    I'd like to share some of my experience, too. Some is from own experience, most is from the owner of the beadshop I am working at (she is an official Rocailles Beading Master, aknowledged by the japanese ministry of art and culture) and some from workshops from other beaders.
    The difference between bees wax and thread heaven is, that thread heaven doesn't make the thread sticky.
    Fireline is very tightly braided. You actually don't need to wax or condition it with anything. You can get fireline far cheaper at the fishing store, the quality is actually the same. It is one of the strongest threads there is. You can cut it with normal scissors.
    Wildfire is also tightly braided, but: it has an extremely thin wire in the center. That's why wildfire is stiffer than fireline. Also no waxing or conditioning needed. You can not cut it with normal scissors.
    Nymo, One-G, etc is not braided as tight. You need to wax or condition it (don't forget to let the conditioner dry before using). It is not as strong as fireline, it breaks easier, and you can pierce the thread with your needle, when you go several times through a bead. I really don't recommend it when you work with Swarovski Xillion crystals or anything else with sharp edges. You should cut it with normal scissors.
    Monofilament thread is best from fishing stores, they are also very strong as they are used for fishing. They are not braided but made in one single piece and are amazing for more simple designs, where the thread could show but you don't have to go through the rocailles several times (I never use it when there are 15/0s in the design). No wax needed, you can cut it with normal scissors.
    And some general things: Fireline, Wildfire and Monofilament are very strong, but when the thread gets creases, they get very weak at the creased point and break easily.
    Knots also weaken the thread, you can make them, but better avoid them (Sabine Lippert never makes knots).
    When the thread breaks, there can be several reasons. Mostly they break at the weakened points. Sometimes the thread breaks, because it gets cut by the Swarovski crystals. And sometimes it breaks, because you pull too hard or the tension is too strong.
    You can avoid breaking your thread, if you make sure that you don't rub it on the pearls or crystal when you pull. You just have to make sure that you pull your thread in the same direction that the needle came out of the pearl (e.g: when pull your needle through a piece you are holding in your left hand, and the hole, where the needle comes out is facing right, you do not pull the thread towars you, or away from you or upwars, but you pull the thread to the right from you.), that prevents the thread from getting damaged or cut.
    And NEVER use any kind of glue if you want your jewellery to last longer than a few years. Not for securing the knots and not for anything else. Glue makes the thread brittle over time and it breaks. That goes for every glue and for every thread. There is nothing wrong with using glue on the pearls, though.

      I tried the nymo d and I hate it. I will use it if I'm doing not loom work. I love fireline for loom and non-loom work. I have kids and toddlers pull and yank. I find fireline in the heavier test (10-20 pound) would work best for any project that will get lots of wear and tear from constant use like key chains, belts, and lanyards.

    Wildfire tends to be stuffer than Fireline. I use it when I need more stability and less drape. I color my crystal fire line with permanent markers to closer match my beads. I also pull my smoke Fireline through a dryer sheet to remove the powdery substance that stains my hands. it also helps keep the Fireline from tangling. It really works!!

    Good info for beginners and experienced beaders alike on an important topic. You can't string beads without the string!
    I hope you don't mind me adding a little more info. Other threads that provide flexibility are three from Japan; One-G by Toho that you mentioned, Miyuki and So-No. These are all nylon threads I believe and very, very thin. They are good for intricate designs that require a LOT of thread passes through small beads. I agree Fireline is the best but because Nymo comes in so many colors, it can be a good choice for pieces that show a lot of thread along the the edges like brick stitch, loom work and Peyote for example. Last, regarding claims I have heard that Beadsmith Fireline is different from the Fireline purchased at sporting goods stores or departments for half the price, I have chosen the better value of sporting goods suppliers, have done a gazillion projects and end up with the same durable, professional looking piece. Then I use the savings for MORE BEADS!!!

    I use the 10lb Fireline on the Magic Carpet bracelet and any other heavy piece, particularly if they have crystals that will be moving a lot. Otherwise, I use 6 lb the most. I love the green fireline for and green pieces.

