    That analysis on Mishima was quite the eye-opener, while I definitely saw that nastiness in his character, I feel that I kinda overlook his character sometimes due to his basic character design.

    I feel as though you should have mentioned the corner the writers trapped themselves in and how it effects not just Hifumi but also the other Confidants' progressions.
    Because of an end game reason, it is important that all Confidants know that you're a Phantom Thief. So the game requires all Confidant routes have a confrontation with the heart(s) of someone who harmfully effects the lives of your confidant.
    Which obviously has the worst effect on characters like Hifumi who don't actually need that intervention. Forcing the in game interactions to go a certain was when they don't make sense to.

    The way you described Mishima's character is really interesting and I had never really looked at it that way. And I agree with Iwai being one of the best confidants, him and Sojiro make this game's confidants for me.

    As I mentioned on the previous video. The overall message of Persona 5 isn't rebellion, but individualism and changing one's own cognition to better change the world.
    During the Kaneshiro arc I found myself more and more questioning why everybody seemed to be getting on Makoto's case. She's a student, student council president, but still a student, and yet she kept getting treated like utter shit by everybody, PT members included.
    So I couldn't exactly bring myself to hate her for her actions, especially knowing what was going on behind the scenes, but I do think it is a bit ironic that somebody who was so focused on justice would resort to blackmail. Then again, clearly it isn't something she wanted to do and as I played through the game, I felt there was a more realistic immaturity to her. She's 17 and even as a student council president I would expect her to act 17, even if she was a bit more mature than the average 17 year old.
    One thing that bothers me with these sets of videos is that you don't understand what the game was trying to convey through it's requests and confidants. I'm not saying they are all perfect, but here are my thoughts on the ones you mentioned.
    Hifumi's arc is about relying on your own strength to fight even if it means losing. Hifumi has talent sure, but facing against opponents who were paid to lose would not improve them. Shogi isn't an easy game, and even top players lose from time to time. Hifumi's mother was using Hifumi for money by making her famous.
    Like many of the confidants, you see an adult using a child for their own selfish gain. It may not qualify as abuse, but this isn't a healthy relationship. It also isn't healthy for Hifumi who may not be able to rely on these fixed matches forever. So when Hifumi finds out her mother wanted her to lose the match on purpose, she refused.
    She wanted to put forth her best efforts even if it didn't bring victory. Some might say she should have won, but that would have undermined her confidant arc, her losing at that moment reaffirmed her feelings, that she was not as good as she thought she was, but that she was going to get better.
    Afterward she starts over in the league. It may seem like her arc isn't over, but that's how life is sometimes. At the end, she now has the strength to stand on her own and improve. Believe me that not all arcs need to end with some sort of big victory. Sangatsu no Lion (also deals a lot with Shogi) did this thing too. Sometimes the victory is in growing and Hifumi definitely grew.
    About Iwai and your complaints with how the choices work. That's how it has always been. Your rank with a social link or confidant is based on how close they feel to you, not the other way around. That said, you still have some room for choices, even if you make the poorest choices it can often be made up for by carrying a persona of the same arcana. There are other options as well to help.
    Other times you can choose between two different choices that both have the same effect. Remember your character is on the one hand a man with no face, a blank slate, or perhaps it is more accurate to say you are a man with many faces, nothing is out of character because the player decides who their character is going to be. Even outside of that, people are made up of many aspects, some may be good, and some may be bad.
    Also, remember you have to have rank 4 guts in order to even initiate his confidant, a person can grow in so many ways, what you took as crass, I took as protagonist trying to be gutsy. Why it works so well is that Iwai can see right through it and it reminds him of when he was younger.
    Lastly, is Mishima's. I can't help but feel you were a little harsh on him. His whole life he was bullied and when he got into highschool he became an abuse victim of Kamoshida. After you take down Kamoshida, Mishima becomes one of your biggest if not the biggest fan and supporter. What really put me off was that afterward, the phantom thieves still sometimes make him the butt of some jokes and your character can be a real asshole to him at times (some of it comes off as harmless, while other times it doesn't imo). This is independent of where you are in his confidant arc. Your comments kind of make it sound like you think he deserved all of this treatment. He never struck me as introverted either. He's usually found hanging out in the city.
    Sure, over time he does become a bit more questionable, like using more extremist terminology, and he starts suggesting you steal the hearts of people most likely innocent for personal reasons. Again, he was bullied his whole life and made to feel like he was useless, so he really wants to be seen as a hero.
    But like with Madarame, you really got too harsh because you meet his shadow. As with the previous video, you have to remember that the shadow represents one aspect of a person, usually the ugliest aspect, Even good people have these aspects. Something you didn't really mention was that he didn't need a forceful change of heart. Just merely talking to his shadow was enough to get him to think on things. The next things he does is save somebody who literally used to bully him by standing up to people who ended up being dangerous thugs.
    As I mentioned in the previous video as well, time spent doing requests is not wasted. Thematically, society is in need of reform, their desires become distorted and if left alone they can become a palace. Everybody request you complete nets you the treasure of somebody, their hearts and if left alone they could cause a lot more trouble down the line. It's a lot easier to nip it in the bud now than to deal with a palace down the line.
    You can wait until you have several at once and save some time, like the time I did 7 requests all at once. Now imagine if instead of encountering somebody on a floor of mementos with just a name you needed to find out their place and distortion as well. It also belittles the struggles the characters are going through as if they aren't important enough, but again why wait until they are, why wait until more are in danger?
    If stealing hearts is good, then you can't ignore people in need, even if their troubles seem too small. Something the confidants do is teach the people how to handle issues going forward. You give them strength and the courage to make the world a better place. To see through society's indolence. You can't do that by just attacking the world's Kamoshida's. The themes of the game are intended to encourage the individuals of society to change their cognition and make the world a better place. Even if one can't summon mythological beings or invade the minds of others, they can still make a difference by having resolve. Not only does exposing the crimes of large criminals do this, but arguably helping even the smallest individuals with their issues, does it plant a seed of change.

