If You need external Storage, this Thunderbolt Enclosure is a Build Your Own RAID Solution! This will be an Unboxing, Inspection, Installation and Test! You'd be amazed at some of the uninitiated and ill advised who do not understand ESD susceptibility even after quoting Documentation Advisories or Design parameters of Media specifics such as M.2 NVMe 2280mm vs SATA3 2.5 inch SSD packaging. Those are the ones who are doomed to repeat due to lack of experience. That alone would be a Video regarding handling procedures as outlined by everyone who makes anything electronic. Only yesterday I managed to work on Sorage.
But the same does not work for nothing!
I didn't even put an NVME on it yet because I don't have many and the same ones here in Brazil are expensive.
I'm improving the settings of my note little by little.
Today the note has 64Gb of RAM and 4Tb of discs, 2Tb in NVME from Samsung 980 and a HD 2.5 of 2Tb also from Samsung that I bought here in Brazil.
Jeyi's Storage doesn't connect with the power source they sent me from China, well that's the impression I have.
I looked for the product manual on the internet and couldn't find it to download.
I was thinking about buying a power source here in Brazil. But I'm not sure which font model I buy.
The power source that came with it is written like this:

Good Morning and Happy Holidays! Sounds like You have the wrong Power Supply. According to the Specs: USB-C 33w adapter and 1.5m/4.5ft PD cable are included. Must be paired with a PD 30w power supply to operate properly. Power Supply for US is 110 AC Power. Brazil has 220 volt. Can't read Specs on Unit We have, packed. In process of moving right now. This will be about Software RAID using the JEYI Quad NVMe RAID Enclosure Thunderbolt. Appreciate Your Support!
The poor write performance might be a characteristic of that Sabrent model (and its firmware version) when used with Thunderbolt. You may see better results with a firmware update or different SSD models. For example, the WD SN850 used to have terrible write performance when installed in a Thunderbolt device. The SN850 firmware update released last summer to fix the write performance problem with the AMD X570 chipset also fixed this issue with Thunderbolt.
You mentioned wanting to know what PCIe switch chip is in this device. The Thunderbolt controller is the PCIe lane switch. Like you described, four 1-lane connections, one to each SSD, flow to one 4-lane connection to the PC.

Welcome! Very good point! Could be the Sabrent Drives or could be the Bridge Chip! Requires further investigation beyond an Unboxing! Yes, We had issues with the WD Black SN850 on the Gigabyte X16 M.2 NVMe PCIe Quad card but did not have any of those issues on the ASUS nor ASRock! And We've used the Sabrents on all 3 of those as well as other M.2 NVMe PCIe cards such as the Glotrends Sky and Amfeltec Squid Carrier Board. The WD Black SN850 was a surprise in deed! Based on the Thunderbolt OEM Device ID, there's a Bridge Chip to connect the M.2 NVMe to the Thunderbolt even if it's just a pass through. Expect that would require a Microscope to View even if We did go looking based on the size of the Device. Looks like We're going to start using a Microscope! Appreciate Your Comments! 90 percent of poor write speeds I’ve encountered were due to power. Often a particular drive is is right on the limit of the slot so it dips at times. With that said my Samsung 990s don’t like having less than 4 lanes available. Run them by them selves to include JBOD and they seem to stay happy.

@@BuildOrBuy I was really interested in the power over usb-c rather than the DC input. I could travel with it with a regular charger, no?
The drives in disk management shows healthy buy they're not visible in windows explorer because they don't have any drive letter assigned to them, you could have just assigned a drive letter rather than delete the volume and recreate it. Just my opinion. Hope I'm not offending you.

Welcome! One of the many wonders of Windows! Usually more than one way to accomplish a Goal! So too are Sanitize commands but not necessary for most situations. We treat all Removeable Media the same. Especially working with many different Video Cameras. Always format Media in Device doing the Recording to restore File Structure integrity and prevent Data Corruption. Not as big a deal with NVMe as an SDXC card. We should have treated the M.2 NVMe PCIe Drives as new Drives from the Viewers perspective. However, We have lots of Videos on RAID and Quad cards. This was expedient. Appreciate Your Comments! You're absolutely correct about PATIENCE, so I watched thru the video and saw you were using WINDOWS. I had the exact purchase in mind yesterday, but hesitated because it also mentioned SOFTWARE RAID with Windows, and not MAC... which I wish to use with, as a work and scratch editing drive with the same SSDs you put in, so does it work the same way WITH A MAC? Success on Your RAID!
Why do you suggest to not use this as a "working drive"? Would you worry about heat? Reliability? Do you see software raid as not optimal? I've been using SATA ssd's with SoftRaid in a raid 4 config on my mac and it works fine, though it does seem like the lifetime of the SATA ssd's isn't as great as I'd expect.

