Choosing The Right Mic For Your Vocal - Recording Techniques
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 29 июл 2015
- Head of Audio Jason de Wilde talks us through choosing the right microphone for vocals in the studio at the Australian Institute of Music.
Choosing the best microphone for a vocalist is not just a case of grabbing the most expensive mic in your cabinet. Each microphone has certain aspects that either enhance or cancel out the unique characteristic sound of the vocalist you are recording. In this video, Jason de Wilde , the Head of Audio at the Australian Institute of Music does a “microphone shootout” using a large variety of microphones. There are 10 microphones in the selection, ranging in price from around $100 up to thousands of dollars. The results will surprise you. The vocalist in this video is AIM student Sammi O’Rourke from the band Levingstone.
Which mic did you like best? Leave us a comment!

Daniel Huynh 😂😂😂
I was so confused, but thanks to you, it's all been cleared up. lol.
Daniel Huynh 😂😂😂
Thank You Soo much. This makes so much more sense.
Died laughing. My soul is posting this comment from hell ... all the best musos are down here, with me ... it's hella cool ... well, hella hot, but yeah ... ...
The video’s purpose is to inform people on how different mic brands sound, and then here comes people criticizing the lyrics, the singer, the song etc?
People are so weird 🙃🙃🙃
That’s because she made them all sound bad!
RUclips do your thang and recommend hundreds of videos like this
Interesting experiment. I appreciate the fact that someone took the time to upload this.
( I also had the Rode K2 in my top 2 favourites :) )
Great video! Very honest and quick. Thanks for the upload
I like the first one, it is even louder too and has more dynamics to it, but they can all sound the same too.
Thanks, I think I know how to pick a mic for my workstation now.
I hope you can do more videos like this one.
M-Audio Solaris is my favorite.
Beautiful vocals! Thanks for the mics demo.
I think the words were something like
"Use breathing as currency, traded your words for. Four times of pleasure for you, splitting it to begin."
Gorgeous voice and great track in my opinion.
shure and Rode k2 is my favourite
Geesh I'm a bit of a noob, they all sounded the same to me, more or less. Eek!
I have always been in love AT mics for vocals.
+Ariel Shiffer Cheers for that!
Great video and fair blind testing. Thanks for sharing!
IMHO she sounds good on the SHURE/ and rode.. behringer shocked me.. and the seinheisser is the DARK HORSE... HER VOICE.. sounds better in the warmer side.. and adding shimmer SLIGHTLY how you see fit.....
Excellent video guys. Thanks.
yous breathing in currency, traded your words infor, far times a pleasure for you, splitting it to begin???
hahahahahahahahah
wow you are the smartest man on earth alive and you solved this big mystery
you got some talent lolz jk
R.I.P Noteworthy lyrics.
On a serious note, I think they had a goal in mind in testing the mics and not winning the grammy awards.
haha
ugh
Great vocalist and nice seeing all the different mic's/models/sounds, thanks from the USA!
+Kenny Cheers and greetings from Sydney!
For those who can not hear a difference, it is your sound equipment or computer speakers. There is a very audible difference, each mic has its own sound signature.
I personally liked the U87 the most. In this music, the character is needed. If it was a pop instrumentation, I'd probably chose the AT 5040 bc it has the most neutral sound of all.
My pick was the Aussie Rode K2 before the big reveal. Just an amazing mic for the price and locally designed and made. See we did invent more than just utes and clothes lines.
And lawnmowers.
@@officialWWM This is true. And isn't the neighbours or the councils lawn mower fun when your in a recording session?
@@walterwilliams1323 lol, yes, they are so inconsiderate!
Big respect to Rode mics overall, NT1 was my first professional studio mic, it was clear from the first moment it's different league❤
@@mojekh my first pro mic was the NT1-A and it made its investment back many times over in VO scripts for all media.
Super helpful! Thank you 👏🏾
And this episode and probably the college was sponsored and endorsed by.....RODE
Side Note... If you are doing a Mic Shoot Out, it is advised to put the mics in the same position each time...as Mic 1 was near to sound absorption curtain...and as she went to each mic, was headed toward reflective surfaces...Hence a good reason why mics 4 to 7 sounded more "alive"....Just a thought.
