"I do nice work I'm just not real fast at it".. Morgan. I was in a car repair shop and saw a sign that said "We have three levels of work, good, fast and cheap, Pick any two." If it's good and fast, it won't be cheap. If it's fast and cheap, it won't be good, and if it's good and cheap, it won't be fast. Don't worry about fast, you have the rest of your life. You'll like good better. I was in my retirement years before I was able to realize that I'd always be building or doing something so just enjoy the process. No matter how fast you do something, you'll then do something else so why not enjoy what I'm doing now. At 80 I fear there will be no new projects like studios and shops and sheds for me anymore and that's why I enjoy watching you do all the work lol! That lumber looks great. The shed is going to look beautiful. Will be interesting to see how the red in the wood weathers out.
Im late! Good friday morning Morgans and friends. No one will be stealing Mike's new shed! After you get the two 2x10's up Mike, take some scrap 4x4 pieces and place a few across the front between your 2x10's vertically. That will keep them from becoming warped and wonky in the years to come and stiffens everything up too.Cabot for the win. I knew you would like it. See you all later this morning.
Hey Mike as a retired carpenter who has run his own business for 11+ years a few pointers: When cutting lumber with a hand saw I like to have the saw oriented so that the waste wood is on the 1-1/2 side of the saw plate, this keeps the saw more stable and insures a 90-degree cut. If I were building that shed and had a sawmill, I would not limit myself to 2x beams; I would cut a single 6-1/2" x 6 or 8. Knowing that you might be limited by the length of the beams you can cut on the mill an 8' length would be ok, but I would join them with a lap or scarf joint on top of the beam. Now I know that you do things the way you like to do things and that is that...just thought I'd throw out these apples on the pile to see if the deer gobble them up. Great video thumbs up.
I totally concur and absolutely would not expect anything else from you. That statement was absolute gold. "I do good work, I'm just slow." Not always, but most of the time, you work alone. You are retired. There's no punch clock or time card. You are doing exactly what you want to do. Heck yeah, you are enjoying life to the fullest. You do really good work, indistinguishable from a professional. Why would you hurry? I love that you go slow and talk to us as you go. It's much better for us when you go slow. The video will last longer, giving us more time w you and the project. You said the shed will look pretty good when finished!! That's confidence. That's experience. That's a fact. It was so nice to not hear you experiencing any back pain. Perfect work today, 2x4s, the skill saw, light duty...just what you need for at least a week. Remember, it's not always weight, it can be how you stoop, twist, or extend. Baby that back till it's better, and then treat it like it's made of glass. Good stuff today, Mike. Thanks.👍🚜❤️🙏🇺🇲🇺🇲
GOOOOOOOD MORNING TO ALL MY FELLOW OWTM’S FANS/FOLLOWERS!!…equipment shelter is coming along nicely. Looking forward to watching to completion. Have a day HELLOOOO HUNTER 😊
Looks very good Mike 👍. Crazy how fast the deer change behavior out of season. Even crazier is how fast whatever took down that pole was able to drive away.
It is so cool to see the raw wood as trees, cut and milled into beautiful lumber, and then used to build something useful. The ultimate in self sufficiency.
Hi Mike. Great video. Great job. You have a good roof pitch. Both 2 by 10s/12s will work for rafters. 2 by 8 rafters are good too. Agree w/ the weathering of red pine. ALL pines don't do well in wet land conditions. The tin roof is " pricey" now. We'll see. We'll. Say Hi to Melissa, Melissa's dad, Eva, Hunter, Levi, Kate, Tyler, & Hannah. These are for the ladies: 💐💐💐💐 Everyone have a good Thrusday night. 🥰😊😉🥶👍❤️💜🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🌫
Hi folks. Mike I used Cabot Australian Timber Oil on my new front porch and love it! It wasn't cheap. $250 for 5 gallons at Lowe's but it goes a long way. I also used it on my trailer deck. If you knotch the top of the front posts and set your boards it will give you plenty of load strength.
