very interesting I have used Windsor and newton acrylic paint one that has a mortar colour unsold the same method as the dry wall filler and had good success. Brian from the UK

A method for brickwork that I have use is spray the wall with a rattle can of off white / cement color, then using a makeup foam wedge, dab on the brick red color. It gives a weathered variation in the brick color

As you say, it's always tricker the more raised detail there is in the brickwork. One advantage of the filler method is that once it's completely, large lumps (as in the "crenelations") can be picked out with a dental pick. Personally, my preferred method is the very thin white/dirty grey wash (and I've even used dirtied white India ink successfully) - if you get it thin enough and can overcome surface tension, you can dab it on and let it fill the mortar lines by capillary action.
(I seem to remember saying that very recently to someone, or writing it somewhere else: did you cover it on your US channel too, or maybe it was another channel, or on Facebook or something.)