College should also look at hiring someone to teach proper pronunciation... :-)
Hey AimTVSydney, Thanks for your best review.
the Rode K2 is brighter and fits nicely in the mix! The U87 has more character... The Behringer is thin and flat sounding... Ill go with the K2
That moment when you realise working with music is what you want to do with your life.
+J A Y Y A M S P Very cool. Good luck! :-). Jase
Sounded great Kylie!!!
What a wonderful voice!
AT 4080's sound is amazing!
I was right on the money!!! lol the k2 and the u87 where my favorites.
Listening on Focal twin's through apogee symphony I/O. With her voice, Audio Technica AT5040 would come in 1st for me. The high end isn't piercing, very warm sounding. Her voice is thin so a warm sounding mic would fit best. If any high end would need to be added, you could add that in during mixing if any. The 5040 shined through and was in a league of its own. Great sound..
I also did like the 4th mic, I think it captured the perfect sound.
Listening to on Sennheiser HD598's.
C414 > U87 > Solaris > MD421 > B-2 > SM58 > AT4080
wow, she is amazing singer. i like her. you are great singer Samee.
Really liked the B-2. But I agree the K-2 has nice warmness for her vocals also gets ride of the 1.1kh resonant frequency which all other mics seems to have. The U87 has been giving so much trouble for female vocals are vocals that are high in general.
It's Great ... thank you
She is from the flintstones! Love the voice!
I distinguished the differences, using different speakers, thanks! Loved the -vocals & face-whatever U sang! Where can we find Sammy's music?
Sennheiser md421 I the most unflattering microphone for her voice but the AKG 414 Sounds the best to my ears
Rhode K2 sounded so different, I love it!
AKG c414 Is the winner by far !!
I hate condensed mics they always pick too much high freqs and sibilance. SHURE SM58 sounded the best here, nice low end without all the fizzy noise around.
condensed mics have a crisp that I like so maybe its preference. dynamic is the right word for the mic though, dynami exaclty in Greek means power and that is why you don't need phantom power
Hi Mr. Jason. Thank you for sharing this. Which microphone (and model) do you suggest is best for an alto voice please. Truly appreciate your reply thank you.
I have no idea what the singer is on about but I absolutely love it
Thank you :)
I like the Rode k2 the most!
The Rode is the best choice in the studio of the Australian Institute of Music, I wonder what gets picked in the studios of the German Institute of Music :D Btw, I am from Romania, and I also picked a Dacia Duster several times over BMW X5... yeah, sure :)) Don't get me wrong, Rode's are great cheap mics just as Dacia's are nice cars in their price range, but I'm in doubt we have an unbiased opinion right here :) Most mics worked quite well, including the K2 which I own also and it's great for the price, and the SM58 proving as always that you can do decent stuff with really cheap microphones - in my experience the SM57 works even better for studio vocals (it's the same mic without the grill and that makes it more open).
I actually liked her the best through the 414 and the Shure
I did like the Rode K2 the best. Also Audio tech A74080 & AKG C414.
RODE K2
Agreed.
Yeah dude, honestly it was between them 58 and the K2
Salvador Peláez agreed
hmm....I got the K2 and was looking at getting the SM58 too lol
Way too treble heavy. Almost digitally sounding. Tinny.
In mixing, I'd pick the U87 than the rode. I have a rode Nt1 and love it but also have a Neumann TLM 103 and use that mic more for vocals now. I did find one thing rather interesting here in that there was no pop filter used on any of them. Unheard of in the industry that I'm used to.
Wouldn't that depend what you were mixing it into ... and assuming the backing is the rest of the mix in full ...
You can always use subtractive EQ on a nice, full signal like the one from the K2, to fit it into the mix ... the U87 was not as full across the spectrum that best suited her voice, to my ears ...
Xquisitaz pop filters are unnecessary with specific voices and people particularly well trained. Also a trained engineer can target the specific frequency that the majority of the 's' and other sounds dwell in and turn them down, which is better than using a pop filter since they don't discriminate between problem frequencies and innocent bystander frequencies. This way you can get a fuller more natural sound basically, even if it is just a little bump in quality :)
Shure 58 and AKG sound the best in her voice, theres no doubt
I'm usually not a huge fan of the U87 but I believe it was the best in this scenario.
