Tank Valve: Air All On Or A Quarter Turn Forward?

- We address a hot button debate item today. Tank valves. Do we open up the valve all the way or do we turn it a quarter turn back? The answer my friends is a definitively AIR ALL ON. And I’m going to prove it to you here in this video. #scubadiving
It happened to me (as I shared with you via your podcast page).
I’m an avid recreational diver and I was diving from a Kona charter boat.
I turned my air all the way on, donned my gear and headed to the stern for my giant stride entry.
Behind my back and without saying anything, the DM turned my air off and then a 1/4 turn on.
Fortunately, my tech diver mentors passed along their ritual of always pre-breathing both regs, while staring at my SPG.
When I saw the needle swing wildly, I knew what just had happened.
I wasn’t happy, but I didn’t want to make a scene.
I pointedly asked the DM to “turn my air back on.” I could tell that he just realized what he’d done. Were I less well-trained, it could have resulted in disaster.
I let him save face by saying “You were just testing me. Weren’t you?”
I trust that he learned his lesson. I learned too. It made my last second prebreathe ritual an absolute.
Outstanding! Great lesson and a graceful way of teaching him this mistake. Thanks for the comment Oren!
Great video! Just found you from the Diver's Ready channel and subscribed! Great stuff!
Thanks Andy!
Yes! Yes! Yes! 1000% agree! Armed with this more detailed knowledge, maybe I can now convince those 'old school' boat captains and dive masters not to check quarter turn. Thank you!
Exactly! Thanks for the comment!
This was painful to watch. As a diver who has been doing this for years I am so glad to hear this and hope it gets out among the community fast.
Thanks for expanding my knowledge base and helping me stop a bad tradition.
Love the beard! Maybe I'll have one someday.
Thank you Zachary. I too did the improper way for years! As they say, good divers are always learning. Thanks for your comment!
I heard that being discussed as an outdated tradition, but not as an security issue. Thanks for letting me know better now. One more subscriber!
Thank you Leopold! Glad you liked it! Greatly appreciated!
Thanks Tec! Just discovered you yesterday on the Big Scuba Podcast. I began as a kid in NJ in the 90's and have seen a lot of change in tech and theory but this one was new. Now I live in South Florida and would love to dive with you guys. Your interview resonated with me.
Thanks so much Socrates!
Awesome explanation and demonstration on this issue..
Thanks so much Paul!!
Thanks I can't wait to go for my first dive in a while
Excellent video Tec! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much!
So enlightening! Thanks, Tec.
Thanks so much Robbie!
Bravo, thank you.
You're welcome!!
Tec that beard is epic!
Yes, its really great sir..its really same thing happened to me..i just opened 1/4 .there is needle is moving...cany understand why?
100% all on
Yep!
Maybe dive operators should use Vindicator Valve Knobs .
Many people bring their own tanks. It would be hard to get used to a product that not many people own. Good thought though!
