Grand Canyon still runs #4960 to the canyon once a month between May and September and on special events. #29 is stored at the Grand Canyon Village Depot, #539 is now on the Williams Depot Platform, and Shay #5 is now displayed next to the hotel in Williams. Our Hocking Valley Scenic Railway in Nelsonville, Ohio used to own #29's sister #33.
I first saw 4960 in 1960, She was wearing the CB&Q logo in those days and was one of 2 steam locomotives CB&Q maintained for excursions (Northern 5632 being the other). I took an excursion from Aurora, IL to Ottawa, IL on her. When I read that GCRR rescued her, I was happy. Now it appears she may need rescuing again.
Man I hear you. It was sad to see 4960 rusting away. Corporate attitudes screw up many things and ideas in this country. As a U.S. Army veteran I say that. It's a dis-service for all.
I rode behind her on GCR but also with my parents on a few steam trips when she was still CB&Q. It was like seeing an old friend when I met her again.
The 4960 is on display outside the Williams depot and the 29 and 583 are stored outside the shops with a shay and an RS3.
I miss her old 5 chime whistle.

Is it me or does 4960's 3 chime whistle sound like Frisco 1522
29 was rerestored in August 2016
Great shot, what a long train.
that whistle sounds like a combo of 734 2716 and 611 together.
Or Frisco 1522
I love this whistle on #4960 better than any of them, even the one from the 2002 N.R.H.S. Video.
Travis Gordon I love that whistle too it reminds me of Frisco 1522 and ironically from a distance 4960 kind of looks like the frisco 1522
The whistle she had in 2002 was a Nathan 6 chime whistle
Thank you bnsf261 atleast i wasnt the only one
Does anyone know what kind of 3 chime whistle that is?
IN the description, it says second train. Is that the second train of the week or the second train of the day?
Sounds like thw 1522 whistle.
