Its so simple: Rog ally and lenovo have better performance than the steam deck ONLY if you play at +15tdp, like 20tdp or higher, wich means 1h of battery life, because at lower TDP the deck outperforms both of them by a mile.
So, why do the bast mayority of handheld community prefer the deck over the more powerful ones? Because that extra power comes with a big downside wich is the battery life, so most of us prefer to get 10fps less than the others but 4h of battery life.
The other point is the user experience, because the steam os is basically a console-like interface that inatalls everything you need by itself, with a plug &play system, while with the others , you have an standard Windows interface with all the useless procesnon.the background, and you have to install drivers, bios etc manyally and you have to install and configre a bunch of scene programs to achive an intreface like the Steam deck, and even then , its not the same at any means.
So, in summary, if you want raw power and you fon't care about user experience or battery life, you could choose a rog or lenovo and you are going to be happy, but if you want a console like experience, and much more battery life with best efficiency, the you have to get a Steam deck.

*The* *One* *To* *Rule* *Them* *All*
If you’re a gamer or a cell phone enthusiast, I don’t believe that’s ever existed. You may get one that makes you content or fulfills your needs *most* of the time. But hobby enthusiasts can be greedy. They want it all. They’re not always content with a one and only device for the next 2 to 5 years. They will get bored and look somewhere else.
I’ve actually never been a diehard loyal fanboy for one company whether it was with consoles or cell phones. I enjoy trying out different brands. Including handhelds, I’ve owned 22 gaming devices. That’s with 6 brands (Nintendo, Sega, Atari, Sony, Microsoft, Valve). With phones since Christmas 1999, I’ve owned over 50 phones from 20 different brands. I’ve used OSes like Symbian, BlackBerry OS, webOS, iOS, Android, and Windows Phone.
Perhaps the only time I was dedicated to one console was with the PS1 from 1996-2001 but this was mostly because I wasn’t working enough to afford to buy the other consoles. I was 15 going to turn 16 when I got a PS1. I did work by 18 in 1999 but it was only briefly. The Saturn was dead to Americans by 1998. And N64 games didn’t interest me much when I borrowed one from a friend for a month.
The PS2 is the best-selling console of all-time selling over 150M compared to the 20M-25M that the GameCube and Xbox sold and even PS2 didn’t exactly feel like The One To Rule Them All because the hardware was inferior to the other two, and in the early years, had inferior ports compared to the Dreamcast. PS2 was in the market for 13 years (2000-2013).
I don’t feel Sony got it right with hardware until PlayStation 4. Ken Kutaragi developed the Emotion Engine, a CPU that overpromised but underdelivered. We were promised real-time graphics that would compare to Toy Story or Final Fantasy: Spirits Witnin (2001). We never got that until the 8th generation as the FF7 Remakes look better than the CGI in Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children and FMV cutscenes from FF games prior to PS3.
PS4 might be the most underrated PlayStation home console ever. It didn’t have the greatest library as it did have many ports from the PS3 era. But in terms of hardware, it was one of the best. Sony went to AMD in 2009 after Kutaragi left them in 2007. Ken was technically demoted. PS3 was difficult to develop for similar to the PS2, and Sony was losing $200 per unit. PS4 was similar to PS1, easier to develop for.
I know the Sixth Gen is beloved thanks to PS2, GameCube, Dreamcast, and Xbox. This was before Internet subscriptions, the endless FPS games, and micro-transactions. But looking back, their 3D graphics looks very much dated. Many PS2 classics should be remade with modern graphics using Unreal Engine 4 or 5. They did for Shadow of Colossus and the first Yakuza. I would love Shenmue II to be graphically remade using UE4 like Shenmue III and FF7R did.
The PS4 was so good, the PS5 only feels like a PS4 Pro 2. Faster write speeds and that’s it. It seems graphics have plateaued or at least for most games that isn’t VR. And the Steam Deck falls between the power of an Xbox One and base PS4. Probably closer to Xbone as a base PS4 still plays games in higher frames for higher resolution and bigger displays. And Valve and Microsoft have similar libraries.
Steam Deck is the PS Vita 2 / PSP 3 I always wanted but we never got from Sony since they quit on the Vita quickly by 2013 once PS4 was released. Steam Deck is the Microsoft handheld that we don’t need to wait on for a couple of years and happens to be on Linux. Does it have its limitations? Sure, it does. It’s kinda like PS2. A jack of all trades, master of none. It’s good for MOST people like me.
I would watch videos from Tech Odyssey and Adam recently praised his Legion Go. I have no interest for another PC handheld because I know for a fact I wouldn’t have time to play with both of them. The other would collect dust. I find that overkill. But if I had to choose one for Windows, it would be Legion Go over the ROG Ally. I’ve only had bad experiences with Asus.
It’s not like that the Steam Deck is weak. It’s only noticeable compared to a Legion Go and ROG Ally with the Z1 Extreme if compared side by side. If it’s on par to a base PS4, AAA graphics from 2015-2020 still looks quite nice in 2024. Considering I skipped most of the Seventh Gen, even Switch graphics still impresses me being done on a smaller handheld like that. Some of the most popular indies can be done using the power of a Sega Saturn.
    *My* *Sony* *Fandom*
Now if Sony releases the PlayStation 6 as a hybrid similar to a Switch or PC handheld, I may retire the Steam Deck for good. That could be the one to rule them all for me. I know a lot of people mock Sony and call their fans Ponys. But from my experience, Sony has given me some of the greatest stuff over the years.