I own a Rode K2 and the AT5040. She was singing above the sweet spot on the capsule of the At5040 which really was a shame as the beautiful detail this mic has to offer was not as apparent as it should have been. :)
The Rode and the two Audio Tech's were my favorite! I was surprised at the Neumann not sounding as good (to me at least) as the Rode!
I liked the Audio Technica AT5040.
To my ear it was a tie between the AT5040 and the RODE 2K, then the Neumann U87 very close behind.
I liked best the K2 and U87. The MD421 was interesting if a particular sound was searched and I also found two AT too rich in the low end
Rode was good, probably my second fav. 4080 was best imho. Seemed to control her dynamic voice.
I believe just as important, is the type of music (Jandra) when selecting a microphone. I am a firm believer in finding the right mic for the right singer. However, the style of music contributes to my choices. I tend to favor the RODE NT 1000 for vocals but that often changes depending on the singer, style of music.
I chose the same!
Can hear the Nai Palm influence... Thanks for sharing!
Rode K2 was my fav on her voice
Thank you for doing this video. It helps a lot! And thanks Sammie, you did a wonderful job by being consistent with your performance so we could better compare the mics. IT'S NOT EASY! Anyone who has been in the studio knows what I'm talking about. It take years of practice with good ears and professionalism. GOOD JOB! And I love your voice and music as well. Please ignore the idiots that don't know what this video is for.
I too like the Rode K2 as I feel it gives more ambience and warmth.
Using sub-par headphones but I liked the K2 then the AT5040
All very subjective or course!
I'd rather know your vocal effects chain and settings...very nice sound.
The sennheiser md421 sounded the best and really captured the singer's voice beautifully. Overall though, there is a very slight different from mic to mic. Well at least what I heard from having a headset on, so my opinion might be a little biased.
I found the Neumann u87 and the BehringerB2 actually sounded surprisingly the same!
Hi Jim. I was really pleasantly surprised at how good that B2 sounded as well. Thanks for the comment.
Yes the Behringer did sound great... almost as good as the Nooiiiiimann... :)
What are you listening to this on? No offense but they are very different sounding - the Neumann really is very mid forward, and so detailed it brought out her breath, which only the K2 did a bit which makes it sound like the singer is singing right in front of you. But in a dense mix it doesn't have a lot of the top end that would help it cut through - especially these days when the main vocal is mixed further back than in the mid century.
The Behringer was 'nice' but bland sounding by comparison, although it did have a little more in the presence area (2k to 4k ish) so would cut through a dense mix decently but not a lot of definition. I found it slightly better than the SM58, but no useful low end on either of those mics (and a couple of the others)
I'd agree with them that the K2 was probably best for that mix and is a really nice sounding mic - but as other's have pointed out, it also depends on what the artist and producer want for a finished sound. Different singer/song/arrangement could change the best choices. I would also have placed the Neumann ahead of the AT 4080. But that's preference.
HardwireSpeers, Sennheisser 280 pro
Ha - me too :D
the b2 and the rode k2
I picked the Rode K2 while she was singing.
I liked the Rode k2
Woah the sennheiser MD421 has a real big shift in tone to the others, is there a reason for that? It's clear that the audio technica and behringer shine through as the best ones.
Weird how you really can’t make out the words. Having said that she’s makes a great harmonic sound. Lovely voice and great track. The Rode is definitely a good match for her voice, the U87 sounded strangely muffled in the mids. The M Audio Solaris was very nice also.
U87 AI is the winner. It's sounds are warmer than any other.
That Rode K2 though!
-I picked that one before I saw the end pick.
U87-not much to be said there, all time classic!
I never saw that M-audio they had before, I forgot they made mics, but it fit her voice well.
Didnt like either of the Audio-Technicas, their cheaper one (2020,2035) sound better than the one used here
For beginners, That Behringer B2 could be decent on a budget with some dynamics tweaking, I believe that mic is like $100
i thought it would sound like absolute crap, was wrong about that
She's got a unique voice as in she really doesn't have that much in the way of highs so mics that have a good high boost benefit her. The AT5040 which is really clear and accurate gave me a good idea of what her tone is, which on that mic it didn't suit her at all and in fact almost made her sound like she was singing with a clogged nose but again, I suspect that's closer to her natural singing tone.