    While I agree that it's more of an issue in P5 that the right choices are ones that conflict with the main character's characterization, I don't think this is an issue in P3. In fact, Igor calls out the player for doing this, pointing out that they must be some kind of sociopath to just tell literally everyone what they want to hear regardless of what they may personally think and feel. I think this lampshading contextualizing the social links in P3 in a way that acknowledges some of the hollowness in the relationships in the game, which I think ties with the feelings of emptiness the game tries to convey thematically.

    • @CodexEntry
      @CodexEntry  6 лет назад +11

      It's also lessened in P3 due to that fact that you are just flat out not supposed to like some of the social links. No one actually like Moon or Devil as people (not going to bother remembering names rn), Tower is ethically grey at best, Emperor is an outright asshole in FES, etc. As such, a number of them feel kind of okay to lie to in a way. You don't really respect them and some of them are blatantly using you, so it's only fair for you to use them a bit in return. This is a broader problem in P5 not JUST because sometimes it's contradictory as we see with Iwai, but also because there isn't a single character that you aren't supposed to really like. Those figmas ain't gonna sell themselves, after all.

    I love Mishima's confidant. He is definitely one of the most relatable, since him acting similar to what wronged him to spite it is something most have went through in some degree at least once. Mishima also is does a pretty good job at representing the function and requisites of actions and a role in society, which is often underplayed in media.

    So besides Kek being used today as a joke to make fun of those who think people's race automatically makes them a victim or a victimizer, it apparently was also the name of a lesser known Egyptian god. The fact that Futaba's palace ends up Egyptian themed and she knows about Kek was a nice touch on the localization teams part.

    So I finally played this game recently, and I gotta say Mishima is definitely my favorite confidant in the game. I didn't get to be the deus ex machina to his problems, and actually got to tell him to figure out his problems for himself. That lead to some of the best character development I've seen recently. I have watched all of your P5 vids recently (not in order lol) and agree that the ex machina devices for confidants is problematic, and in collusion to the overall premise of the games themes.

    Great stuff as always man, can't wait for the next part. Glad to hear the gripes about Hifumi. Honestly there are quite a few mementos mini-bosses (both via a confidant and not) that felt thrown in just for some content padding. Considering some of the more intense parts of this game such as the opening portion you'd think they'd have gone further with Hifumi's mother but nah :( It's hard to feel like you're using your powers responsibly. Kawakami's was better in my eyes because it felt like you had no other option with those greedy ass parents. We could've helped Hifumi stand up to her mother or some sort of empowering choice but Kawakami was dealing with increasingly worse blackmail conditions that put her between a rock and a hard place.

