  • Using a beach umbrella mount to support a vertical antenna. Made SSB & FT8 contact on 10m with half wavelength vertical antenna with no radial.

Great tip! I'm about to attempt a QRP POTA activation tomorrow and I caught this in time to find a Amazon umbrella sand anchor available overnight. Cheers!

Good idea Peter, thanks for sharing.

When I heard the wind, I had my doubts about the antenna staying vertical in that sand!

The jump from 5 to 20W is a nice increment. It’s only an S point away from the $1.00 but doesn’t have the stupid current draw, and gives you an extra S point over 5W.
Nice power level to work CW.

A good power level for SSB where the duty cycle is a bit lower.

I guess it depends on how many IRF510s you want to send into orbit.
20W SSB is nice. 20W CW is definitely usable, though the X108G seems a little happier at 10W, where I usually run when on a battery for an extended period.
In the car it’s dimed. Full 20W
Still, it all comes down to conditions. One evening, George VK2AOE and I were using microphones, of all things, yes, who would have thought. Chatting on 40m with a back channel over the phone while I did some antenna tests.
So we’re talking Marrickville to Kogarah. 10 minute drive. On 40m we were getting phasing / comb filtering. I put it down to ground wave fighting an NVIS signal. Not nearly as pronounced on 80m and non existent on 14MHz
I’ve got video and audio of it somewhere

@@MidlifeRenaissanceMan it's always fun when you experience unexpected or anomalous RF conditions like you describe. 😮

A Totem tennis pole works for more solid ground. And they are cheap and commonly available.

Neat, i might get one. A 5m.pole is pretty light but I doubt it would support my regular pole which is a DXWire 10m unit with the top two sections removed so 8m. Its quite heavy. But good for a 20m wire as a 40m EFHW. 😊

This is great stuff! Does motivate to go experiment building antennas for beach, park, etc.

1:12 (Peter screwing the device into his lawn.) Here in Nova Scotia we might need to bring a hammer-drill, drill several holes into the rock, and then install our chosen mounting solution with lag bolts.

Hey, I made a video about what I'm hearing on the 40 CB channels yesterday and posted it on here. Can you make a video so that we can see what you're hearing? The SFI has been over 200 for a while now and propagation stinks.

I have already done many videos on 27 MHz reception when conditions have been good. Here's one: ruclips.net/video/orYtWEXTxzg/видео.html

@@vk3ye Here's what I've noticed... for the past two autumns and winters, propagation, especially the 10 meter band, has been in keeping with a normal solar cycle. The bands open up a few days after the fall equinox and close down a few days after the spring equinox. I live near Pittsburgh. Despite the SFI being over 200 propagation, in a word, stinks. I'm wondering if you have noticed the same thing down under or if it's the opposite of the Northern hemisphere.
