away this year! Great artist.
1. Another great video, Quinn.
2. Where’d ya get that shirt?
Thanks for reviewing! Please review other jodo comics when you can :-)
An excellent review
Read about the incel? No thanks, Quinn, I'm living it.
That joke was incalled for
Damned funny.
🤦
So you're saying that you're as bad with spelling as you are with women?
Also, it's not involuntary, it's a persecution complex with a self-reinforcing unhealthy community.
The Incal is so, so good! you've motivated me to reread it now
the artwork reminds me of the most imaginative escapades of calvin and hobbes
I plan to check the incal out - thanks!
I’m sure you’ll be getting some hits again on this video now that the Incal is getting made into a movie. You’re riding the wave Quinn!
Wow. I never heard of either of those books. I will definitely track them down. Thanks for bringing them to my attention.
OMG, I just realized the movie "Inside Out" also ripped off the Incal (the personality traits even use similar colors).
Two of my favourite artists, and yet I've never got round to reading their work together.
Came here after hearing the announcement of Incal the movie
Very cool. Thanks for this. Jodorowsky's ego around his Dune made me write him off.
I’m currently reading The Incal for the first time and I’m loving it. I see why it’s considered a masterpiece!
Jodorowsky used the ideas he'd have added to Dune. Thier loss not letting him make such a film. Indeed the Incal universe, really all Jodo's graphic novels are amazing.
Really enjoyed this video. You found a new subscriber...
The legend of what J’s Dune could have been makes perfect as it is now. Unmade, mystical, pulling on your imagination.
Meobius is just brilliant
It would've been incredible had it been made, but you do strike at a good point though you may not have realized. But sometimes when we learn about some creative work we initially catch glimpses and pieces of it before consuming it officially, and these initial leanings can be incredibly evocative, inspiring ideas and other avenues to explore, and sometimes this can be more valuable than the full thing itself.
I remember watching the incal on tv.
There was this tv show in france, somewhat mid 80's, they were literally showing the whole comic with a voice over.
There was also "Jonathan" by Cosey.
Was Metal Hurlant magazine involved in the production? That's during the time they serialized The Incal (1980-1988)
I’ll be happily waiting for that review on the metabarons
The Incal and Metabarons books are stacked where I can always see them. What great works. There is humour like Tintin, philosophy, action. Just awesome.
this is the only one channel I really like the music background.
I'm happy to see your a member of House Atreides!!!! (I never heard of Incal but sounds interesting & gonna find it!!!)
Look forward to get this graphic novel any time soon, it's was recently republished in my country
Before the Incal is a heart felt story with strange characters and a very original scifi premise. For the time it came out in
I have to say that you crack me up. Almost every video title now is you reading/watching something for the first time and me always staring in shock thinking:" you're only NOW getting to this [fill in title of film/book I read/watched 25+++ years ago]!!??". Then, my shock turns to sadness as this says much, MUCH more about my age than anything else.😢😉😏🙄
Happy to see you're reading those franco-spanish classics maybe you'll like "Les technopères" even though I find it inferior. I recently re-read through "Aldebaran" and "Betelgeuse" by Leo and realized it borrows some elements from Hyperion. If you can find it in English you might like it.
Loves the incal from back in the day
I'd say that Incal wasn't Dune "inspired".
Please do more INCAL, so good!!!!
Love that shirt!!
Great Video! Can you do more comic reviews?
This looks super trippy. I’ll have to check it out.
"Jodorowski's arrogance"
YES. I couldnt agree with a better word to describe him. However i've been wanting to read the Incal sooo bad! I don't know if I can ever come to respect Jodo or to forgive him in a sense, but the incal could be the first step toward. Thanks for your honest opinion Quin, i'll give some thought.
Moebius could draw a happy face on a bar napkin and it would look great. On top of that, you would be able to tell that was drawn by him!
I need to get a copy of The Incal now.
