During the first part of the summer, the blackberries along the river are huge and delicious! I lived there as a boy from 73-76 and spent my summers biking around having fun, we used to play on the catwalk of that Dunsmuir Ave. bridge. While there, I saw my first steam engine on the Freedom Train.

I would love to live in Dunsmuir. We discovered it by accident. We were on the train to Portland when there was some problem with the tracks before Shasta. The train came back and let us off in this town as it was gonna be laid up for a while. I fell in love with it and visit often.

Hi Phillip, I visited Dunsmuir 30 years ago. I used to run the area for training. The next time you're in town let me know. We'll buy y'all a cup of coffee and show you what we have discovered as a new resident. We can do lunch at the Wheel House by the Depot. Spring is a good time, (summer is a bit hot) but the best time to visit is the fall. Dave/Jana

I live there for a couple years as a boy in the 70’s, not much has changed since then as far as the layout of the town but there’s a LOT less children there since white people basically quit having kids for the last 25 years. So if you want to settle there it’s just below the snow line for average snow storms but it does snow during the winters, in 74 we had a BAD blizzard there that dumped a few feet of snow overnight. If given the choice, I’d choose to live in Mt. Shasta city a few minutes north, the summer temperatures are gentle and it gets more snow during the winter months but it’s between Dunsmuir and Redding in the south and Yreka and Weed in the north. There’s a lot of railroad history in the area so you’ll see steam engines come through Dunsmuir a couple times a year.

We visited Dunsmuir in 2015 and thought it would be a nice town for retirement. Would still want to work some. I am a private piano instructor and piano tuner technician. Any chance my type of business would be something people may like. Your thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks! Subscriber number 32. Fishing is a big draw for me as well.

Hi John, thanks for connecting with me. Yes, my wife and I moved here to retire 2 years ago from a fast pace society (So Cal). I thank God I was able to find a comfortable home to live in and enjoy the area. Since we are at 2500 feet. We don't get a lot of snow and we are 5 degrees warmer in the winter that Mt Shasta. I'm not sure about the music needs up here John. I just learned that the student population has slowed dramatically this year. Dunsmuir HS only has 50 plus kids. And some are leaving for Mt Shasta. It's hard to have a sports program with limited kids. Since this town is mainly a tourist stop, (ie; fishing, hiking) even the local business struggle up here. (ie; cafe, burger places). Hopefully, you'll visit Dunsmuir soon. There is so much more to 'chat' about, and when you do, we could chat about the area over coffee, and tour the area. Dave

@@ocmrdave9409 Thank you for your response and the very generous offer for a tour of the area. Most of my students are in grade school and they dwindle off around High School age as they get busy with other interests. We are in So. Calif. [south Riverside County] and have a successful business built up so it is hard to give it up, but the mountain town with a trout stream running through it is calling my name. John