Welcome! Great Question! A software RAID, especially external is fragile. If You've ever lost a Drive, multiply that frustration! Besides, anything in RAID should exist in 3 places. Yes, RAID is more stable than it use to be. Especially with SSDs or M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD Drives! However, not portable like a Hardware RAID. Just speaking from experience. Your Results may vary! Great Enclosure! Thanks for Sharing! As to the longevity of SSDs and M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD Drives, Backblaze has the best Stats. The technology is just too new to know yet about that inevitable possibility, not if but when!
For backup data for long term storage, can this possibly be used in windows storage spaces or is the 2 drive options better. I am not worried about speed, but the TBW and the backup/redundancy. If not, can you suggest another feasible solution. Is a synology NAS solution better? Again, I want to stay away from mechanical drives. That is why I am searching for a solution. Yes it can. However there are better Options available depending upon Your Budget. This is a Software RAID Solution. Any real external RAID Solution should be independent of the Host Computer. Thus an external Hardware RAID Solution. And preferably something Scalable such as iodyne.com or Blackmagic

Welcome! Excellent Question! Thunderbolt required vs Thunderbolt Compatible. This Device requires Thunderbolt. Which makes this an all or nothing Device. Every new Computer will have USB-C. And USB-C with an adapter can connect to USB 3. However, with Thunderbolt, it's strictly Thunderbolt which is a Bummer!
USB-C 10Gbps and USB-C 20Gbps 2x2 is easier to implement than Thunderbolt 40Gbps. Hope that helps!
On some motherboards you can have 4 NVMe slots some thru the CPU & some thru the chipset. In addition there are 6 or 4 sata available sometimes only 2 sata available as the NVMe’s tend to disable some sata drives when installed. My questions is can you create 2 RAIDs on one motherboard? Let’s say between 2 NVMe’s on the board itself & 2 sata drives especially RAID 0, hardware RAID No software involved.

Welcome! Great Question! Yes, as We reference the Gigabyte TRX40 Designare as having that capability of 4 M.2 NVMe PCIe Drives, on the Motherboard. 2 to CPU and 2 through Chipset. A HEDT Configuration of Dedicated PCIe Resources.
Your RAID Q: Can We have Multiple RAIDs on 1 Motherboard, Yes! A true Hardware RAID requires a Hardware PCIe card with something like a Broadcom MegaRAID. We have a Video on that Topic!
As a Hybrid Bios Bootable RAID.
1. M.2 NVMe
2. M.2 SSD
3. SATA3 HDD or SSD But not Combined. Disparate technologies. Each must be like kind.
Those 3 above can all coexist as separate RAIDs but cannot be combined. To reiterate Disparate technologies! On the AMD and Intel Motherboard RAIDs, the expectation is once RAID is turned On, Everything will be in RAID. And that's NOT required but that's the Default Driver install behavior. We have another Video on that for a non typical Hybrid Bios Bootable RAID whether used as Boot or not. Hope that clarification helps!

Since I needed and immediate solution to replace a 1To SSD used for Time Machine (Mac backup), I went with the Phixero 2-bay NVMe M.2 enclosure (no RAID). But I'm going to try this solution you recommended as soon as possible, thanks!!!

If you could do a follow up video and test the temperature of this unit under load, I think that would be illuminating. More respected manufacturers, example OWC, in fact everybody I know has a fan for cooling purposes . So how does this perform under load? Say transferring 2 or 3 TB of video files and doing a video export. Just my thoughts.

Welcome! Great idea for a future Video when We explore those types of Results. That aspect does absolutely generate heat. Burst mode of Specs can be very different than actual Throughput for a given file size over a given amount of time. We've had these Discussions before for the many aspects of NVMe. Or any Storage Media for that number. Always Test and Verify! For the most part, External RAID should be Hardware RAID so it's independent and portable. And from what We've experienced with M.2 NVMe PCIe Heatsink Testing, be prepared to blow all expectations out the Window! That experience alone has shown Passive Cooling to be more effective than Active Cooling just Testing to Verify as Described. What We know to be true, the faster We go repeatedly, the hotter We get. And that definitely affects Performance! Appreciate Your Comments!
@@BuildOrBuy great video, I agree though that real tests for these enclosures are large file transfers. Bust type tests are hugely misleading. I have to transfer 1-2 terabytes from nvme to nvme with hash checksums all day long with about an hour of idle time inbetween. sadly Nobody ever runs those sorts of test in reviews. Did you find out why the drop in speed? It may also have been nvme heat/speed throttling. The prev rockets (blue) i have do not have the throttle.

