RIP Gordon Lightfoot one of the greatest songwriters ever! Thank you for the 6 plus decades of great songs, feelings, and memories. See you on the Carefree Highway ❤
he's never stopped touring except for 2003/2004 after he fell ill in sept.2002 in his hometown of orillia just before a concert.. TOURS: lightfoot.ca/tourschd.htm
This is THE version... Voice and arrangements at its best. Thank you. My 33 rpm record is scratched. We didn't know the value of these records at that time...
This song was actually written for a movie initially by the same name but changed to "Hail, Hero!" (another tune co-written by Lightfoot), Michael Douglas' first film about a guy about to go into the Army (terrible film) I always thought the lyrics were all over the place, fitting in with the film
What do you people think of the line "the rain can touch me, but can i touch the rain?" Do you think he means this literally or is rain meant to mean something else? I think about it every time i hear this song???
Archimedes said, if I had a platform I could move the world. Unfortunately, there is no such a platform. We cannot separate ourselves from the world. We are part of it. We observe it and yet we can never really be part of it. It's like the eye trying to see itself. We are always an observer and this is greatest tragedy. We are part of the One, and yet when can we truly experience, it? I guess we just have to keep searching for the wherefore and the why.
RIP Gordon! Now you know the "why!" Thank you for the music.

"It's in the Sun above, it's in the One you Love". I LOVE this song !
brings a tear to my eye (memories)
No one like Gordon Lightfoot. A star for all ages.
Wherefore And Why
Gordon Lightfoot
When I woke this mornin',
Something inside of me told me
This would be my day
I heard the morning train,
I felt the wind change,
Too many times I'm on my way
Come on sunshine, what can you show me
Where can you take me to make me understand
The wind can shake me, brothers forsake me
The rain can touch me, but can I touch the rain
And then I saw the sunrise above the cotton sky like a candycane delight
I saw the milkman, I saw the business man, I saw the only road in sight
Then I got to thinkin' what makes you want to go, to know the wherefore
and the why
So many times now, oh Lord I can't remember if it's September or July
Come on sunshine, what can you show me
Where can you take me to make me understand
The wind can shake me, brothers forsake me
The rain can touch me, but can I touch the rain
Then all at once it came to me, I saw the wherefore, and you can see it if you try
It's in the sun above, it's in the one you love, you'll never know the reason why
Come on sunshine, what can you show me
Where can you take me to make me understand
The wind can shake me, brothers forsake me
The rain can touch me, but can I touch the rain
So much to lose, so much to gain

Gordon Lightfoot's been touring lately..
Here's one of his tunes from a few+ years back
He is touring all the time now :) ! April 16, 2018.

@@lightfootfan He fell ill at a concert in Hamilton and spent a couple months at McMaster University Medical Centre
sorry, fell ill in Orillia and was airlifted to Mac in Hamilton :-)
I can't imagine, he didn't, apparently like this version, and recorded another version later. But I like this, and didn't like the other version.
I think I like this version better too. More folky, more authentic, less lush/country than the one on Gord's Gold.
The energy is all wrong on the later version. For me nothing on Gord’s Gold works like the originals.
I agree . I like the tone in his voice better on this one and the energy of the song itself. The other version is laid back more .
i have loved this song since i was 15. only like this original version.
+Gwen Lee, agreed.. this a great version

It's always too short. To short for me.
You’ll never know the reason why.

It really is a great line. Think he means accept things as they are and keep an open mind because there's "so much to lose.. so much too gain"
The rain falls when it wants and there is nothing you can do.
