Roger Taylor could've fronted his own band if he wasn't in Queen with the greatest front man to ever exist. Nobody talks about that perfectly placed drum fill towards the end of Brian's guitar solo but I am.

Freddie was a huge fan of Aretha Franklin. This is his tribute to her. Yes, he takes us to church! An example of how tight and in tune this band was to each other, the second time Freddie gets up from the piano and walks towards the front of the stage, you see Freddie look towards the back of the stage and you can see Brian May walking to the back of the stage. He’s broken a guitar string and is going back to repair it. Freddie improvises and stretches things out. The shot expands, you see John Deacon slapping his bass, you see Freddie look to the back of the stage. Seeing that Brian has completed his guitar string repair Freddie picks up where he left off on the song, and Brian walks back to the front of the stage. The band is so close to each other, John and Roger easily follow Freddie’s lead without dropping a beat. For a funky beat do Dragon Attack from the same Montreal show.

  • @donnalong402

Yes, the drummer (Roger Taylor) can sing. As can the lead guitarist (Sir Dr. Brian May). In any other band they could very well be lead singers, but, hey, Queen had Freddie Mercury. They each have their own bands and are lead singers in them.
And, yes, Sir Dr. Brian May was Knighted by King Charles and has his doctorate in astrophysics and has done work with NASA. Roger Taylor has a degree in biology, and studied dentistry for a bit. The bassest, John Deacon, (who doesn't often sing) has a degree in electrical engineering. Freddie had a degree in fashion and graphic design and designed the band's logo.
You should react to Queen's set at Live Aid. Look for the one about 23 minutes long. It starts with a couple of comedians dressed as London police officers. Watch the first 10 seconds or so and you will know if you have the correct one. There is a slightly shorter version, but it has been edited and some of the final song is cut. Freddie had a bad throat infection at Live Aid, and perfomed against his doctor's orders.

If you'll notice at about the 8 minute mark, Brian May walks back stage because he had a string break. Look how flawlessly Freddie and Roger on drums engage the audience to give Brian time to get his guitar restrung. Superb....

My favourite period of Queen is the 1970s (what I think of as Freddie's long hair/ black fingernails period), and from that I can recommend two very special live performances:
White Queen - Live at Hammersmith Odeon, 1975
You Take My Breath Away - Live at Hyde Park, 1976
You'll be blown away by either of these, though in different ways, since they're very different songs, differently performed. Both about obsessive love relationships. One written by Brian (lead guitar, wild curly hair, astrophysicist in his spare time) and one by Fred (lead vocalist, evolving hairstyle, ex-graphic art/fashion student,) both about real people they knew. And both take-your-breath-away magical.

Freddie is untouchable. I love how Freddie and Roger Taylor (the drummer) harmonize together. There are so many songs that I'm sure that you have heard of a couple of them. May I recommend Under Pressure live at Wembley (the 5:56 minute version). The interaction he has with the crowd is amazing. Another One Bites The Dust live a Wembley is a good one also. White Queen live at the Odeon Hammersmith '75, Don't Stop Me Now (the official video) and of course LiveAid which was considered the best 20 minute live performance.

Thanks again HBK, another great reaction... the band created their own genre, which is why the Main Stream Media gave Queen such a difficult wrap in the tabloids, because they refused to be thrown into a catagory... so everything they said and did was highly scrutinized... this song was Freddie's tribute to Aretha Franklin... blessings.
P.S. Might I suggest some early Queen that highlights all the talents of every member.. the song "Liar" showcases the members of the band in each individual respective solos... also "White Queen", a mesmerizing "conversation" between piano and guitar... or "March of the Black Queen", what some people have recognized as the prequel masterpiece to "BoRhap"... enjoy!! Blessings.

Undeniably one of the greatest live performances by any band, anytime. Thank you for your reaction. Freddie said this song was a nod to Aretha Franklin, who he truly admired and always wanted to sing with. Sadly they never got the opportunity, but if there is a band in heaven, you can be sure they are totally rockin' it. Queen never stuck to any sort of genre, all four members were songwriters and all had different tastes in music. Also, each of them had number 1 hits Freddie considered this song as a rather gospel style and tribute to Aretha,

I'll agree that their live performances are impressive but Queen's studio recordings are not to be missed! Some songs translate to a live performance better than others. "Somebody To Love" is awesome either way. The studio version is more melodic with superb harmonies. Some of my album favorites were never performed live.
A note about that Superman tank, it sold at an auction of Freddie's belongings last year for $57,000. USD.

