That 5 String Violin doesn't have an overhang to allow for a regular Shoulder rest but you can get a sponge shoulder rest for that Axe & you're ready to ROCK

The fun thing about the 5 String Violin is that you can play both Violin Music & also Cello music an Octave up (like the Bach's 6 Cello Suites from the Barenreiter Edition BA 5217). I'd suggest you get D'addario Helicore 5 String Violin Strings (HE310-5 4/4M) because the Stranded Steel Core takes advantage of the Pickup plus they're a bit thinner to make bowing on the Violin easier. Because it has Machine head tuners, all you need to do is get a stringing crank so you can turn the Handle.

That's why Fretted Bowed instruments now exist.

I like your "rant" at the beginning. I've thought about doing a "my thoughts on music" sort of a video one of these days. I totally agree that there's a certain pretension about classical instruments. The problem with that is... being a virtuoso or playing Beethoven/Bach/Brahms is not everyone's goal. The most important thing is for player to find joy, regardless of the instrument they're playing. Good advice with the tape. I tried to play a cello years ago and couldn't seem to get the hang of the bow. It's definitely a different feel.

Thank you, I completely agree! I think discourse is starting to shift this direction in some parts of the music world, but classical instruments are definitely still on a "pedestal" of sorts.
Bows are tricky! But also really cool. I love bowed instruments so I'm working really hard on my tone, but it's a long journey.

@@MusicalMollyKhan Yeah. I think people are coming around to the idea. BTW, if you check out my latest video (Eastrock kalimba review), I gave you a shout out for your kalimba buyers guide video.

They also have fretted Violins such as the super Fun 7 String Fretted Viper by Wood Violins. The Viper is tuned Bb, F, C, G, D, A, E and has quite a fun range. Frets are ideal for extended range instruments.

@@MusicalMollyKhan Fretted Bowed instruments are way more beginner friendly because they Bypass the need to put tapes on the fingerboard, & the extended range via additional Strings makes transposing much easier too. They should have fractional sized verisons someday because they're actually super easy to learn on. It's true that Electric Guitars are fantastic for begginers due to thinner strings, lower action, as far as Barre Chords go, and also the flatter body is much much more comfortable (Same goes for Electric Bass, Electric Uke, Electric Mandolin, etc). It should also be true for Electric Bowed instruments because they're much easier to handle with, & more comfortable.

@@MusicalMollyKhan Fretted Bowed instruments bypass the need to put tapes on the fingerboard especailly for beginners. They're missing Fretted Acoustic-Electric Bowed instruments. An Acoustic-Electric 7 String Fretted Viper would be cooler cause 1) the tapered hollow body (thin on the treble side, thick on the bass side) allows you to have Clatrity on both sides of the instrument acoustically, 2) the pickup allows you to get a good sound out of all the strings amplified too, & 3) it's very very versatile. They're also working on 9 String Versions with a Low Eb, & also a Super Strong High A (that's now a High B thanks to the .003 gauge plain steel for that B5).

@@MusicalMollyKhan It's cool. It would get cooler if they had an Acoustic-Electric version of the Viper Violins (and the Cobra Cellos too) because imagine playing Rock music in an Unplugged setting as either an Encore or for an Acoustic-Rock Concert. What would you do? Bring your 7 String Acoustic-Electric Viper Violin with you.

I been playing mandolin for 2 or 3 years and inherited a 1920 violin . I restored it with help of my cousin whoever is a Luther. But it sounds great if my friend plays it but I can't get a single good sound it's so odd it sounds like a speaker full of chalkboard scratching. Out of key of course. I feel alot of pressure because I'm considered the musician of fam. I'm really a guy that knows knotting but shapes and some have tytm violin I can't find rhythm