Mike, great work. You live in one of the best parts of the country. My sister is there. We are 3 hrs north. Its refreshing to see someone who works slower than than I do. I'm 62 but never worked all that fast. I usually take time to think a bit. Your building will outlast us. I figured I had 20 years left with good luck but now at 63, its down to 17.
We have not had a landline in over 20 years! In our area the telephone poles also carry internet coax and fiber lines so they don't get as much attention as power but with everyone (homes as well as business) that rely on an internet connection they get attention fairly quickly. New building is looking great! I generally like a 2 foot overhang on roofs, can't always get a 2 foot overhang but when I can I do 2'. Just hate those new buildings with virtually no overhangs. Our neighbor, a 78 YO widow, just bought a John Deere tractor with enclosed cab so she can to do snow plowing and work around her 5 acres, she described her new tractor as "cute" 🤣
Really enjoyed your video. I’m building a 20x40 slanted equipment shed. 11’ front clearance 10’ rear. (J Deere 5100e cab clearance). I’m using 2x6 horizontal wood with horizontal 2x10’s at the top of 6x6 treated posts. 3 rows of 6x6s where you have two (to shorten the rafter span). I’m about 1 day behind your videos. Wish I had your wood mill. My costs are higher! Thanks. Long time fan of your videos! Jim
Loved The Video the shed is coming along!! Gonna be nice when completed!! Except never Big Enough always find it could have been bigger! Don't forget the windows to use as a hunting blind!! Keep Smiling On!! 😅👍👊❤️
Afternoon Mike, Your little jigs for holding your lumber is very handy. I've used that before and they work great. Like you I never tried to go fast, but like you again when I did or do something it's usually going to last. Like another commenter said about taking your time and sometimes think things out as you go. Phone as pretty much a thing of our generation, at 68 I know you're still a kid. I think unless you have a fax line, land lines are pretty much over with. And this is provided people still use faxes. Who knows these days. Good video. 😊😊
Good construction Mike 👍 I agree with others that have said to do a 24" overhang. If you put a 2x10 or 2x12 header across the front on either side of the posts put spacer blocks in-between them spaced even with the rafters above them. It will increase the rigidity and limit warping and twisting. Good video 😊
Hi Mike! Landlines are truly becoming scarce for residential services. BUT, fiber to the home is still a landline, as you know. Businesses still generally have landlines but telephone/communications companies are quickly changing over to a fiber cable. Also, people think their wireless phone service doesn't require cable/landlines any longer but that is far from what actually happens. When you start dialing your wireless phone your phone actually connects to the nearest tower that your provider uses. Then your call connects to the antenna on the tower, which is cabled into the equipment at the bottom of the tower. Then the equipment connects to a fiber cable that goes to the area where your called telephone number is located by using more equipment. Then the fiber cable goes up the tower and the signal goes out to where your called subscriber happens to be located at that time. Fiber cable is used millions of times across the Country daily. So as you see the definition of what a person calls a landline. They do have "satellite service" available but most don't use it. There is a lag time when using a satellite that isn't really what people want to use. I know, I know, that you know the difference, I just thought I would let people know that there are a couple of definitions of landline. Thanks for your videos, I really enjoy following you and your family! J.R.
I imagine that the Timberlok screws that you've used before will work just fine for the headers both front and rear. It's going to be another nice shed. 👍🏼
I built a woodshed last summer with the same type of “Adirondack style” roof. I used clear plastic corrugated panels. They are available in many lengths. I like the natural light that shines through
Mike, check into metal slag, it’s a cheap and long lasting resurface for gravel base. It’s heavy duty and heavy material. Packed it over my driveway and it is almost like asphalt. Looks great too.
Amazing, Mike! Those boards you milled look 100 times better than the stuff at Lowes and Depot. And those deer have a calendar nailed to a tree with a big red X marking the end of hunting season! Jus' sayin'.