    Hi Stephanie great information I use most of the threads you have talked about and yes I enjoy fireline..I also use power Pro 10lb test (it is similar to between 4lb and 6lb fireline in my opinion) ...which gives me a better drape than fireline when I need to have strength but a good drape to an item. But for drapes in jewellery you really can't beat the various threads like nymo etc.. Looking forward to your embroidery beading tutorials in the future ...blessings

    I found the thread you were talking about "Power Pro Braided Beading Thread .005 Inch White - 28 Yds 7.49" a bit high for only 28 yards of it! I ordered it anyway, the "power pro scissors" I haven't found, I'll try my Cabela's fishing scissors. I want to try this thread and will let you know how it worked. Thanks for your time!

      thank yoooooou. so nice you say that.lt s very important to work whit a good thread. another tip that l find important is whit the wax. specialy the thread heaven. l use c lon and one g some times. for some designs. and than l surely wax it. than l have learned to let it dry for a while before l work whit it. the wax makes the thread a bit wet. l wax it and strech it out and than l let the thread dry after that for 30 minutes of so. much beter to work whit. much less problems whit messing.l like the name of the video by the way. first you have done the let s talk colors that l loooooved.full of inspiraties.and now you make lets talk thread. l like it. top.

    I use Thread Heaven on all Fireline and it makes a huge difference in preventing tangles and getting through tight spaces. Fireline certainly does break, even 8 lb., all the time. Make sure you try not to undo, take apart part of a project and reuse that thread if it's separating! Certainly, many bicones in a project will most definitely snap a thread! Fireline does need Thread Heaven which is softer than cold weather wax, and it coats better. Use it often in your project and you, the thread, the durability of your project, will be better, happier and more successful.

      Adam Beadworks, the manufacturer, went out of business. We had a large plant with many seamstresses and all had that wax on top of their machines. It's like a rock even in our GA winters. Thread Heaven is so pliable it can be moved in it's tiny box with a finger. Now Thread Magic and Bead Buddy Thread are being used at Beadsmith Miss Betty said.

    Thank you for your tutorials Stephanie! Another Firreline beader here :-) I use the 4 pound for pretty much everything, earrings in majority but seems to hold my bracelets just fine too. When I needed a stronger test (10 pound) for a capricho bracelet I went to our local angling shop and bought 10 meters of the reel for a couple of quid. That saved me investing in the whole reel that would not get used any time soon. Wildfire is good for structure and in designs when there are not too many passes in any given bead, especially 11/0 &15/0.And for any beaders in the UK, I found a 300yd spool of 6lb test fireline for £19.99 online. I normally pay £17.99 for a 125yd spool. So there is my next investment.

    Thanks for the tips. Honestly, figuring out what thread to use is the biggest frustration. Also, whether to use thread or beading wire? What are the guidelines to wire or thread? I guess for some people that might sound like a stupid question but when someone is first starting the number of choices are just overwhelming. I would be interested in your opinion about beading wire/thread verses Fireline.

    • @BronzeponyBeadedJewelry
      @BronzeponyBeadedJewelry  6 лет назад

      You’re welcome 😉 Thread such as Fireline, Wildfire, One G, SoNo, are used for weaving with a needle. The project dictates the thread. So something very soft and flexible needs a flexible thread. I like Fireline in its various diameters for most weaving. Wire is metal in various diameters and isn’t generally used for weaving. Use it for stringing beads. Wire is also used for wrapping stones and wire wrapping projects. Hope this helps 😊

  • @AldoSchmedack
    @AldoSchmedack 5 лет назад +1

    Power Pro is stronger than Kevlar, Steel, Titanium or anything Nylon. It is THE strongest fiber in the world right now (2018). It is basically Dynema/UHMWPE and I use it for fishing and beading amongst many other uses too (I have a lot of hobbies). I have seen newer bullet proof vests made of it. It is that strong. It will wear your cutters unless made of carbide, but if only doing a few cuts anything will cut it (to try it out). It even wears carbide if doing a lot of cutting. It is a bomb proof thread and I really don't know why people don't try it other than it's cost and lack of people knowing about it. It is worth the price. Check Amazon for the best deal.
    As far as determining sizes, go by inch, not numbers or feel. 0.010" is far more repeatable measurement wise than saying 'x' or 'y', #1 or 000, or 5/0. It is something that can't be reduced

