Great review John. It's also worth listening to Parachute's vinyl release of the Straights live set in Cologne in 1979. Soundboard quality and great value for money.
I got the CD set in early November and then the vinyl a month later. Great set but I already have Alchemy and On The Night on vinyl already. The extra tracks are great from the OES tour. The Rainbow 79 show is excellent and will probably surface on RSD someday for people not into shelling out for the full schtick! BBC was issued on vinyl back in 1995 but is expensive.
I wasn't aware of this release either, but I plan on listening to it later today. Thanks for the overview of what's included, just like you, I have purchased enough Dire Straits over the years, and I will listen to this one on Apple Music. Thanks for sharing.
Hi there, John. Great video. But I think you should give On Every Street a chance. I know you're not that fond of Brothers in Arms, and it's good, because On Every Street doesn't sound like this album at all. It also has some wonderful songs such as the title track, Fade To Black( glorious blues track that one), You And Your Friend( more fantastic blues with a guitar to die for, as is always the case with Mark Knopfler anyway), How Long, Iron Hand, The Bug...Even tracks like Planet Of New Orleans or At My Parties, which may outstay their welcome a bit, are really good in my opinion. Anyway, take care and see you soon with another interesting video.
Thank you for the excellent overview . I'm with you , the Rainbow Concert sounds like the one to have . I have an old dvd of them playing live in Germany in 1979 , and they play with real fire . Alchemy is good , but I've found it to be lacking the fire of their concert in Germany . Also , I think that they lost a lot of their edge when their drummer Pick Withers left . If you haven't heard Fade to Black , you should listen to it , as I think it's a great song . Cheers !!
Ohhhhh but you're not a music lover if you don't pay for music you already own. Oooooh too cheap or too poor to buy a shiny plastic wrapped piece of plastic eh? I bet you're an immigrant, and an illegal one at that!
I love the new DS live boxset, especially the previously unreleased live set from 1979. I bought it for £50 at an online store here in Denmark, which I don't find expensive for an 8 CD box set.
I Think I Love You Too Much was given to Jeff Healey, and with Knopler guesting on that song on the album Hell To Pay. (Also feat. While My Guitar.. with Harrison and Jeff Lynne.)
Couldn’t agree with you more, John. Dire Straits are all about the first two albums and that era. Yes one or two great songs after that (eg Telegraph road, Tunnel of love, brothers in arms), but those first two albums are IMO far superior to everything they did thereafter. They were better live in that period too (based on the live releases), so the ‘79 Rainbow gig is the go to concert in this set. Great video.
@@jeffkaufman9875I love the first two tracks on that album, but personally find it falls flat after that on the whole. The production got a bit glossy for me then as well. All subjective of course!

John, I think I love you too much wasn't recorded in the studio, but can be seen on RUclips. Eric Clapton played on the song with Dire Straits at Knebworth 1990.
@@ColtraneTaylor oops sorry. It was meant to be a comment responding to John Heaton saying (I think) that he hadn't heard "I think I love you too much" before. Sorry about that.

Alchemy is one of the greatest live double albums of all time!

Ok will do Bob!
It’s a tremendous box set but pricey Thankyou for the video .
Thanks for the review John. Don't forget Focus Live At The Rainbow from 1973. Cheers
Your reviews are in a league of their own John!

Yes I’ve now given On Every Street a proper listen…not bad at all…I like that track and quite a few others…cheers
@@johnheaton5667 Yes , there are a number of good tracks on that album .
Interesting coincidence John, I've been listening to Communique a lot this week. I've still never heard Alchemy!
It's 50 quid on cd, only had alchemy so gifted that to my daughter and got this. Couldn't consider the vinyl at that price.
The cd set is a decent price but the vinyl set is outrageous

‘Sounds a bit like The Rutles’. Praise indeed!
I would love to have this set, but at nearly $400 Canadian I'll have to pass. We'll see if the price drops.
"Going on too long at the end" is really their weakness. Some great songs but so overplayed in many cases!
Live At The BBC is indispensable if only for What's The Matter Baby?
I have it and i like it, but it could have been done a better job, where is Eastbound train ?
Got the vinyl when 20% off well worth it

@matt The first 3 albums, sir; MAKING MOVIES is to my taste, superior to COMMUNIQUE, on-par with the brilliance of the debut!..

@matt Subjective indeed, sir; that said, my subjective taste is objectively superior to yours!.. 😉 All kidding aside, I appreciate your feedback!
I think that Sid McGuiness played guitar on the Making Movies. Strangely not credited.