Hello darling love your reaction, Queen is the best band ever to me and millions of others. You cannot put them in a category, they are in a class by themselves. There are so many great songs from them, always the live shows , they are perfect., if you think this was gospel, take a listen to who wants to live forever live at Budapest you will see the power in Freddie’s voice. Of course Live Aid. Another song I think you’ll love COOL CAT, and Stone Cold Crazy live at Hammersmith. Freddie perfected the art of singing. Welcome to the Queen Army. Queen was always better live than recorded, they were so good, they were better than any editing equipment the studio had. The editing actually took away their talent instead of helping it like it did for other artists. If you come across a recorded song you don't think you like, find it live first before you decide. I did not care for "Radio Gaga" at first and then saw them do live at "Live Aid" and it became one of my favorites. Welcome to the rabbit hole, it'll be one you enjoy, Queen never disappoints :)

I’m so happy to see someone recognize everything there was to with Queen, even as early as you’ve been reacting to them. Everyone says the Live Aide concert was the best, and it was, but I just love his live version of “You Take My Breath Away” in Hyde Park, 1976. But honestly, it would be hard to go wrong with any suggestions. They have (I think) 14 studio albums and a few live ones, and several greatest hits ones, as they were a relevant 20 year band before Freddie Mercury passed in 1991, RIP, dear Freddie. So many songs, so much history, and honestly, they were so diverse, people called them rock, but no one could pigeon hole them, they wanted to try it all, experiment,. They were real ground breakers, and Freddie the most legendary musical genius … and Roger and Brian are still touring under the Queen name (Queen with … mostly Adam Lambert) to this day. I can’t listen to anyone singing in place of Freddie, but what could these musical geniuses do? “The Show Must Go On”, one of his last recordings, though he sang until almost the end, but…the show just go in, yes, Freddie. Though my heart belongs only to Queen plus Freddie, and to Roger and Brian individually. Thanks for your great reaction!!

Fantastic reaction my man! Instant sub.
It's great to think Freddy could be looking down seeing people's reactions to something he did 43 years ago and he (and Queen) are STILL affecting people's emotions and lives!
And yep, I always feel the Gospel in this one, he mentions the Lord, he sings it Gospel style and the music has a mixture of it with Rock too, I think it's reaching an audience more via RUclips now than maybe it did back in the 80s.
I turned more to early Hip-Hop and early House for emotions and power (Tribe Called Quest, Frankie Knuckles etc) but this, this is a powerhouse of emotion and has maybe helped a lot of people through testing times.
Anyway thanks man, this was such a good reaction!

When Freddie went forward to get the crowd involved it was partly because Brian broke a guitar string. Queen was so good that no one noticed and this version was saved rather than the one recorded on the other night.
There were performances on two nights and the producers wanted the band to wear the same outfits on both nights so they could cut and paste (no digital yet) the best parts of each song. The band refused to do that and so when you react to different songs from this concert you'll notice (I hope) that they're in the different outfits sometimes.
BTW, NEVER interrupt Brian's guitar solos!! 😊

This is one of the most fun reactions to this song I've seen. I can feel your joy, awe, and appreciation.
You should check out Queen's "Don't Stop Me Now"

They are not to be categorized. They were pure rock, heavy rock and roll, progressive rock, thrash metal, grunge, anthem singers, opera, ..... before some of these were even invented. Immense catalog.

They didn't have any particular jonra they stuck to as they did a bit of everything. That was why they were so successful as they appealed to all tastes.

This song is “going to church”. He admired Aretha Franklin and you hear it in this song.

you must do a much needed reaction to their biggest hit in the USA, before Michael Jackson! He was a huge enfluence on MJ. Check out Another One Bites the Dust. They were unsure about releasing this as a single and MJ said "definitely do it, it will be a hit"!

You should seriously consider watching Fleetwood Mac do Go Your Own Way. It’s a great rocker too. The 1997 performance.
