Can we talk about how fucking good the video is and how well it compliments the song? It's almost like the song was an afterthought. Props to the director. This record is gonna bang hard.
When I heard this song for the first time, especially "how could the world take you from me", I instantly thought about my grandmother. She's not a witch, and is not haunted, but I just found somekind of sense in this question. She had dementia, there was no real contact with her for the past 6 years, that's why I thought she was 'taken' from me. And today she passed away. This was the first song that came to my mind. And I am asking again - how could the world take you from me?
I'm sorry for your loss. My daughter passed at 7 weeks old. No warning. Perfectly healthy when I went to sleep and when I woke up... This was one of the first songs I listened to
My first thoughts about this song was unfulfilled romantic love. A history of a pair of lovers in which something went wrong, not as it should be. Two souls made for each other that got parted by some adversities. Like... Imagine a boy and a girl. Untypical teenagers which fell in love with each other and wanted to live together till the end, create their own family without problems that each of them had, like pathology, poverty, addictions, lack of familiar love, not enough of hope. Both were broken somehow, but instead of fix each other, work hard trying to make the world a better place, realising all dreams, fix everything possible to fix, help everyone and live happy ever after, they both broke each other even more by wrong choices, misunderstanding, fear and those adversities plus people around both of them that contributed to lose their connection. Boy finally left that girl thinking that they won't succeed. Later, that girl died in accident or totally changed herself and started a new life without him, with someone else, forgetting him, but even if he hurt and left her, he realised she was the one and only. After that, he started to destroy himself and everything around him, taking revenge on this world and himself, helping no one, not taking any other chances, hopeless, falling in autodestruction and hate instead of love and joy of life. Now play this song again and imagine what I wrote here. This is hard and sad, but I can relate to that. I must admit here. I have strong depression for long years that reflects on literally everything, always been depressive, waiting for salvation that she was, but my addictions and mental issues lead me to my grave faster each day. She seriously cut herself and wanted take her life. I stopped it. I had no one before and won't have after her. I doubt in us and that was my biggest mistake. We could be perfect, ideal. But I still wonder how is she, wishing her best.
@@ericcartman1425 He literally said he wasn't a fan until this album. Why the fuck would your recommend their oldest shit? Aside from a few songs most of it doesn't stand out as memorable. They grew up.
Whitechapel has truly mastered their craft when it comes to blending together calming ambience to sheer heavy intensity. Hope these guys continue to keep on making insane progress as time goes on. I really cannot wait for The Valley to drop.
Well depends on the band. But whitechapel definitely has always been quite complex when it comes to song writing itself. Their sound has definitely been tempered and matured. i agree

