Thanks for this. I didn’t know how much it had changed. Reading the Ofcom doc suggests that non approved equipment can be used as well as removable antennas, so long as the erp doesn’t exceed 500mw - how joe bloggs is expected to measure it though anybody knows so I’m surprised if this is so!
We have used a couple of Binatones on Narrowboat Hols & canoeing on the canal. They have always surpassed our expectations.

Yes you're right mate I only found that info after filming. Those little PMR sets are surprisingly good. Went up werneth the other night and bagged 5 or 6 contacts on pmr ch1 which was nice.
I think the problem with digi is that DPMR has that many different standards from different manufacturers that brand any old codec as dPMR it's a bit of a minefield. I've got kirisun s780's Kydera DP550's and other stuff on dpmr and none of them are compatible with eachother.

I've got a UV-82, and it's rather amazing how much I hear, and the distance it pulls in, and that's with the standard aerial.

when i lived in rhyl on the north wales coast i had regular contacts with my mate in denbigh who walked up to the top of the fields behind his house and had a great view over the coast 10 miles away
My Midland g.10 and my Midland g.18 and my sl25 maxons all have removable Ariels also a pair from maplins screw off to reveal a mini s.m.a. which they also sell a magmount which they state on their website can be used for pmr 446 mitex which I purchased and used I was informed that as long as you're half watt is used you can now use any ext ariels.....

I have a Baofeng 888S like the one in your video programmed with the 16 pmr446 channels and set to low power (1W) I'd love to know what power it is actually outputting as I suspect it's probably a lot nearer the legal 500mw legal output than the illegal 1w. Interesting thing about the removable antenna now being legal. IF OFCOM allowed a power increase to 1w then all those lovely little baofengs would then be perfectly legal to use provided they were set to the low power setting...…..come on OFCOM...….give us a break...….it's only half a watt difference and you've already moved on the antenna situation so give us that extra half a watt!
I have four of these radios that I use, didn't realise they were illegal. I have ordered cable to reprogramming 446 frequencies but I'm after a saved file that can be loaded into software so i don't have to put in manually all the channels. Do you have one or know where I can download? Cheers
I think what sets PMR446 apart from other licenseless frequencies like 27 MHz CB is the use of CTSS. This means that dozens of people can use the same frequency/channel without hearing the ones they don't want to hear. Also, the high frequency of PMR prevents you from hearing stations halfway across the continent.
What I'd like to know is whether 27 MHz CB with 9 inch antennas and 4 watt gets you more distance than PMR

I bought a pair of Floureon radios that have the 16 channels. Very cheap radios with built in micro USB charger.

Very informative video. I've just picked up a Baofeng GT5-TP and wondered if the Baofeng models such as this and the UV-5R can pick up the dPMR frequencies? I don't quite understand the difference between the digital and analogue frequencies yet.
Hi mate well analogue is just a normal signal. Digital is encoded and transmits in a different way. The Baofeng GT-5/UV-5R radios are analogue so won't pick up dPMR.
Think of it as VHS and DVD. You can watch the same film on both formats but they're not compatible with eachother ie a DVD player won't play VHS and vice versa. Hope that made sense?

I find it to be a bit of a shame that even radio has gone digital these days. I think digital has disconnected us as much as it has connected us.
People round my way use converted taxi radios , pushing between 25and 50 watts through home made antennas high up in the garden ,, get out for miles cheers Shane warks

The analogue channels 9-16 already become unofficial UHF CB and the default channels in the BF-888 are well used by both business and families. 462.125 getting like PMR446 now.

Thanks Lewis, I was sent over by Andy, I am so glad he did, so much info, much appreciated . before watching your video I thought you can transmit on PMR using the Baofeng radio as long as you had a Ham licence. I was about to buy the Baofeng T1 and reprogram it to use the lower power and it has a none removable antenna , I guess that will be ok? since the low power is 0.4w. been searching for a suitable radio like crazy for 3 days and can't decide on the best one to be used for between me and my son who is 9. I really liked the Baofeng GT3TP but I guess thats out question now :(. I guess we are left with a pair of Baofeng t3.
Hey mate thanks for commenting! To be honest, you can't guarantee the T1's lower power setting because you can't measure it, so we just take their word. To be fair mate, and this is probably the wrong attitude on my part, nobody would ever know, tonnes of people use baofengs and other higher powered equipment on PMR446. The T1 would be a good option, GT3TP even better ;) up to you haha.

