Dude, that was a trackless trolley. Muni's trolley busses have batteries and don't have to run on wires all of the time. This is pretty standard for modern trolley busses. In fact, as Muni is getting more of these battery-assisted trolleys they're creating some new lines that weren't possible with the old battery-less vehicles they used to run.

I know it is physically a trackless trolley but I’m sure you’d agree that a trackless trolley is much more fun with cables up than without. I was just disappointed that it wasn’t on the wire because that’s more unique.

@@msptransit I guess... But I grew up with the electric trolleys so they're 100% normal and boring to me. It's the fact that they can now auto-magically run without wires that's the surprising/amazing part, and borderline "creepy dream territory"! That's not something that you used to see in service at all. It was impossible.
I mean, a Muni trolley that's not connected to the overhead wires = "dead thing that can't move, find another one to get you where you need to go". The fact that the new ones just nonchalantly disconnect from the wires and continue on their merry way is the surprising part if you're used to trolley busses.