@@NRChambers Yes!! I saw Whitechapel live for the first time a few months back, which is odd because I live about 45 minutes from Knoxville, where they are from. It was an amazing show!
Coming from Phil’s livestream where he discussed the fact that this is about his mother and her own personal demon Mycar that she used to see. This is a look into what torment is really like.
So impactful when you know the story behind the lyrics. The Valley as a whole is just a masterpiece, I connected with this album on deeply personal level.
Revisiting this after Kin, what an amazing journey. Using the imagery of the two albums, this is when The Eye opened for the first time, fixing its gaze on Phil and his family until he left The Valley, when it closed briefly, only to be awakened by Phil’s Kin. What an amazing world Whitechapel has created, an artistic expression of trauma and its aftermath.
Deep dive their stuff man. They started out more in the vein of grindcore influenced deathcore and transitioned into a more groove laden sound that imo is more fun to listen to. However, their first couple albums are sick regardless and catch that old school deathcore sound. Poke through all of their albums if you haven't already. There are hidden gems in each.
I suffer from BBaD depression. Really bad. This song, the witch, the lyrics, the video, the music... Makes me laugh, cry ( actually), and smile at her sweet possession. I hope she finally found peace. Phil. You are a BBrutal, STRONG being. Thank you WhiteCHAPEL.
I have almost lost my family due to drugs and I feel I can relate to this song so much. Thank you for helping me get through this. Metal will always be the most powerful even if we are so judged.
Metal has saved me more than once...when o was younger and very recently...people who don't give it a look in are only halting their human experience...it's such an out let of emotion. Metal TID
As someone who has not shed a thought of White Chapel and most of deathcore, I can confidently say this is amazing. Deathcore will have a resurgence if more bands adopt gentle vocals as such. The video was amazing as well. 10/10 sharing with my metalhead friends.
Im on the schizo spectrum and have certain “characters” in my life, one of which is someone named edward who gives me advice, but i used to have a demonic child who would follow me around and torment me, i relate with this story on a very deep level and it is interesting to hear it talked about in a serious way in my favorite genre of music
Finally a song where the video is exactly what the lyrics is about. Not to mention, it's a very professionally made video at that. Film studios could take notes.
I just don't understand deathcore fans. They seem to think that all serious music should be restricted to low tuned breakdowns, chugging, blast beats, growling and pig squeals. But I don't see what's wrong with a band expanding its sonic palette to include more melody, sections with clean vocals and guitars, and more varied riffs. If anything it only adds to the music, it doesn't remove anything. It's their seventh album, do you really expect the same thing as their first few?
Imo the description you typed is more death metal. I do love the mix of clean vocals with the heaviness of the instruments, it blends nicely. But all death core bands do shit differently. Old ss used to be like that, but with Eddie leading, it's more or less kind of like this. (He can't sing for shit but I still love Doris) in conclusion idk why I wrote this. I agree
I was a fan of Slipknot for a while they were actually one of the first metal bands I listened to but they seemed to have lost their emotion in some of their newer songs unlike Whitechapel who seem to be embracing it
There's nothing wrong with it when it's done well. I don't think all of the people who hate on the style change dislike those new elements - some definitely do - but for me at least, the issue is that they've tried to do new things at the expense of watering down the heaviness of the music. You can have brutality and melody in the same song; a lot of bands do it well, and Whitechapel has done it well in the past (let me burn, diggs road). A good example here is the transition from the clean vocal break into the guitar solo. Great melodic buildup to a long solo with heavy riffs. But I personally don't like how the solo transitions back into the chorus with cleans and harsh vocals together, because the cleans sound really cheesy to me there and it takes all the weight out of the sound.
“How can the world take you from me” is a incredible line I think the transition from melodic-ish to deep growl emphasis of the word me is filled with tons of emotion felt by Phil! Couple that with the video is bone chillingly good! Great work Whitechapel... great work! \m/ \m/
My father shot himself due to mental illness. Every single line written has a meaning to me, wether it’s from his view or his mother’s. It became my favorite coping song since it’s out. Much love.
This is the darkest music video I’ve ever seen. Knowing this video is dedicated to his Mother who died after an addiction makes it even more depressing and sad. The video about his dad made he sad too, but this video made me ball my eyes out.
Not only that but the "demon" in the video is supposed to represent his step dad that I think abused the both of them (correct me if I'm wrong) and got his mother on drugs aswell
@@Nosh69696 no. that's incorrect. I applaud the man who portrayed he Demon here, such a masterful actor. Every frame he appears in and shows emotion for, even for a split second, you can see it all. The way he seems to show compassion, but keeps screwing her mind, then enjoys and celebrates the suffering, and the smirk in the end...fantastic portrayal of mental illness, the demon that sits inside your head, an all-consuming predator with a thousand faces, often friendly to make you more vulnerable. This cinematography resonates with me a lot Massive respect to the band, the actors, the director!
Long time Whitechapel fan. Own all their previous albums. I listen to bands such as: Hypocrisy, Dimmu, Pantera, Rammstein, Rings of Saturn, Job For A Cowboy, etc. Phil's clean vocals are my favorite part of this song.
This song got me in my feels. The way the video portrays his mother fighting off her demons really really hits home with me. And the last chorus, the guttural with the lyrics "how could the world take you from me? They all deserve to burn with me.." into the clean guitar... fuck.
I lost my mother to suicide in September of 2022. She suffered from severe mental illness and in her last months we think she was in psychosis. “How could the world take you from me, they all deserve to burn with me.” Hits me so hard when I listen this. Interesting Fact: Produced once again by Mark Lewis (CANNIBAL CORPSE, THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER) and featuring artwork by Branca Studio, "The Valley"'s title is a reference to the part of Hardin Valley (west of Knoxville) where vocalist Phil Bozeman grew up. Set against this backdrop, he approaches his subject matter unflinchingly, building upon everything that came before, making it clear that he has survived that which he was forced to endure and is not afraid to confront it. "Phil has been upfront in his lyrics in the past about hardships he endured in his life as a child, and I believe with this record we tried to paint a better picture of that," says guitarist Alex Wade, who alongside his bandmates, stands a hundred percent behind everything their vocalist has to say. "I feel our music is Phil's release from his past, being able to get it out and speak about it, and hopefully anyone who hears it that may have gone through similar experiences can find some release in it as well." Anyone throwing "The Valley" on for the first time will immediately recognize it as the work of WHITECHAPEL, yet, as has been the case with each release, there is also evolution in play. "Sound-wise, it's all over the place," Bozeman states plainly. "There's aggression, and then you're hit with ominous and emotional guitar riffs. It's mean, but then transfers to soft and inviting. It's a whirlwind of emotions throughout." On an Instagram Live Story on February 27th, 2019, Phil Bozeman explained the meanings of the currently released singles from The Valley. Phil explained that the “demon” mentioned in the title is not referring to his stepfather, but instead referring to a personal demon named “Mycar” that Phil’s mother wrote about in her journal. She suffered from a myriad of serious mental issues, and Phil said that she was diagnosed as having 34 different personalities, which would all appear in her personal journal that she kept (even the handwriting would change with each personality). This song specifically references that demon “Mycar”. Phil showed and read excerpts from his mother’s journal, focusing on a couple of lines where his mother explained that a demon named “Mycar” would sexually assault her in her bed, taking the physical form of Phil’s father. The title of the song actually comes from a line in his mother’s journal, where she describes the sexual assault: “It takes on Gary’s bluish-gray body, a real physical body, a dead body raping me - a devil raping a witch”. (Gary was Phil’s father’s name). The lines in the song’s pre-chorus are also taken from her journal: “The incubus, it happens, no matter where I sleep in this bed, in my place, in his place, it still happens. I thrash from side to side yet it still happens. It hurts so bad, again and again. Burn the bed, yes, burn everything. Liar.”
Personally, I think one of the best parts of metal is when you have the harsh, guttural vocals and then you have the clean ones. That's just me though. Edit: Damn, that's a lot of likes. Thanks guys!
I agree. Most of my favorite metal bands mix their vocals in a similar way. Whether they have 2 vocalists or just one, I just feel the sound is much cleaner and more emotional at times
Up until now i haven't found a real access point to this band. I like melodic death and black metal and although i like the general style of the band, nothing ever realy clicked. This song breaches the gap.
You would probably like A New Era of Corruption, their third album. It's before Phil started experimenting with clean vocals but I think the lyrics are better and more thought-provoking. Start with End of Flesh and Single File to Dehumanization.
Just discovered this band and I'm glad. Because it seems they reached a new peak with their style. Clean vocals and melodies. Who knew 🤷♂️. Best metal I've heard in years.
Lol at the people wasting their time and energy arguing and complaining about genres or clean vocals rather than... I don't know, just listening and enjoying the music.
And this is why Whitechapel has and will always be one of the leading bands in deathcore. Phil has always been a monster vocalist, their instrumentals are fucking gorgeous, and they put heart into every single song and show they do. Whitechapel has been my favorite band since I first heard The Saw Is The Law and I cant get enough of The Valley, and their older stuff is out of this world!

