Great video Dave. I think you have the right approach. PS - You had me chuckling at your client impersonation: 'This Dave guy is great. He really knows his product!" Have a great weekend.
Great Video Dave!! Somethings we say while waiting.... "Are you sure you want to do this?" "what are we getting ourselves into" "really don't want to waste his time" "ok, lets see what Dave can do for us, he's been really great so far" :)
A great video. 99% of the salespeople i deal with..are just terrible ..don't know the products or other cars like I do. I help others buy cars (friends, family etc.) The finance office process is the worst at most dealership..due to hard sell on money making packages and extras.
Went to test drive a Niro 2 days ago. Got a rookie kid, I knew more about the vehicle than he did. All I needed to do is look at the sticker on the window. $10,000 in mark ups. When he asked me if I wanted to test drive I told him no need. I will never buy a vehicle from any dealer that add’s on useless mark up items Along with a market adjustment. Salesman means a lot. You sound like one of the few good ones.👍
Having purchased about 20 cars in the past 25 years, I always enjoy a salesman that wants to get to know you. Like where did you grow up, what do we have in common. Do we like similar cars, what do you currently drive, stuff like that really makes me feel more like they want to build a relationship. I've gotten so many of the years where I know more about every car on their lot than the salesman and that really makes me feel like they don't even try to be a good salesman. On another note, just got lucky and got a 2LT Bolt EV in the Bright Blue by calling about 30 dealerships and found one en route that wasn't already sold. Picked it up 2 weeks ago. Love it so far.
A Dave should ask more qualifying questions, 1.have you driven one already 2. What are you driving now. 3 is there a loan in this current vehicle. 4 who is the principal driver. Before the drive, you must find out if they are capable of purchasing. Losts of dreamers, engaged in a picking fantasy, not able to purchase, upside down, bankruptcy etc
Eh, really not necessary. There's time when they come back to find out everything about the client. Plus in my experience by the time clients come back from the test drive they are pretty comfortable with me which makes the rest of the process much easier. Finally, I am fortunate to work in an area where pretty much everybody has good credit and can afford what they want.
Dave, great video. That is the way the sales process should be. I look for sales person who use a very similar process. Keep doing what you are doing. One time I was buying a car the sales man did a similar process and just buy taking me to the car immediately after the meet and give space he earned the sale.
I sold cars at a mom&pop store in Balto. Md. The best way to sell someone a car is NO PRESSURE. We were BHPH so we had to ask how much are you working with for down pmt. Usually not much and usually not good credit, but you always treated them with respect. Very important. Some how most could come up with a down pmt. from relatives or ???. They came back b/c you didn't humiliate them. But we always took test drives with every customer whether BHPH or not.
I appreciate you for making this video, Dave! I’m just starting in the automotive sales industry, and your advice and example is helping me find ways to give customers a great experience. 👍

Wow, my sales people never gave me the car to take out on my own. This was enlighting Dave. I spoke to you in the past on the phone about the chevy bolt euv. I will definitely come see you when I pull the trigger. Keep yourself safe until then.
Just bought a new camaro, it was a great experience. I knew what I wanted, found the car I wanted, called ahead of time to discuss terms, and drove an hour to that dealer. The paperwork was ready when I got there, watched them drive it off the showroom floor, wrote a check, and drove it home. Big difference from the dealers asking me cheesy questions and trying to hard sell me and adding bs accessories.
thanks for this dave. I would love to see more of these types of videos of steps you take when dealing with a client and different scenarios you deal with so I can get an understanding since I just started selling cars for chevy
Some simple rules when I buy a car. Don’t ask for my social # or a credit app. That’s not anywhere part of the equation before I’ve even decided I like the car or agreed to a price. I’ll walk away if repeatedly asked. My name and phone number I’ll provide when I make an appointment to come in. And when I do want the car and we’re trying to find an agreement on price don’t do a 4 square. I’ll walk away. Credit and how I’m going to pay is something I’ll talk with finance in private, not in an open sales floor.

I want to look at another commuter car, the Buick Encore, Kia Soul, and Chevy Bolt. Here is the deal: I do not want to give all my info to the dealer to go on a test drive. When you provide the dealer with the information, I assume they make a soft inquiry.
Great video, Dave! Question: what's your take on the 'to go on the test drive with the customer or not to go' debate? Does your dealer have a set policy either way, or do they leave you flexibility to make that call on a case by case basis?
Dave, you let the client test drive the car without you going with them? I have never been able to do that for a test drive. I enjoy your videos. I looking to see the Equinox EV and the Blazer EV later this year.
Good video. My personal experience is, most sales reps are either far too pushy, or are the other extreme, they completely ignore you initially and you have to ask for help. You are left wondering how on earth their dealership stays in business. There has been the odd time where the rep is good at their job (they had a style similar to Dave), but most of them seem to have a relatively poor knowledge of their product (perhaps due to the high turnover in the industry), appear incredibly lazy, and have pretty bad people skills to boot (interrupting you, correcting you when they are the ones who are wrong, too aggressive etc.) Unfortunately, as a result, most people would prefer to go to the dentist rather than go car shopping.
Many of the salesman never even bother going over the dam car. They assume we know the ins and out of the car. I bought two cars two different brands I wished they can explain some more details on the car
Shouldn’t you start with what their budget is? How much they can afford? You spent all that time getting them fall in love with a car you don’t even know they can afford. But I’m sure you will do what all car dealers do and come up with some creative way to “get them into” the car.
Two reasons why I don't worry about it. 1 - 30 minutes or so of vehicle demo and test drive isn't all that much. plus you are building a relationship. if someone is in a bad position financially and you still give them the time (rather them broom them like most sales people would) who will they remember in the future when their situation is better? They sent the order to GM, but GM must notify them its acceptance of the order. Has GM an obligation to fulfill my dealer's contract with me, or can GM cancel my order?
The order is probably in "preliminary status" and will remain there until the dealer gets an allocation to submit the order for acceptance. If no allocation, no Bolt will be built and you should get your deposit refunded.