Overhangs protect the building. We have 42" overhangs all around our house and 24" on the garage. Rain hardly ever hits the house. Only happens if it's real windy
Mike: it is taking shape. I just finished my trailer lean-to. I used 2x6's for the top beam. Put the outside one on first for the rafter to sit on and then put the other 2x6 on the inside under the rafter. That way you can run 4x4's into the 2x6 space for 45 degree support. I do this due to the snow load here. All the best and stay safe. PS: the deer are just messing with you!
Great video Mike I love the idea of the deer knowing it’s safe to go out now seasons over 🤗 The road you laid down to the clearing is really established now It looks like it’s always been there Well done with all your projects ✊✊
Mike, love your new pole barn. I want to be the first one to say it, you wish you would’ve built it longer & maybe deeper. Ha Ha. Great video & keep them coming. Merry Christmas to you, your wife, your entire family, and all your viewers. I wish you & your family much success in the new year. Dave D. from Maine.👍🇺🇸
Good morning from Fuquay Varina, just outside of Raleigh, North Carolina. I have watched your videos for some time but finally subscribed. I retired a year and a half ago and love working doing projects around the house. My wife loves the benefits.I have a special needs son Nicholas (33 yrs. old) who has helped me out with some projects. I enjoy watching your videos! Have a great day!
We were down your way yesterday, or at least we saw signs saying you were this direction and distance. We were down playing Tobacco Road golf course. Most unusual course I’ve ever seen - built on an old sand quarry.
You can notch the top of that beam, just an inch and a 1/2 or the the 2 / 10 or 2 / 8 will set into that top of that 6 / 6N. N, you know that way, it'll be flush with a front. And then you add another something else to the front of it, to make your other extra inch and a half
Great looking work on the new Shed! It’s crazy to me the price of wood at these big box stores and the quality of the product. Last time I bought lumber at Lowe’s I had to go through it far to long to find lumber good enough to suit me and even then very few peices where Great. I know Alot of contractors will have them pull a lumber order and have it ready when they get there . Can’t imagine what they get LoL.
Shed is coming along nicely. You could (have) cut the 2x8/10's a full 2" and set them into the posts 1/2". That way you get some additional support and they match the 1.5" purlins.
The building is looking good ! I hope you are going leave access for your deer friends to get inside out of the blizzard that may come through before spring.
Still not sold on those wood screws. Used some on my raised beds built with hard wood lumber is spring and already seeing some broken screws as the lumber srinks and twists. Hope they wook better for you.
I have built using just lags to secure the top beam successfully but I believe it would be much better to notch the posts so the beams have a ledge to sit on and are not just secured with the strength of the hardware. Always enjoy your content.
Good morning Mike. Regarding the Simpson timber frame screws, Fasteners Plus was the best bargain I found and they sold larger containers than the big box stores typically carry.
For me, the first step in building anything bigger than a bird house is to knock out a set of nice sturdy saw horses. They each have a shelf down between the legs to set your tools on, up out of the snow and the mud. A good set of sturdy saw horses come in very handy, so much better than the corporate plastic folding crappy things you find at Lowes. I'd always used scaps to build my saw horses. Most of those saw horses are still in use today, twenty or more years later.
That Cabot's is good stuff. I stain my log home with the mahogany flame timber oil. It gets darker every application. Looks good and lasts several years in the S.C. sun and heat.
Oh trust me they care... As a telcom cable splicer that pole that carries the P.O.T.S.( plain old telephone service) lines also has your fiber optic cables that are replacing the old copper lines... I've been dispatched on similar accidents and amazes me how some manage to just disappear from the scene of the crime... job security.....lol
Mike , you could notch 1 1/2 out of post at the top and double up 2x10s for your beam. That way you would have good support and have your 1 1/2 sticking out for your purlins.
Love your channel and the work you do you seem to be a great Dad and husband you are blessed you have a beautiful home and business you work hard for your hole family just awesome Americana family🇺🇸👍🏼✌🏼 watching from North Carolina western North Carolina. I live where we got hit by hurricane Helene we are hanging in there hope you and your family have a merry Christmas
Building looking good….nice using the blocks/clamps to hold boards and keep level. Common sense but I never thought of that before. Not sure what that says about my senses, but will use that.
