Is it safe to use the leash like shown @ 1:54 ? I was taught that method when my Weimaraner was young - and it did work to keep them from pulling - but after he had gastric torsion (stomach flipped) and nearly died - I can't help but wonder if it's a good idea to set up the leash to pull on the dog's guts like that...especially for breeds known for gastric torsion like Weimarners and German Shorthairs.
Mind you, my dog didn't go into torsion immediately after using the leash that way - but I've always wondered if it could have been a contributing factor. Anyway, I switched to a gentle leader afterwards.
The stomach is much higher up than you think, you might want to review some anatomy charts. As for GDV, you should talk to your vet about proper feeding conditions (not too hot, not right after or before exercise, proper amounts, potentially avoiding raised feeders or using slow feeders, and preventative stomach tacking is an option too). Most of all, don't purchase a dog whose parents or siblings have had GDV. That being said, sometimes life happens, so have an ER vet picked out and an emergency fund in all cases. And ALWAYS call ahead so the ER vet is ready!
@@KS-ph5ci Thanks for the pro-tips.
I'm not convinced it's a good idea to wrap the leash around the dog's guts to dissuade them from pulling.
