Roque Santa Cruz | All 29 goals for Blackburn Rovers

Rovers signed Paraguayan striker, Roque Santa Cruz, from Bayern Munich for £3.5m in the summer of 2007. It was a signing that came as a surprise to Rovers fans, not only due to his price tag, but also due to his previous injury record.
The fans need not have worried though, as Roque made a flying start to his Rovers career by scoring on his debut, coming on as a substitute at the Riverside Stadium. Benni McCarthy had turned out to be an impressive capture by Rovers the previous summer, and Roque was about to join him in that regard as the Paraguayan enjoyed a blistering first campaign in English football.
Santa Cruz would go on to score 19 Premier League goals in the 2007/08 season, finishing fourth top scorer in the League, only behind Cristiano Ronaldo, Fernando Torres and Emmanuel Adebayor respectively. Roque scored 23 goals in all competitions in his first season, including goals against Man United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Man City as Rovers finished 7th in the Premier League, narrowly missing out on a UEFA Cup spot.
Roque's second season at Rovers was not quite as productive as his first, as the Paraguayan netted six goals in all competitions, with four of them coming in the Premier League.
At the end of the 2008/09 season, rumours began circulating about Manchester City and former Rovers manager, Mark Hughes, wanting to take Santa Cruz to City. It was Mark Hughes, who had initially signed Roque for Rovers and the Welshman, and when the Welshman became the Man City manager in 2008, it was Roque who he wanted as his striker. Rumours then became reality in June 2009 when Manchester City signed Santa Cruz from Rovers for £17.5m.
This was not the end of Roque's story with Rovers, however, as he returned for a second spell at the club in January 2011. This time, his stay was for 6 months only as part of a loan deal. Roque made 10 appearances during that loan, but did not re-discover his old goal scoring touch, as he failed to register a goal during those 10 games.
Nevertheless, Roque takes his place as another excellent striker to have played for Rovers and is another example of the superb recruitment that would take place at the club under Mark Hughes, John Williams and Co.