I actually thought the AT4080 sounded the best so I was happy that it ended up in the top 3 choices. But yeah, I assume mics that have more hyped highs or more air would benefit her best. Another good choice might be the Sennheiser 441 with the bright switch on. Also maybe a Blue Kiwi or a Tele Ar-51. Both of those mics tend to have pretty boosted highs. Although the Blue and Tele always sound a bit bass shy to me so those two might also neuter some of that nice body she has to her voice.
She was pretty consistent though. Nice test - thanks for demonstrating. In the end though she is a good vocalist and it shows that each mic actually would be usable because the source is good. But of course choosing the mic that flatters her most cuts out extra work at mix time.
I liked the Rode K2
wow.. rode k2 !!
whats the best type of mics for vocalz
b2 the best price-quality mic. but the best sound was k2 soo friking far, just for begining its fine the b2? or wich i have to buy?
WOW, SO NIGHT AND DAY!! . .

Not sure if it was the mics, but I couldn't understand a word she sang. For this test you need to find a vocalist who has some vocal power and better articulation.
+donepearce i know man
@@dorianlawson6799 its all subjective mate, at least she is unique, but not a good voice to give us any clear picture of the mics. My voice would probably also not work for Mic Demos either to be fair.
I really loved the Audio Technica AT504~ of course its the one that costs 3K~ :) Oh well the Rode K2 was also nice...
Thank you so much for this experiment. This is so helpful to me. The Rode is my favourite. As this video has helped me, I would like to give some free vocal knowledge. Beautiful voice Sammy. As a vocalist remember the words are of the upmost importance and we need to understand them. I can understand the words when you are speaking so just focus a little more on pronouncing the words the exact same way as when you speak. Don't change the way you pronounce the words when you sing. Otherwise it sounds the way Daniel below has written. Sing the exact same way as you speak. Pronounce the exact same way as you speak. You'll find more voice will become available to you. Your speaking voice is beautiful. Well done, great work. Looking forward to hearing more.
SIR
I want to do voice over. I want to record my poetry professionally. In which I get high quality. But in my poetry some lines will go in high tone and some lines will go in emotional low tone. And my room is not sound proof. Suggest me a good mic, headphone and audio interface.
Initially I thought she was stuck like old broken tape record but then realized different mics were being tested which all sounded the same to me.
whats the best mic for weekend type vocals and soprano?
I wonder ..does this woman feel annoyed. .cause she kept singing the same verse over and over again😂
Thats how you practice vocals. I guarantee you this isnt her first time singing the same phrase over and over
Its a sacrifice in the name of sound
the Neumann U 87 was clear and lv the whole time but that was her push not the mic and for 3 grand it should, i can't believe some of these are in the test, like the shure sm58, thing is more of a dynamic stage mic then a recording vocals mic even tho it is "Cardioid" the behringer and some of the others shoulda been replaced with AT2020, AT4040, sE4400a, KSM4 and AKG C2000 B
DLSherwoodMinistries True
well said
I'd rather the dynamic mics over the cheap harsh condensers. U87 was the best akg c414 maybe with pop screen or the at off axes
I like the "shure sm 58"
Why is this video making me laugh so much, I dunno if it was because of the comment section or what. But I'm howling. No further insight into buying a mic but thanks for the laughs..
What was the end conclusion all about? Why the scarf, the jacket. This guy had enough and wanted to leave.
Anyone else thought they were going to do a like run down in order?
hahahah gosh!
What Preamp did you use ? that is IMPORTANT :D
I am a belting singer I sing a lot of Musical Theatre Pieces that go into my G-Bb range and I need a mic that won't peak when I'm singing in that range what song should I get?
Sennheiser had the most interesting sound, mainly just because it was really thin. Gave her a Beth gibbons quality. Worth using as an effect for one song on an album or part of a song. Otherwise I thought the at4080 was the nicest.
ShureSM58 is my top pick
Rode,senneiser and behringer for me
Wow beautiful voice
The shure sm-58 still sounds the clearest to me , yet it lacks in the low end which most of these mics where better at.
And man am i tripping or did that sennheiser sound like it was in a paper cone??
Of course the "rode k2" is the best mic i have ever heard the man is correct, it has the fully balanced tonal range, head-room, and clarity that every audio engineer wants.
They all sound a bit muffled to me.