    Although I understand doubting the changing of heart of Hifumi's mother, you can really say that about any of the change of hearts. No one's provoking the change, it's just being forced. It's not unlike Yokai Watch blaming Yokai's for all the negative things in the world, the changing of hearts is not something genuine. It's rooted in something extraordinary that doesn't come from the people themselves. I always felt bothered by the idea of it, but it's a video game and it makes sense within the context of the world, so it's not horrible enough to take issue with. That's why I liked Mishima so much, you don't force him to change, he does so upon things being brought to light to him.
    And there's always something worse, ffs the fortune teller and Futaba's heart change requests were worse than Madarame's!

    Iwai was my second favorite character as a whole and my favorite confidant in the game period. I was genuinely upset I could not romance him-- I wanted to be a part of his and his kid's life because the game made me so invested in them, especially since Kawakami was an option.
    I hated the lack of immersion due to the confidant conversation mechanics, and it was what hurt my experience of the game the most in the end. I get really invested in characters based on their in-game actions with the MC and their subsequent growth or otherwise.
    Hifumi was hurt really bad by being relegated to side confidant NPC rather than a main party member, and I was genuinely upset when Royal didn't just bring her original storyline in and replaced her with whatever mess Kasumi was. She could have been so much better utilized and it hurts that she just... seemingly got tossed away. I couldn't like her for that reason, even when I tried to.
    Mishima is, quite to my disappointment, my favorite character. He's treated like ass by everyone, and I hated the way the story used him, but I loved what he *could* have been. He reminded me a lot of myself and the people I picked off the side of the hallway to adopt into my friend groups, even if most of those people harmed me in the long run. I feel like Mishima could have been a very fun addition to the PTs by bringing a cool reference back to P4 and actually forcing him to confront his own shadow, but I'm still okay with what he is, mainly because I can still relate to some of the worst of his character.
    He's such a tragic character, and I love him for it. I also have no taste and understand that, based on my list of favorite characters

    not that thismatters over a year later, but i dont think social links are out of character. if you have different friend groups that dont really mesh, you will talk to them differently.
    but even beyond that, telling everyoe what they want to hear is a choice. doesnt matter if you get rewarded for it. if you want to play the game "right" and answer the way people want to hear, thats your choice the same way it would be if you chose to treat your real friendships that way.
    Alternatively, if you are inserting yourself, you can answer how you want. some people might not like or automatically agree with your response. you wont "get rewarded".
    It fits as both a means of immersion, and doesnt contradict jokers character because playing to someones character to get them to like you a bit more is legitamate.
    if you are talking to a child, you might use more simple wording, or play along with whatever it is they are saying for the sake of their happiness. but you wont talk that way to your boss, its the same idea. you might even uncharacteristically tell your boss things they want to hear to better your standing in the company.

    • @CodexEntry
      @CodexEntry  4 года назад

      tbf I'm not talking about minor code switching between different kinds of people here, I'm specifically referring to the fact that everywhere else in the game Ren is portrayed as being good kid who was in the wrong place and the wrong time and made into a societal villain as a result, something he clearly doesn't not appreciate because it's rooted in injustice, so for him to act like he was always a punk who never cared about people isn't just weird, it's counter to literally everything we know about him. It's like if Ryuji started talking about how much he loved beating people up. Maybe there's a situation where he'd do that, but generally it'd be really weird to see him take that stance.
      And yeah, you can put in whatever answers you want. You can also just let monsters kill you. You can also spend your entire playtime with the game hanging out in Kamoshida's palace. However, the game clearly has a way it wants to be played, as evidenced by the fact that you won't see everything on a single playthrough if you don't play it that way. If you value roleplaying over gameplay efficiency then that's fair, sincerely, do what makes you happy, but I find it a little silly to act like it wasn't deliberately designed to push you towards certain answers that grant a certain characterization of Ren because they tied some really important mechanical progression to those choices. They don't generally give you points for answers they DON'T want you to give because there are, in fact, right and wrong answers as far as the game itself is concerned.

    The bigger problem with Mishima for me was that he immediately talked about censoring the phansite, because negative comments are "bad"....
    And then he was the one behind allowing a poll to determine who the thieves would go after, I honestly thought for a good while that it'd be a great twist if Haru's dad wasn't actually the bad guy, but that angle was quickly thrown away unfortunately. It's a missed opportunity to show how it's wrong to assume group think or rumors are right.
    But Japan still doesn't understand social media, and overly emphasizes working together so what else could I have expected.