Mate, anyone who tells you they stick to the 0.5w is a liar lol. I know guys who run 50-100w on PMR 446 and have done for years with no trouble.

I've got a uv82 and I've set up the pmr channels,I carnt hear anyone. Am I missing something or nobody in my area is using the frequency
The extra 8 analogue channels are due to become legal in 2018 in the UK but as yet are not legal for use. Not that most people will care about that!!!!! 😁

Ive been picking them up on all 16 since early 2016 Delboy ( and the strange factory programed BF888s frequencies are quite busy at times) even picking up naughty little pirates on 220mhz quite often prob due to the cheap quad banders from China with that allocation included, back in Hexham now away from the windy Whitley Bay coast so poachers and off roaders are the main offenders around here.
Was thinking PMR ch16 new weekender monitor net Friday to Monday for emergency hook ups for outdoor types hiker,walkers,4x4 etc.Im looking into right now FRN gateways hub networks on CH16 EU\UK CB for network radio as a place to go in if areas were cellphones just dont reach and least someone monitoring on net channel.Even around my QTH near to city we still have dead spots and radio works in country of hilly terrain.Hooking PMR ch16 as well maybe a good or bad idea? just be a place to go if you need to make a call out for help ,info,assistance in a nip.Rather have a radio out on mountains that a dodgy signal cellphone in some parts of hilly wales are! Just an idea,still building the FRN radio interface PCBs for testing.Glad finally done a good video on this as not a lot of info on it in UK PMR446,im glad they have expanded,but what it lacks and would have been nice is in the new channels a bit more power legally 1-2 watts,but cant grumble too much something for nothing!lol

So my understanding is even though it's not legal, nobody would really search for me to check whether my antenna is detachable or not? And as for power, 1 watt isn't so different from 0.5? So, if my understanding is correct, as long as I'm not interfering with anyone severely, I should be generally fine with my UV 5R transmitting on low wattage setting on PMR446?

Hey Lewis I've just got Motorola xt660 it does all 16 analog and digital pmr up to channel 32 few places use digital around near me so thought I'd get one dunno what other radio is compatible to listen to dpmr any ideas tried to use it with a tyt uv380 led goes green but no audio
What is the best and most versatile PMR radio in your opinion? I’ve noticed that Motorola XT420 and XT660d appear to have less interference
P.s I've got the Kenwood tk3410d digital analogue 16ch pmr446 and 16ch digital also hytera analogue digital 16ch on each does that mean these already incorporate these new channels?.....

Im guessing DPMR is not Mototrbo or conventional stand “DMR”. Also when did they open up more frequencies? Are you also aware of LPD frequencies?
Hi mate no dPMR is a different standard to DMR. Also the DMR on PMR is only Tier 1 which is different to Tier 2. I'm aware of LPD frequencies but never heard anything on them. Have you?
You're right, DPMR is not Motorrbo (which is DMR Tier II + some proprietary additions) They are two completely different standards.
At 0.5 watts TX legally on PMR 446 it's little more than a joke like cb in urban environment, up on higher ground improves, nothing to write home about really.
Got it's uses, and limitations, that's about all.
Please point me in the direction of the 'business' frequency. I have a long but basic knowledge of cb's as I used to be on the cb alot during the late 90's and early 2000's. I now use a set of 4 Motorola MT6000e's at work (belonging to me) which I believe transmit 4w, and are decommissioned police radios. These apparently use the business frequency. Not too clued up here. They seem to work point to point very well, although only to about half a mile. A good explanation of the current business frequency, and the point i am obviously missing, would be very interesting.

Thanks for the video. If the new analogue frequencies are to be used from 2018, people have to buy new PMR radio if they want to use these new frequencies.