They appear
I remember when the fire was security
Now it’s killing me
A wolf can’t hunt without its prey
So take me to my grave
The demons dance by the fireside
But tonight they migrate to my bedside
Burn the bed
Burn everything
It’s a lie anyway
There’s nowhere left to run
There’s nowhere left for me to be
Without you by my side
How could the world take you from me
They all deserve to burn with me
I cry but if you take a closer look
You’ll see it’s a demon’s eyes
There’s no coming back for me
For my spirit guide is trapped inside my brain
I don’t know who I am
In the name of the father and the holy ghost
Close your gates, lock the doors, there is no hope
What has the world come to
When a demon defiles a witch
Nobody trusts a word I say
I can’t erase these memories
But I will erase humanity
A beautiful mix of sorrow/regret and anger.

@@Skepsis710 you cant name anything I haven't listened to already bro, but I see what your saying. All im getting at is maybe after all this experimenting he will want to go back to the roots. Most bands just stray further and further but I don't believe Whitechapel will be one of them.
Can we talk about how fucking good the video is and how well it compliments the song? It's almost like the song was an afterthought. Props to the director. This record is gonna bang hard.
Paul Sklar man I thought it was from a movie, I’m here scrolling through the comments looking for the name of it lol
This was one of the first songs I listened to
I am so sorry. I’m currently about to lose my fiancée with all the fighting and I don’t want the world to take her away

"How could the world take you from me... They all deserve to burn with me"
I feel this on a deep emotional level. Fucking bravo Phil & Co.
Just find out this band. Was I living under a rock? They kick ass

I agree
In slipknot they mix clean vocals with metal. They aren't really death metal but it's what brought me here lmao
This is more melodic death metal than anything.
“How can the world take you from me” is a incredible line I think the transition from melodic-ish to deep growl emphasis of the word me is filled with tons of emotion felt by Phil! Couple that with the video is bone chillingly good! Great work Whitechapel... great work! \m/ \m/

KingdomCum That’s true. His step dad was a demon, he got his mom hooked on drugs.
This cinematography resonates with me a lot

"I feel our music is Phil's release from his past, being able to get it out and speak about it, and hopefully anyone who hears it that may have gone through similar experiences can find some release in it as well."
Anyone throwing "The Valley" on for the first time will immediately recognize it as the work of WHITECHAPEL, yet, as has been the case with each release, there is also evolution in play. "Sound-wise, it's all over the place," Bozeman states plainly. "There's aggression, and then you're hit with ominous and emotional guitar riffs. It's mean, but then transfers to soft and inviting. It's a whirlwind of emotions throughout."
On an Instagram Live Story on February 27th, 2019, Phil Bozeman explained the meanings of the currently released singles from The Valley.
The title of the song actually comes from a line in his mother’s journal, where she describes the sexual assault:
“It takes on Gary’s bluish-gray body, a real physical body, a dead body raping me - a devil raping a witch”. (Gary was Phil’s father’s name).
The lines in the song’s pre-chorus are also taken from her journal:
“The incubus, it happens, no matter where I sleep in this bed, in my place, in his place, it still happens. I thrash from side to side yet it still happens. It hurts so bad, again and again. Burn the bed, yes, burn everything. Liar.”
Those clean vocals always get me! I get chills EVERY SINGLE TIME. 🫶🏼❤️