    Even though Hifumi was my first romance option I can see your problem with her. Her whole story feels more like an opening to an actual story than a finished story. And it isn't helped that in a story about sexism against women the woman is only there to be saved by the knight in shining armor instead of standing up for herself and at least trying to change something. I think she had way more potential than floofy hair (honestly can't remember her name right now) but I can see why they didn't put her on the team. It wouldn't really fit the escalating nature of the antagonists and especially the connection they all have because let's face it shogi doesn't really come with that much political influence.
    The first time Mishima mentioned "cleansing" the world I was like "ooookay I think we have to stop someone". At times he came across as more vilainous than the actual villains of the story. Probably because he was the monster we created. Had we not stopped Kamoshida Mishima never would have grown into such a megalomaniac.
    Also don't perv on everybodys favourite little sister Mishima.
    Speaking of wich really looking forward to your thoughts on Futaba.

    I'd argue that the protagonists of all persona games (3,4 and 5) have to act in a way that agrees with the characters of the social links' inclinations BECAUSE you're supposedly trying to "understand" their perspective or achana to take it on.

    33:53 Why "Introverted MALE tendencies" I have a problem with both the male part and the tendency part...
    On the male first, It kinda hurts me that the repulsion to the "nice guy" phenomenon is way more recognized then the equally frequent "nice girl" phenomenon, as someone that not only made a friendship, but dated a girl-equivalent version of Mishima It kind of bugs me.
    And on the tendencies part I know you know that introverted people are not all like this but this is like saying that if someone has a certain personality trait they are more inclined to me an asshole, not an much different approach than what the "nice girls/guys" have towards extroverts. As an introvert saying I have a tendency towards being like this is kinda bad, the thing is that everyone knows that extroverted people can be horrible because they don't keep to themselves, I think people reach that conclusion because when a introvert does it, it is a surprise.
    Oh, I'm aware of the possibility that you just said this on the fly because well... he is an introverted male.

    • @CodexEntry
      @CodexEntry  6 лет назад +6

      This is a fair point and one I anticipated. I even thought about bringing it up in the video itself, but realized it would basically derail the whole video. However, I encourage you to listen back to that line again, cause I didn't say 'introverted male tendencies', I said 'the worst of introverted male tendencies'. I know from personal experience that there's a lot of introverted male tendencies that are good and positive, things like introspection, patience, and an eagerness to try to learn about new subjects tend to be things that introverted males value and live by. Likewise however, introverted guys also have a tendency to be socially awkward, self-pitying, and have the delusions of grandeur that we see that in Mishima. Needless to say, this isn't a universal thing by any means, but rather a tendency, IE an inclination someone might have towards a type of behavior that other types of people may not, and these aren't qualities that ONLY introverted guys have by any stretch. Women and non-binary people can and do have them too and it's always shitty to have to deal with people who are like that. Likewise, I should make it clear that every 'type' of person under the sun has their own positive and negative tendencies.
      However, in my experience, both in my personal life as well as the interactions I've had online, being an introverted male tends to lead you to the specific negative traits that we see in Mishima more often than you would be led to those qualities otherwise for an array of reasons that would take to long to go into here. I apologize if it felt like I was calling you or people like you out, cause that wasn't my intention. Being introverted isn't good, but it's not bad in anyway either. It just is what it is, if that makes sense, just a single piece of what makes up any person like whether or not you like pizza more than hamburgers. It's just a single trait among dozens and that's worth remembering imo.
      I've been an introverted guy my entire life, I say all of this from experience, it's the main reason I felt comfortable saying it in the first place. I've had those traits, I've seen those traits, and I STILL have to deal with them from all sides, internally and externally. However, I also know from personal experience that you can grow past them, but in order to do that, the person in question has to accept that they have those feelings and that's why I bring it up here. I've known a million Mishimas, fuck, I've BEEN a Mishima, someone who thinks people don't like them because they're quiet, or cause they're not traditionally masculine, or nerdy, or whatever, when the reality is that people don't like them because they're fucking assholes who don't seek to bring anything good into the lives of people around them. And that's what I mean when I say the worst of introverted male tendencies, because I know from first hand experience how someone like that will use those qualities as a shield from self growth and from forming genuine connections with people because I've done it myself and I've seen it more times than I can count and, for my money, that's EXACTLY the kind of mind set Mishima's arc is meant to criticize.
      So yeah, I hope that makes sense, and I hope you can see why I didn't bring it up in the video cause that was like 500 words that had fuck all to do with persona.