  • @sftraub
    @sftraub 6 лет назад +1

    For the money, availability and uses, Fireline beats all of the others. Wildfire can be stripped because it is coated. Power pro is hard to find, expensive and requires and extra tool and monofilament turns brittle and can break apart. It also has less flexibility making the t harder to knot off. The original beading threads like Nymo, C-Lon and others tangle stretch and just don’t have the strength of Fireline.

      Thank you for the information! Always appreciate and I love learning about threads I haven’t used! Power Pro is one I haven’t tried 🌻

    Stephanie great video! It was 8.5 yrs. ago when I first started making jewelry. Putting bicones on a head pin and some spacers, seeds etc... then beads on wire, etc...I was hooked and wanted to learn more. I remember 4yrs. ago when I first learned RAW and started beading with thread, I didn't know which one to use? As a new beader I would buy and try. I still consider myself a beginner/novice beader and I have just touched only the very tip of the iceberg. This "Basics series" for newbies is great, and will be very valuable. With all the informative comments I've been reading...well, learning is never-ending. Again you always bring it. Thank you so much! As always...Bead on! :-)
    Oh by the way, how much snow did you get over there? Today we are cold in MN. I'm suburbs of St. Paul. We're 3°, windchill is -10 ° tomorrow and Sunday much of the same. Stay in and bead weather. You and yours be safe, and take care Stephanie.

    Power pro is a fishing line made from spectra fiber (competitor to dyneema fibers in fireline) 10lbs compatible to 6lb fireline 15lb compatible to 8lb fireline. Cut it with fisker kids school scissors like fireline.But u can get braid fishing line scissors at Walmart. It comes in moss green at sporting goods stores. Beadsmith version is white. Powerpro is what people used before fireline. Also new thread out durathread ,myuki duraline. Both are basically polyethylene braided fishing line(what powerpro fireline spiderwire etc are made from)
    Knock off for duraline on Amazon is hercules pe braid line its cheap for large spools. 6lb/8lb $7 -$21 for 100yd 300yd 500yd 1000yd. Check out odins musings vid on fishing line beading thread for more info....

    Hi Stephanie. Love your videos. They are so clear and informative. I am new to beading and recently switched from wire to Fireline. I haven't learned to do weaving yet, but I like to make very chunky bracelets that are multi strand. I switched to Fireline because I wanted a drape that was similar to thread. But I was disappointed that after two tries using the Fireline Crystal 4 lb thread, one or more of the strands broke. I can't figure out why. The method I used was to tie all the ends together into a knot. Then I added hypo cement to the knot for added security. I then tied the knot to a head pin and threaded the head pin through a bead cone. I took a picture of it but I don't see a way to upload photos. The bracelet is twisty. The strands were knotted through each other multiple times to create that effect. I don't know if the breakage occurred because of the twisting or if any of my strands came loose from the knot. I find that knotting Fireline is a bit tricky. I don't know if maybe there was a metal burr left on my head pin. Or perhaps the line I chose isn't sturdy enough? I used mainly 6/0 seed beads with some 6 mm beads. The bracelet contains about 16 strands. Any thoughts would be much appreciated. Thanks.