Please Define ?atermiter? X79 Chipset.... OK! Depending upon the Motherboard Chipset implementation, You may require a Bios Mod (Be careful doing that!) for the PCIe Resources required to be reallocated or Bifurcated which means to Split or Fork. As for this Thunderbolt Device, this requires Thunderbolt 3 which is PCIe 3.0 which provides 4 PCIe Lanes. Thunderbolt 3 requires Bios Support for Full Device Support by way of a Motherboard Thunderbolt 3 Header Cable. And those 4 PCIe Lanes exposed through Thunderbolt are mapped one to one based on the Bridge Chip Design which We do not know what Bridge Chip is being used in this Thunderbolt Device. I bought 4 nvme drives thinking I could use this to house them, but now it seems completely unavailable. Are there any alternatives that don't have a fan? I can't seem to find a single one. Passive cooling is very important for my usage of this thing. It seems insane no one else is making something like this

Welcome! Yes, since RAID 5 requires 3 or more Drives, We have that with 4 Drives using Windows Storage Spaces instead of Windows Disk Management from Control Panel. Welcome! Great Question! Your Results may vary. Always Test and Verify! Windows O/S Software based RAID and the Bridge Translation Chip in Device. Not a fan of External Software RAID. Risky Business! External RAID should only be a Hardware RAID. Fully portable. And sustainable! Hope that helps!

Welcome! Great Question! Like Bit Rot! Been hearing that for quite a while now. Remember when LG created the M-Disc Data Disc? Ever use one? Neither did We! We still have good usable Data on 5.25 inch Floppies. At least it was still usable 5 years ago. Some Stat Data, expensive Font files and File formats of Data We are currently not nor have used in over 20 years. So longevity is relevant. Remember the movie, Time Machine? The Original one? Those Rings with Voices of Data. Spin them and they speak. Now that's longevity! Back to Your Question, We don't know the next format after M.2 NVMe. We did not know about M.2 NVMe until it arrived! There will be another and another. Technology moves on. And We expect We'll still be able to use the Data IF We have a Device that can read it! That's going to be the issue. I went to a garage sale just recently and picked up some 128 MB and 256 MB flash drives. That's right MB, not GB. Old USB 2.0 drives for use in some of my older retro computers and they still had data on them with a creation date of in the mid 1990's when I connected them to a computer with the oldest being one drive with some mp3's from 1992 (Probably they came from napster!). That's 30 years of storage in NAND Flash and I tested and they still play in a music player today. M.2 drives are even newer and even better at data retention vs old flash drives so I would estimate data stored on them would last quite a long time. Probably longer than you or I will be alive.

On a side note, always check other Removable Media Devices for Bugs and Viruses! That's how Social Engineering gains a foot hold! But the Data is still intact! Yes! Agreed! Our Data will outlast Us!
I'm running it with a 2018 mac mini with 2 NVME drives installed.
- Initially, I was only able to achieve circa 600MB/s (10Gb/s) when testing using Black Magic Disk Speed Test and the 2 (max possible 4) disks in a JBOD.
- Using Disk Utility and configuring the 2 NVME drives I have installed as Software RAID 0 (Stripped) I'm able to achieve 1235 MB/s.
Obviously RAID comes with its pros and cons. I'm assuming the 40Gb/s of Thunderbolt is evenly divided across each NVME bay (10Gb/s x 4).

Due to how you wordered the description of the device in the first few minutes of the video I was under the impression that the Jeyi device it's self supports it's own RAID-0 mode some how? But you didn't test that? Only windows software RAID? I thought the device could combine the drives to one single 8TB device that's exported to the system some how? I'm confused.

Great Question! To reiterate, this Thunderbolt Device only supports Software RAID which is a function of the O/S. In this case, Windows. For a Device to support it's own Configuration would require a SoC or System on Chip Design which would do more (internal O/S) and be more expensive as was mentioned with the iodyne Pro Data and Blackmagic Cloud Store in comparison! First the Hardware - This Thunderbolt Device. Second, which would be Configuration, is all done through the O/S. Hence the Question about moving a RAID Device based on Questions. Risky! The thermal pads aren't pointless. On the otherside of the PCB, where the drives mount, I guarantee that is where the chipset lives.
That would seem to be a very silly and dumb idea...but not really. Let's consider this:
Is the chipset going to get hot itself through operation? Probably not, only indirectly from the heat of the drives. So...in a way, you can use the actual chipset to dissipate heat off the drives. That's not probably a very comfortable bit of knowledge to have, but it's a clever idea, and if the chipset can handle the thermals and do double duty as a heatsink...
There also appears to be more room than necessary on the top side of the card, where you can't look. I suspect the chipset is attached to the case, with another thermal pad, and the case is also a heatsink, and that little gap and the different cutouts on either end are just designed to theoretically create pressure differential when there is heat, and cause a slight exhaust effect.
It makes sense, that in a passively cooled case, 'small' case, you would put the hottest components at the bottom, and allow everything else to absorb and dissipate heat.
So the case is the heatsink, and it's probably connected directly to the PCB components on the reverse side with thermal padding. That's why they want tight contact to the case on the heatsinks at the bottom as well, because the case can absorb that as well.
You said the top felt hotter than the bottom, where the heat is actually coming from. So those thermal pads ARE making contact with the case, and the case IS a heatsink. That's why the case needs to have those ridges tightly machined as well, as the entire thing has to fit together in such a way that it acts as a block.