    Men In Black
    James Bond (Daniel Craig ones)
The Karate Kid / Cobra Kai
    Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
    Zombieland
Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood
I used to collect Jackie Chan movies on VHS back in 1999. By the 2000s, Sony would remaster some older movies like Drunken Master, leave it uncut and subbed, and put it on DVD. They saved a lot of great 70s Jackie Chan classics.
My two favorite games of all-time are the original Final Fantasy VII and Shenmue II. The E3 from 2015 made my dreams come true with the announcement of FF7 Remake and Shenmue III. Now the latter was mostly a disappointment but I still applaud Sony for resurrecting Shenmue for us. The Kickstarter only raised $6M but Sony paid the bills for the other $14M.
To me, Sony is the best company in gaming or for multimedia entertainment. I’m aware their movie studios are regarded one of the worst, not comparable to say Warner Bros., but I’m fine with their content. They’re not perfect, I get that. Nobody is. Everyone makes mistakes, But I would rather support Sony over Nintendo if I had to pick between them. Nintendo will keep hardware improvement stagnant by releasing underpowered consoles/handhelds.
My PS Vita slim is 7-years-old and I bought it used. I was a second owner for that. Battery hasn’t degraded at all. Sony can make products that truly lasts. Give me a Sony handheld on par to a base PS5 by 2026 and I will gladly retire the Steam Deck for it. No more waiting 2-4 years to play FF7 Rebirth, God of War: Ragnarok, and Ghost of Tsushima on a Steam Deck.
    PlayStation 5
    Switch OLED
    Steam Deck OLED
^ Covers most things in gaming.
I personally use Vita slim, Switch Lite, LCDeck, and my Z Flip 3 to cover most of my gaming needs. The smaller and lighter, the better. A Switch Lite still amazes me with it’s size and weight while still being more powerful than an 11-pound PS3. I’m aware it’s using a dated 2015 SoC, but to have PS3/Xbox 360/Wii U graphics on the go still amazes me in 2024. Steam Deck could probably still amaze me by 2031.
The Steam Deck is the Vita 2, Switch Pro, and Xbox handheld we always wanted but we never got from Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft. It’s the greatest handheld until a Sony handheld or the successor to the Steam Deck surpasses it.

The Legion Go with BazziteOS Deck Edition is extremely similar to the SteamOS + Steam Deck experience, including suspend-resume, etc. If anybody wants a more powerful (but lower battery life) option vs the Deck, the LGO is a solid option.
Edit: To clarify, note that I also don't think this recommendation is for everyone. Even with Linux on the LGO, it is both more expensive and has lower battery life than a Deck. But for people that like the SteamOS experience, and don't mind trading off battery life for a higher performance ceiling, it's a solid alternative option imo.

I think I can sum up this 24+ minute video by saying this. What works for me may not work for you. My preferences are my own and therefore you need to figure out what would be yours. I have a Steam deck and I love it. All these three machines haves good things and bad things however they all essentially do the same thing. The biggest drawback the Steam deck has is that if you like playing Madden, Fifa, Call of Duty you wont be able to do so because the anti cheat software is not supported in Linux. Other than that, we can split hairs about performance this and that but at the end, the device needs to work for whatever use you are intending. I chose the steam deck because it did all I wanted and then some. It works well for me and I do not regret buying it, even if I cannot play call of duty on it.

I have a 7 years old laptop that can outperform the Ally and Go. I've been gaming in bed on laptops long before there were any PC handhelds including docking them to my TV using a wireless controller, keyboard and mouse. MS needs to add a handheld front end alongside the main one just like steam OS where windows bloat/busywork/UI just shuts the heck up and reroute those limited and precious resources to that mode, the concept of "windows" just does not work in a handheld.
LGO & Ally are amazing pieces of hardware but their one and only downside is "windows" aspect.
This coming from driving windows and even dos before it for the past 30+ years.

thing is that's not SteamOS it's Bazzite. Bazzite is based on an entirely different Linux distro. SteamOS is arch based. While Bazzite is based on Fedora.
SteamOS is intended to be non user alterable apart from apps via flatpak. Bazzite offers much more power OS features like a normal Linux distro you can run enterprise Linux tooling on it and change/add a lot more linux packages. Want virtualisation and containerisation of other Linux OS features, have at it. Bazzite is potentially much much more complicated than SteamOS.

no it's a fact. The Allys laptop APU can't offer the same power efficiency as the Deck at 15W or less. There is no such thing as a free lunch. 8 cores and 12CUs overwhem the Allys power efficiency sub 15W. The decks 4 core 8 CU APU was custom designed for low wattage scenarios. This has been proven the OG deck can give you around 6 hours on StarView Valley..the Ally gets 3 hours😂😂😂😂, it just get worse for the Ally when the OLED deck comes into play.
I own both an Ally and Deck. The Allys battery life is rubbish in comparison. Running Rogue Trader with the same settings on both at 12W I get 3 to 3.25ish hours at 45fps on the Deck. The Ally 2.25hrs at 30fps🤦

The Decks APU is most power efficient at 12W. You can not cheat physics. To get more battery out of the Ally you have to take it out of it's 'happy' place and then it's perf goes in the bin. The Ally fundamentally has the incorrect size battery for it's APU it needed a 55W battery at least, a 65W would have been better.