    • @BronzeponyBeadedJewelry
      @BronzeponyBeadedJewelry  6 лет назад

      +Shelby Michaels Hi Shelby🌻 In my opinion 4lb Fireline is not sturdy enough for the beads you use. Have you tried SoftFlex beading wire or Soft Touch? They are both threadlike in their drape - especially Soft Touch. You could try 10lb Fireline but I still prefer a thin beading wire for multi strand pieces. Hope this helps😉

      Bronzepony Beaded Jewelry Thanks so much for your response. I hope you will indulge one followup question. I cannot believe how confusing it is to navigate the vast array of beading products! I purchased the soft touch .010 beading wire because I want to maintain the fluidity of thread. I use glass czech beads and crystal bicones a lot. Is the .010 adequate or do you think I should get a larger diameter? Also since the .010 can be knotted why does the company recommend finishing the piece with crimp tubes? Why not just tie it off like fireline? Thanks for your help!

    oh if only I had of found your channel early this morning I would of saved my self six hours trying to work out what fishing line to buy....lol and it just so happens I had a 6Ib reel from years ago when we used to go fishing and it was brand new...LOL. thanks for making this video. Beautiful necklaces and bracelets where do you buy your beads from?

    My Kmart and Walmart have never sold Fire-line, I look for it at them every time I go to them. I always have to buy it on line. I use wild fire also. Wildfire is great for loom work.

      Lorraine try your local sporting goods store for the fireline if Wal Mart doesn't have it. Wildfire is back on my beading table as a result of reading all these great comments💖

      Scheels Sporting Goods is the cheapest I have found fireline 125 yards for $13.99 and can be purchased on their website. 😬 I do like Wildfire as well. I don’t think I’ve had anything break with it. It is heavier than Fireline. Love all you videos Stephanie!! I’ve learned so much from you and you’ve inspired me greatly! I’ve followed you from your start when I was just learning beadweaving. Thank you so much!! 😍💐😬

    Thank you for your videos. They are always so informative. I'm a Fireline fan and use 6 and 8 for everything. I use 4 lb for earrings. I bought the 10 lb and found it didn't work as well as the 6 or 8. It frayed and became very loose like it lost the braiding. I did not care for how it performed. Keep posting a teaching you're great at it!

    What do you use to cut your Fireline? I have some embroidery scissors I have been using, but I never can get a nice clean cut. Wispy ends don't work for threading needles. Thanks a bunch and happy beading, Jenn

    • @BronzeponyBeadedJewelry
      @BronzeponyBeadedJewelry  3 года назад +1

      I use any scissor I have to cut fireline. Fireline dulls most scissors so I replace them often. If I come across one that stays sharp I’ll let you know. I hold the thread taught when cutting and flatten the end with a flat nosed pliers before threading my needle 😀

    i cant wait for your next video, I love listening to you! I really liked the brick stitch bracelet with the size 6 seed beads, Please do another with the size 6 seed beads. Out of curiosity, what sold the most at craft shows?

      +S.A. M. Awww she's adorable! Love little cuties you can cuddle around your neck :) I will be using size 6/0 seeds again Sara :) When I sold at craft shows, necklaces and bracelets sold the fastest as many were bought as gifts and as long as they could be sized there wasn't a problem about whether the piece would fit. During the holidays anything crystal and in the warm summer months gemstone beaded item sold best (because they were cool to the skin) Many 6/0 seed bead casual bracelets like Peyote & Square Stitch Bracelet sold to both males and female customers.
      Uni-sex jewelry always sold. Hope that helped!

    I just found this video that you made quite sometime ago and it was fortuitous because I am trying to make a decision as to what kind of stringing material to use for a long necklace made almost wholly of seed beads. It has 6 Long strands which will have to be knotted together.
    I know that Fireline would work well as far as the hang of the necklace and the ease of knotting. However, occasionally I’ve had a problem with Fireline braking in a simple bracelet with 8lb thread.
    I even saw someone on the Internet making a multi strand knotted seed bead necklace using 19 strand .010 beating WIRE from Beadalon.
    What do you think? Should I try the beading wire or should I just go ahead with Fireline?