Mike, Cabot stains are made 25 minutes from my house in Newburyport, Massachusetts!! Nice little town right where the Mighty Merrimack river dumps into the Atlantic Ocean!
Mike, you make operating that excavator look easy! Years of practice I am sure. I hope you and the your family have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Morning Mike. Have watched your show for over 4 years now. Its my #1 YOu tube show to watch. You are a very hard worker, great family father and Husband. Be safe. Great Buck this year. Can ou someday take some time and let us know what you get back in return for sending your Buc to a slaughter House per say. thank you.
Your deer must be on the same email system our's is in North Dakota. Day before season starts, they go underground and the day after, they're all over the place.
I agree it's better for the house keep the water away from the foundation I believe all structures should have it at least a minimum of 18 inch overhang
Use the laser and mark the front posts for the header. Notch the posts in 1 1/2”. Set the circular saw to 1 1/2” make a series of cuts and chisel out. Structurally, this is the only way to go.
It has been a number of years ago, guessing 15+ (maybe several more), a road-grader operator clean off the county road side of the ditch. The ditches there were maintained by the same county department so he may have bern told to clean the ditch or decided on his own-still same department so all good with county. But years before the phone company had put there line (apparently not very deep on the road side of the ditch, the grader torn the phone line in many places about 2 dozen according to the phone repair man working on the line. He was frustrated as it had to patch the spots instead of doing 2 spots and replacing the damaged line. Land lines have been going away for some time. We still had one then, but at the time cell coverage was not good. We later did away with the land line as coverage improved.
Merry Christmas Slow is relative. Im slow but get more done than most, age and experience count... Those face applied beams should be fine, if you are worried then add a 2x cleat to the face of the posts to support them. You have the space I believe if you wrap those 2x siding supports. If you run 2 make sure to add a couple post sized spacers to keep them inline. Always enjoy the videos
G M Mike! 1) I like your videos, always. 2) Why is this shed away from your other one, close to your work place? 3) Why does the deer season expires so quickly? Who decides and why so short? Be well, from New Fairfield CT
Well, Mike, if you still watch Andrew Camarata you may have seen in his latest video he also bought a ca am defender and that thing was like a tank going through the mud bogs. I knew they were tough and powerful, but it surprised me how easily he took it through those huge ruts full of mud and water and pretty deep. That was fun to watch at the end of his video.. He also took a trip with his buddy and a group of guys to West Virginia on the Kentucky border to ride they're long trails and up on the high steep mountains.really cool scenery. Then I seen why his buddy asked him to go. The guys truck had a mechanical issue with drive shaft and in the long run Andrew took it off after his dad drove 3 hrs with the right tools for the job. Andrew is always a great guy to bring along on a trip but also for any breakdowns with the sideXsides or 4 wheelers or trucks and trailors their traveling with.
I like to ledger cut the top of the post if I use a single 2x8 to support rafters, on a lightweight roof. So notch 8" high 1.5" deep, rest horizontal beam on 1.5" , screw, no need to bolt, just saying
Mike I hunt also and sometimes I think deer have a hunting and regulations book in their heads. Like an internal calendar 🗓️ that they know when the last day of hunting is. Because they sure come out of the woodwork the day after last day of season 😂🤣
There's no priority on landlines unless... It has fiber optics lines those are still in high use for lots of electronics used in stores gas stations businesses and homes.. 😅 by the way your gravel roads look great that roller compactor did a good job. From what I see I don't see any runoff the roadway..
Even though deer and elk are supposed to be color blind, I've suspected many years ago when I used to hunt the mountains of CO that the brightness of the orange creates a learned response.
Just a thought if you only let the blade on your saw only go past the board about a 1/4 inch it cut faster and the battery will last longer, reducing drag and amp draw.
Great video Mike. That is excellent lumber that you won't find at the local Box Stores. Quick question about the F350, do they also have the aluminum body panels too like the F150's. Nice and light if it does
Good morning Mike, building/shed looks good Have you thought about using your "cants" for siding? It would use some up and fit the local area. Just a thought
You mean slabs? A lot of sawmill owners do exactly that and use up their slabs. Most of them like the rustic look of the natural half round or even bark.