Off topic slightly but a big row in America over Baofeng radios at the minute as the FCC have declared them illegal for use in the USA...…..well good luck with trying to enforce that one FCC!
Big Will All while cb channel 6 is broadcasting retards non-stop all over the country with 2000 watt amps and fcc does nothing. Ridiculous. I’d say better stock up on ccr’s while they are plentiful and cheap. At the very least I can see a big price increase just due to the hassle.

Hi Josh, well after recording this Ofcom updated the rules and you can use a detatchable antenna as long as the ERP isn't more than 500mw.
Can you please tell what can happen if I use my Baofeng BF888S on PMR446, I just want to use in when we travel with my friends with cars cross EUROPE or in some mall,hiking etc. You' re telling me that are useless for free use ? I read many comment on internet that people r using them without any problems.
Nothing will happen unless you get caught. Then you'll be fined and your equipment will be confiscated. Baofengs have too much transmitting power and generally they are illegal to use in EU and EFTA countries on PMR446 band.
They need to change it to 1watts of e.r.p

Catdude: I assume you mean PMR? In the UK the legal limit is 1/2 Watt and no removable antenna.....the rules may be different elsewhere.

In North America the 70 cm band is 440-450 Mhz. Can licensed amateur operators in the USA and Canada use PMR radios legally? Stores in the US and Canada sell the14 channel FRS radios 462/467 Mhz
No one transmit PMR446 frequencies here in Toronto, Canada
If you are a license ham in the USA and us territorys ( under the fcc jurisdiction )....you can use PMR 446 whit your ham license legally. It is part of the 440 to 450 ham band.... ( If you are not a ham don't use PMR 466 in the USA is iligal and ham's monitor and use that UHF band )
Taiwan have FRS 467 MHz. Same channel 11 as US FRS channel 11 frequency.

No you can select a frequency in the VFO
you mentioned DMR in your Video there would seem to be some confusion about this! dPMR can use both 6.25khz and12.5khz channel bandwidths, Peopple who don't know this assume that 12.5khz digital PMR must be DMR thust many of us radio enthusiasts being led to bealive wrongly that DMR is used along side dpmr on 446.0-2, I recently emailed the dpmr association to clarify this they said as far as they know no one makes licences free DMR radios they are only available in dPMR446, so the only way DMR would be used is on illegal Radios!

You did not mention that PMR446 radios are not legal everywhere. They are only legal in Europe and a few other countries. They cannot be used in the U.S., where these frequencies are assigned to other services. In turn, FRS/GMRS radios are legal in the U.S., but illegal in Europe, where the frequencies are assigned to the emergency and military services. For a list of countries where PMR446 radios can be used see page 2 of:

FRS/GMRS radios can be used in the U.S. and Canada only. In Canada GMRS may only operate with up to 2 watts power, with no authorization for higher power, repeater installation and base stations. The frequencies used in these radios are used by the emergency services and the military in Europe.

PMR should be 5 Watts.
Then it would even more congested. The whole point of 0.5W is to allow more people to use it as range is limited. It's a well balanced rule as it gives people more range where it needs like outdoor activities and in cities it's short range and more people can use it.
But with 16 channels that would be a big difference

hey I have just bought a uv-5r radio and I live in the Shropshire area and I was wondering if you know of any repeators, so I could possibly speak to people, i'd like to use the radio as a hobby, as I have always wanted my own radio's and cb radios as I used to love it when my dad used them when I was a child we would go driving around at night and go up to the top of mountains where we could park and listen to the radio and talk to other people.
Why is it illegal to transmit on PMR channels in the UK? From everything I have read they are legal licence free channels. Im confused?

446 MHz, 462 / 467 MHz are also used for Fire and Emergency radios in the UK.
PMR has been going since the 1970s and is not the same thing as PMR446

It used for licensed Amateur radio operators in the US, Canada and Australia. Australia uses UHF CB 476 / 477 MHz, US have FRS 467 MHz (GMRS 462 MHz license required), and FRS/GMRS no licence use in Canada.
Australian 476/477 MHz are also used for police radios in the US.
US/Canadian 462 / 467 MHz are allocated for use in Europe for UK Fire brigades, police in Russia, emergency radios in Europe and commercial radios in Australia.