      Hi there. For what you are trying to do beading wire (soft flex,soft touch even beadalon) is your best bet with 49 strands. That will be the most durable, give you the most drape and is the strongest. You'll need to finish the ends with crimp beads or crimp tubes. I hope this helps you out. Sincerely, Melissa Doucette

I'm a beginner, been beading for about 4 or 5 months and I've really learned a lot from your tutorials and made some of your pieces and enjoyed doing them. thank you again. I love fireline too.
    but I broke it . I didnt use bicones or bugle beads.
    I dont know how I did it, and not one time.
    was 0.15 mm or 0.006 . its the same I guess. here in Europe we mesure it with mm.
    I took 0.17 from a fishing on line shop and I am about to test it.

    G'Day My Wonderful Master, Might I ask where were you a couple of years ago when I started to bead? The thread part was the most annoying thing (to me as a new comer to beading) and still is as far as cost goes as a reel (from the fishing gear shop) is $29.50 for 145 mts .... that's a lot on my budget. The fishing thread I use is 10 lb but it seems to be thinner than the 6 lb beading thread and seems to give a slightly looser finish (even though I am tight when it comes to tension) and that is strange as in needlework I am an even tension and in knitting and crochet I a loose. Did I hear twice the magic word...."Bead Embroidery" and did I hear that down the track you are going to tackle a project..... my second "grand master piece is going to be bead Embroidery and as I am nearing the finishing line on the first one (which is all bead forms e.t.c) so I can do mine then you can use it as a demo on not what to do when you bead Embroider. I can't wait to see what you do! In your last comment of your last video you said that you didn't have the tools to stimulated your sense of awareness but you do and I hope that you got my meaning with answering your doubt. I haven't heard any thing about Bernie lately.... has he left home to find his fortune beyond your garden gate? Has he retired to the warm climate on the mantel piece above the glowing fire? Fame is like mountain climbing... going up, reaching the top then going back down... it's hard work to get to the top and then it's short lived on top only to come tumbling down the other side. Or due to his "fame" as he become a "carrotalcoholic" and now is unable to work because of his addiction? And does that mean that you and your family now seek counseling to help deal with his addiction? Great video and I am looking forward to your next one. Hi to Andrew, a big hug for Hubby. Stay very, very warm my masterful little polar bear.... Blessings......XXOOX

    Love the new video series Stephanie! It helps us newbies a lot. I tried the nymo and didn't like it at all (it splits into a mess) so far I have used wildfire, it works for me! (can you really use the fishing fireline?)I wouldn't think it usable for beading! Do we have to condition it a special way?

    Stephenie, I'm sorry, sent you separate comments on thread, then again on your great video. Now this one. But have a question. What kind of camera do you use? I had once mentioned, I had thought about giving RUclips a shot, but I have the RA. I'm going to practice and see how it goes. But any camera suggestions would be great? Now, YOU did get hammered with a lot of snow! And you're cold too! We usually get a lot of snow, we are under our average this yr. and way warmer than normal. We did get the -25, -30 windchills 2wks ago. We're warming also, Tuesday 30s, Heatwave!!! Alright, you have 100s of more lovely comments to read! Don't want to keep you from them. Thanks again!

    Hi. Thank you for your video. What is the best string to use for beaded ID lanyards? I’m having them either split or break then the beads fly everywhere.

    • @BronzeponyBeadedJewelry

      It depends on the beads and pattern you are using. If Fireline is breaking try Wildfire. If the beads are just strung on try monofilament or flexible beading wits.

    Dear Stephanie, what is the best way to cut Fireline thread? I use my thread snipper, but it doesn't cut very easily unless I hold the Fireline taut and give it a few tries. And, I've found that my snipper is getting dull from my repeated efforts. I don't want to get a thread burner to do it, if possible...thank you for your advice!

    I had some real disappointment with 4lb Fireline. It tore in a couple of my projects. The bead holes were tiny for 2 passes, so it had to be only 1 pass. Still 4lbs is nowhere near the force that could be applied to the bracelet that tore.

    • @BronzeponyBeadedJewelry
      @BronzeponyBeadedJewelry  6 лет назад

      I agree! The 4lb is very thin. I like the 8lb for most of my beading projects.

Beading stores and online bead websites carry a beading type of Fireline. The fishing store or sporting goods store sells fishing Fireline. I hope this helps.