I was talking to a guy that builds dome greenhouses. He said he buys pressure treated 2X8s and cut them for 2X4s when he builds. For whatever reason the 2X8s are generally cut better. What about that hemlock you got awhile back? Have you got enough to use that for siding? Looks good though Mike! I may need to use your pattern here in the spring myself.

Nice to know the deer know their safe for awhile.
Good morning from Kentucky . Hope everyone has a wonderful day .
Glad to finally see some building, take care Mike
Mike, you can notch your post 1&1/2 and then double your 2×10. You will have your weight on the post with an 1inch and half on the front.
Remember to let your back heal up Mike! Building is looking great!
Good morning y'all !!! Have a great day, and hello from British Columbia
Hey thanks Merry Christmas to you as well. Thanks for watching and hope you all are recovering ok from the hurricane
Thank you, same to you and yours
Thanks Mike, just picked up a good tip for installing those 2x4s when working alone which is 99% of my work.
I saw a roller attachment for a skid steer it rolls and vibrates to compact stone . You might want to see if you can find one for yours .
good idea!
Excellent mike 😊
🔥😎
Morning from Elk Grove CA Mike and family!
Man that is some beautiful wood!
Starting to take shape and the she'd will look great
It has been a number of years ago, guessing 15+ (maybe several more), a road-grader operator clean off the county road side of the ditch.
Looking good!
Good morning Mike
Going way down to 12 Sun night and 15 Sat night. Were going to get snow Friday..not a lot.
Good morning Morgan family!
Watching from Ontario, Canada 🇨🇦
(The 51st state ? )
I like overhangs too.
Mike those telephone poles carry high speed internet cables. Some people also have VOIP telephone service.
Merry Christmas
Slow is relative.
Great video, Mike! Thanks.
Thanks for watching!
Yup, notch the top of the front posts for the 2x6 to sit in.
The shed is looking good.
Even though deer and elk are supposed to be color blind, I've suspected many years ago when I used to hunt the mountains of CO that the brightness of the orange creates a learned response.
Looking good dude!!! Great lumber there too . What a man cave that would make,or a still!hehehe, just kidding Mike. God bless you all.hi Hunter.
Nice and light if it does
Good morning to Hunter 👋👋, and family and friends , happy Purrrsday everyone 😸😺
Good Morning BadCat..... get out the long Johns for the weekend.....
Hi BadCat! 😸
@@peteatthefarm4459 / hoping I won't have to 😹
@@davidmorse8432 / 👍😸
Good morning Mike, building/shed looks good Have you thought about using your "cants" for siding? It would use some up and fit the local area. Just a thought
You mean slabs? A lot of sawmill owners do exactly that and use up their slabs. Most of them like the rustic look of the natural half round or even bark.
Hello! 😊
Morning David, cooling off, then cold on the weekend..... hope your day is a good one..... enjoy
Good morning David , happy Purrrsday 😸
Morning
☕️🍳
@@JohnSmith-tv5ep Good morning John!
Mike, what will you be storing in this shed and what are its dimensions?
Mike how about sandwiching some 2x10 together with the ends offset to build a beam?
Carl
Have the front beam partly rebated into the posts, and maybe the back one too
Notch your 6x6 for the 2 x to sit on then bolt
Looks nice. We got termites any wood that touches the ground gets ate. I guess it freezes too hard there and kills all of them?
I was talking to a guy that builds dome greenhouses. He said he buys pressure treated 2X8s and cut them for 2X4s when he builds. For whatever reason the 2X8s are generally cut better. What about that hemlock you got awhile back? Have you got enough to use that for siding? Looks good though Mike! I may need to use your pattern here in the spring myself.
I've always said that it does seem like they know it maybe it's a time thing they have gotten used to i don't know lol
Thank you for the video.
Thanks for watching
Great video!