    • @daherleonardi
      @daherleonardi 6 лет назад +2

      Hahaha Yeah you did well not letting this into the video. But I still don't think that is a tendency of introverts but actually an tendency of shyness which are very different things on a psychological level, shyness appears equally on extroverts and they show the same tendencies, I know it is kinda weird thinking that extroverts can be shy, I had the same surprise in class haha. But as you may know being an introvert just means that social interactions tire you out.

    I personally wouldn't consider Persona 5s combat particularly good, let me explain why. The gameplay itself feels amazing, the first time you enter a battle everything just feels so tight and polished, with that kick-ass battle theme, it gives an amazing first impression, unfortunately that doesn't last for too long. it kinda reminds me of Chrono Trigger in terms of how good it feels, the difference is that Chrono Trigger is a short game where the enemy variety and bosses are so cleverly designed that it 's always interesting, never a battle feels annoying to play, so in CT not only the core mechanics are good but the level design/enemy design and variety are just as good which keeps the game always interesting, nothing is put there just because, everything has a purpose (damn Chrono Trigger is just such a perfect game, the fact that I'm even comparing these two just says good things about Persona 5), Persona 5 on the other hand is a 100plus hours game, so while I do agree that the core gameplay feels really good, the mechanics and enemy/level design are not deep nor good enough to keep a game this long interesting throughout the entire play-through, the combat gets old way faster than what it should, once you have figured it out it gets tedious. I also feel like there's a lot of padding, the opposite of a game like CT where everything feels meticulous. To be honest I don't think I have to go as far as comparing it to CT to emphasize why P5s combat is not nearly as good as you mentioned.
    This is my first Persona game and from what I got watching these videos P5 is an amazing improvement in terms of level design when compared to the previous games, however I still found myself getting annoyed every-time I had to go through a dungeon, I found the social segments way more engaging and interesting, something odd considering that when I first started the game and didn't know how everything worked it was the opposite, but once I really understood how both the social system and combat worked I found the former to be incredibly more interesting and fleshed out.
    I pretty much agree with everything else but I did want to address this. Thanks for making these videos! They are fantastic.

      I personally don't think it's "meh"; it's just very misunderstood. It's supposed to be the resolution to her character story in the 3rd and 1st palace. Obviously her character still grows cause of events later though.

    • @sead5871
      @sead5871 6 лет назад +2

      I felt underwhelmed with her confidant link when I played for the first time, but now looking back I legitimately think is one of the most interesting ones...
      Maybe her SL is so unpopular because we have to deal with Eiko, with is an pretty annoying character (on purpose of course), but considering that Makoto is aspiring to become head of police, this whole storyline felt like an "preview" of what is coming for her, in an lesser scale. And in hindsight that's actually pretty cool.
      And i honestly think that her rank 7 is one of the best confidant scenes in the game (the one that she talks about her father). Not only her story is very endearing and makes us feel for her and her sister, the moment she realizes that she let herself be vulnerable and her intention was to talk about Eiko was an very strong character moment, it showed that she is one of the most selfless characters in the game..
      (Ryuji is pretty selfless too, but him being an loud attention-seeking idiot kinda hinders it)...

    I don't understand how in the last video you can critisize the MC for helping his confidants and calling that an abuse of power because it helps someone you care about, yet praise Iwai for his Rebellion even though (and because!) it only helps one person.
    You also *keep* talking about 'different levels of abuse'. It's really off-putting. Hifumi's arc is in no way lessened just because her parent isn't assaulting or extorting her. Wtf. There is no 'Scale Problem', only a world-saving complex.

    Me personally, I found P5 to be quite the disappointment. It just came across as one of those games that are all flash and no substance, one that thinks that it is smarter than it actually is. It talks a lot without having any real substance. The initial trailers did fill me with some hope that it would revitalize the series after it had become stale after P4, but no, it just ended up as just the same with a new coat of paint.
